Yes, I’m always a fan of clean, healthy, environmentally conscious fishmongers. With generations of local knowledge, this company has established itself as the go-to place for fresh lobster, crawfish, brown crab, velvet crab, spider crab, sea urchins, prawns and shrimp. Their fishermen use V-notching to conserve lobster stocks. This is where a V-Notch is cut in the tail of female lobsters and they are returned alive to the sea so that they can continue to breed. Not like the«slash and burn», take everything, technique used so often in mostly Pacific fisheries. They also provide cool recipes including one interesting dish of lobster, cream & whiskey called«Dublin Lawyer»( ) which sounds mighty tasty. They think the name came from the fat, wealthy alcoholic lawyers in the capitol city. It’s hard to imagine when looking out over this pristine coast how violence has marred its charm so many times. A Spanish cannon reminds us of the barbaric treatment of Spanish sailors that survived their ship’s wrecking only to be hung by locals without trial( ). Or the small float in the middle of the bay to remind us of where Lord Mountbatten and his family were blown to pieces in an IRA attack.( ) Now though, the waters are quiet and the winds favorable. I hope, as many others do, that this place will never again serve as a reminder of man’s primitive nature, and that the fishing will long provide sustenance for new generations of Irish. May they never experience the sectarian violence that mars this beautiful landscape.
