Specialties

At Carbery Sailing, we offer RYA sailing courses and chartered sailing trips on Ireland’s beautiful Atlantic coast

Our sailing school is based in Ahakista on West Cork’s Sheep’s Head peninsula — a European Destination of Excellence — and all practical training takes place on our Hallberg Rassy 46′ yacht ‘Merlin’.

Whether you’re a novice sailor or more experienced, you’ll learn great sailing skills on our three stunning local bays. Bantry Bay, Dunmanus Bay and Roaring Water Bay offer technical challenges to suit everyone. You’ll gain practical experience and confidence as well as your RYA sailing qualifications while you’re here with us.

Our professional and friendly instructors cater for novice sailors and for people looking to advance their sailing skills.

Train for your Start Yachting, Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper sailing qualifications here, or sign up for a ‘taster’ sailing weekends, milebuilding courses or chartered day trips. West Cork is the perfect place to learn to sail, and our visitors from the UK, Europe and America, love the fine scenery, fantastic food and great company they find here after a day out on the water.

Our Wild Atlantic Way Cruises are an amazing way to experience Ireland’s southwest coastline, for novices and experienced sailors alike.

History

Established in 2012.

Carbery Sailing is a RYA recognised training centre based in Ahakista offering RYA sailing courses and skippered charter.

The company was started in 2012 by Chris Forker. Chris is a Naval Architect and used to be an instructor with Glenans Sailing School in Baltimore in the late 70s. Drawing on a passion for sailing he has started the company with a Hallberg-Rassy 46 «Merlin» as a solid foundation on which to teach students the art and science of sailing.

Chris is meticulous about maintaining the highest possible standards both in the maintenance and preparation of Merlin.

Merlin is Irish Department of Transport for the Marine coded and carries all the necessary safety equipment. The school’s procedures are frequently updated, overhauled and inspected
