The Flowing Tide

Grand spot for an aul jar. A proper boozer with enough seating and a friendly barman. No complaints from me!

The Flowing Tide ist das Stammlokal der Schauspieler aus dem direkt gegenüberliegendenden
Abbey Theatre. Von der Ausstattung und dem Ambiente her gleicht es vielen anderen Pubs
in der irischen Hauptstadt. Der eigentliche Charme wird hier aber von den vielen
Theaterplakaten ausgestrahlt, mit denen hier die Wände gepflastert sind.
Wenn ich nicht falsch liege, sind auch Plakate von berühmten Erstaufführungen darunter.
Im vorderen Bereich des Pubs hängen auch Brandbekämpfungsmittel an der Wand.
Brandschutzdecken und Feuerlöscher. Wohl zur Erinnerung an alte Zeiten, als in den
irischen Pubs noch geraucht werden durfte. Aber diese Zeiten sind auch her (leider) schon
seit langem vorbei, so daß beim Anblick dieser Gerätschaften nur sentimentale Erinnerungen
wach werden.
Das Publikum im Flowing Tide ist gemischt. Allerdings scheinen die Touristen hier in der
Minderheit zu sein. Anscheinend zieht es die mehr in Pubs wie Temple Bar.
Aber auch im Flowing Tide kommt man sehr schnell mit den einheimischen Gästen ins
Gespräch, mit etwas Glück, und zur passenden Uhrzeit sogar mit einem der Schauspieler
aus dem Abbey Theatre.
Die Preise entsprechen dem üblichen Rahmen, und die Freundlichkeit der Mitarbeiter ist die Gleiche, wie in den anderen Pubs Dublins.

Popular with luvvies acting in the Abbey across the road and theatre-​goers looking for a pre or post show drink, the Flowing Tide was the main source of refuge following the riots that accompanied the showing of Synge’s «Playboy of the Western World» in 1907. However, if you are unconnected with the theatre in any way you won’t feel out of place — locals and random blow-​ins also form a large part of the clientele and the Tide does a mean toastie.
Downstairs attracts a rocker crowd, with a rare pool table and a much fought-​over juke box.

This is a real Dublin pub, due to it’s proximity to the Abbey, you get a healthy mix of the theatre crowd and regulars. On the walls are images of famous plays. Crowd is more mature and there is a small seating area outside, it’s wedged in between a high wall and the back of the old buildings on the street, it’s reminds me of a Dickens novel. They also have random Dublin road signs stuck on the wall.
Last time I was there, Mick Lally (Miley) popped out for a smoke. Some drunken fool would not give the man peace,
‘Miley!
It’s Mick.
Miley, well holy God! I think you are great.‘
No response.
‘I hope I am not disturbing you?‘
She edges in more to sit and stare at him. I never saw a man smoke so quick, I thought he was going to put it out in her face.
So if you go there you too can have moments like this!

Three reasons why you might end up in the Flowing Tide:
1. you’re waiting on the 33 bus, which stops outside and only comes at the full moon.
2. you’ve just been to a show at the abbey theatre across the road
3. it’s a lovely pub.
Popular with the artsy types from the illustrious national theatre, but also a pub for local people of every age, class and persuasion… and blow-​ins are made welcome too. They serve pizza, the guinness is good (i’ve heard men in woolly jumpers say as much to each other at the bar): a cosy, unpretensious watering hole for one and all, roll up, roll up!
