Specialties

The Dropping Well is a landmark pub located in Milltown, south Dublin, just down the road from The Nine Arches with panoramic views of the beautiful Dodder River.

A fine traditional bar which has been extensively renovated over the years to provide our patrons with a superior atmosphere and exceptional facilities. The Dropping Well can cater for all of our patrons needs whether that be a family function in our 2 well appointed function rooms, a sumptuous meal in our Classon’s Restaurant, an outdoor BBQ or simply a quiet pint in one of our bars or out on the sun terrace.

We show all the major sports events on our state of the art TVs, host many live bands and DJs and have a wealth of golf outings, wine tastings and other promotional nights for our customers enjoyment. Our Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Function Menus are constantly being updated to provide a superior seasonal dining experience and we also have a very large and varied wine list and rare liquor stock.

History

Established in 1847.

Long before The Dropping Well was established, Milltown was home to a thriving silk industry, two corn mills, an iron mill, a paper mill and a sawmill which was located at Classon’s Bridge on the site of the Dropping Well pub. In the late 18th Century John Classon started his own milling business at this site beside the river Dodder, he later built a bridge across the river from granite stone lifted from the Dodder bed to aid transport to and from his business, Classon’s Bridge still bears his name to this day.

Since first licensed in 1847 the Dropping Well has enjoyed eight ownerships:

Mr & Mrs John Howe, Miss Williams, Joseph Brownrigg, John Maher, Edward Daly, P.H. Meagher, The Cleary Family and the current owner Charlie Chawke, we know some of this great establishment’s history…
