The Jervis Tesco! Due to its handy location right in the city centre next to a LUAS stop I find myself shopping here often. They don’t have the massive selection you find in Maynooth or at the other super Tescos but they do have a good selection which does include an area of homewares that does have much of what you need. One thing to note, if venturing here on the weekend it does tend to get extremely busy, as it does during lunchtime hours as well and equally so around 5 – 6PM.

Although it is messy and sometimes they are out of stock, they have most of what you need and the staff were helpful.

Tesco. You are an odd bird. You sell fresh buffalo mozzarella for only € 1, but you dont stock cocoa powder? You sell 75 different types of cream(sour cream, single cream, double cream, whipping cream, heavy cream, clotted cream, buttermilk cream, crème fraîche, etc.) but you dont have something as simple as a butter muffin? Please explain. Still, you have most of the ingredients I need to cook.

This, I think, is the worst Tesco I’ve ever shopped at. Unfortunately, it is also the most convenient Tesco — so I do come back from time to time. Each time, however, I am promptly reminded why I avoid the place to begin with. While it is a big store, that is useless since they are always out of stock. It’s as if there is a war on. Sometimes there is no chicken. Other times, no mince. Heaven forbid you shop on a Sunday and try to get bread that is within date. Seriously, you’d think there was a national level of rationing… The staff is generally rude and/or unhelpful. I find the store to be rather unclean in appearance and the employees untidy and poorly kept. Then, there’s the misleading advertising. Going down the flat ramp, for instance, there is(or was) a sign for Moy Park Chicken Fillets 4 euros. Yet that item would never be in stock. This isn’t an outdated advertisement either, as it would move locations — but they simply refuse to restock that brand of fillets. For months, they had a sign up indicating that they close at 10 during the week, but this hasn’t been true for awhile, as they close at 7. Speaking of closing time, this Tesco will start warning you it is closing time at 10 to the hour. They do so through a barely audible announcement over the loudspeaker and sometimes they dim the lights. Besides being a real poor and tacky practice, they will start closing registers at this time. So now, you are stuck in longer queues while they berate you over the announcement system for remaining in the store. Finally, the best advice I can give you if you choose to shop here is to mind your receipt at the end of your purchases. I’ve had numerous situations where I overpaid, this happens about 1 out of every three times I shop there. They simply do not update their prices. Tesco does have the friendly policy that if the price is wrong, you get the item for free — but there are conditions. 1) you have to have actually paid, so if you were good and spotted it while checking out, that wouldn’t count. 2) it only applies to smaller priced items, so your DVD Player or Camera will not count, and 3) you have to go to the customer service desk to make the claim.

This Tesco is by far the best. Located in the basement of the shopping centre, I’m always amazed at how big the shop actually is. It’s one huge concrete square that stocks everything imaginable. One of the reasons I continually do my shopping here is that it really has everything. Tesco has an amazing bakery that rivals the one in M & S. The smell of the buns and loaves that are being made every day perfume the whole store. Such a sweet delicious smell. Mmmm. And you can get a small bun for 19 cents. Ridiculously cheap! Besides the bread, the alcohol aisle is quite impressive as well. Many people forget that the booze is so cheap here. I’ve bought decent bottles of wine for 4 Euro. It’s great to be able to buy kitchen supplies and home ware while doing you food shopping. The whole front wall section is dedicated to appliances and gadgets. I bought sheets, bins, pots, socks and DVDs here in the past. Being able to buy all different kinds of things in one place is a real time saver.

I didn’t really like this tesco… I’m not sure why. I think it’s simply because in the midst of lots of shops like topshop and lifestyle sports, there’s a giant grocery store lurking below. I know that might sound strange, but it’s how I feel! Maybe it’s because I associate clothes shopping as fun and exciting, and I associate buying rice krispies and butter as a mundane experience. I don’t know! Also, I find it weird that you get an escalator down, and one back up with your trolley. Now granted its one of them smooth escalators, a travalator I believe they’re called(basically like a long metal treadmill), but I still find it a strange concept. The supermarket itself is grand… just the other stuff puts me off!

Tesco is quite an empire at this stage with its ambitious little fingers reaching into every pie including groceries, clothing, credit cards, phones and insurance. However far they stretch, I still think the majority of us most readily associate Tesco with food shopping. There seems to be a Tesco around almost every corner in Ireland and this includes Dublin’s Jervis Street. As Heather says, the prices are reasonable. The selection is also decent but you won’t find anything too outlandish. It would be nice to see bigger fair trade, natural and organic selections in a supermarket that has so much pull. The ‘finest’ selection is that bit more gourmet and verges on M&S-style luxury food. Tesco stocks a good selection of ready-made food for the weary and the busy. Tesco claims to support Irish producers and I wouldn’t dare to suggest any different but I know some mightily disgruntled Irish farmers who would.

With everything else in Dublin so expensive, I was surprised to find the prices at TESCO so reasonable. Grab some basics here to help off set the high costs of eating out in Dublin if you are on a budget. Though keep in mind, bring our own bag, because like other places in Dublin, TESCO charges you per bag if you don’t have one.
