Love this pub! Great for watching matches, getting an after work pint, or if your looking for a good night at the weekend! The crowd here tends to be from about 22 — 35 so I guess a it could be considered a younger pub but in general the atmosphere is always great and I think people of all ages would enjoy it!

Your typical Irish pub really — good selection of craft beers and everything else you could need. Very cosy — lots of snug type areas with dark wood and lighting and comfy seats. If you’re into sports, there are screens everywhere. They’re actually a good size — like Goldilocks, big enough for the sports people to watch, but not so big that they’re intrusive and annoying for the non-sports folk. I threw my head out the back really quickly as well and there’s a lovely cute little beer garden /smoking area out there, very nice altogether.

We popped into Smyth’s for a quick pint and to watch the 2nd half of the Utd match last night — from what looked pretty divey from outside turned into something that really was quite cosy if nothing spectacular. Loads of tv screens were dotted around this bar and I’d highly recommend it if the big match is on — you may need to do a slight bit of elbowing of others out of the way due to the layout of the venue but all in all there’s some corners where you could pull up a stool and not be bothered. There was a decent range of beers — some craft, some standard and all the usual full bar shelf drinks on offer. Definitely worth checking out if you’re an armchair sportsman!

In search for a local when I moved to Ranelagh, I stumbled upon Smyths after trying one or two other bars in the village. Hands down my favourite. The best pint of Guinness in the village, I’m not a fan of the Guinness in Dublin, but this place I like. The atmosphere is great, it’s the best place in this«Slightly anti GAA village» to watch the matches in. They do a food menu consisting of mammy homecooking food. Great for cold days. They have floor staff if you don’t fancy loosing your seat to run to the bar. I love the garden here, it feels like it’s a little secret tucked behind the back of the rows of houses. Only complaint, as most Dublin bars do… showing sports matches with the sound off. They did turn it up when I asked.

Caters for all types, and the music is not too loud so you can actually chat without shouting! Unexpected discovery! Old style pub with new world charm. This place was very lively for a Wednesday night — the world cup played a major part in this really, but we, like a bunch of other people, were not interested in it and not put off by it. The ambiance in the pub was bustly, but still comfortable. We headed straight for the smoking area as it was a nice evening. There was a TV out there showing a match, but it was muted which was great for us anyway! The clientele is young and the vibe is fun — I was really pleasantly surprised as you really wouldn’t know from the outside. If I’m eating in Ranelagh I will be back in again for after dinner drinks. Recommended. Great for drinks before you go in to town heads, college group heads, and need to go to a sports bar with your moth heads!

I went to Smyth’s twice within the same week, with two different sets of people, ‘by accident’. Sunday morning, we stopped here to take a break from our bicycles and the rain. Everywhere else was full in Ranelagh and this was our last choice, if I’m honest but what a nice surprise. The fire was roaring and there were only a handful of other customers in this very traditional pub space. Food was available. Some of us went for breakfasty options and were very satisfied with what we got. Coffee was also quite nice and we didn’t expect it to be. I returned there on a Saturday evening — rugby night! What a difference. The place was buzzing with hordes of young, trendy, good looking people watching the game and guzzling pints. Fantastic if a little crowded but not too crowded. We were on our way to a restaurant so didn’t spend that long in Smyth’s but had a good time and were able to hear each other over the rugby which is great! There you go. Two reviews in one. Smyth’s didn’t disappoint in either scenario.

This is my favorite pub in Dublin. It’s definitely not for the nights that you want to go out with just the girlfriends, dressed to the nines, and dancing, but if you like a lively place on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, or really any night of the week, that has a bit of a low key crowd, Smyths is perfect. I’ve started many a night there with a few friends for«just one or two» pints, and 7 pints of Guinness later, we are having a fantastic time. It’s a great mix for just relaxing with friends, catching up and having pints, but with a good crowd surrounding you and not having to yell over loud music. It closes fairly early, around half 12 during the week, and close to 2 on the weekends, but Mcsorleys is right down the road as a late night semi-dance-y place to cap off the night if you aren’t ready to go home at 2.

This is a large bar just a short walk away from Ranelagh luas stop. It is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, and seems to be quite popular for parties and so on. The main room has several booth areas along the sides, so it is easy enough for a larger crowd of people to make themselves semi-private space. Have been there for a few birthday parties now, and have noticed that the bar does finger-food if you arrange it in advance, probably better quality than some other places.(As in, it’s still only fried stuff, but it’s nicer fried stuff than you might get elsewhere). The best thing in my opinion was the beer garden– it’s massive, and for the most part covered, heated, doesn’t smell, and isn’t dirty. And this, my friends, is where the hot men hang out. A shame I no longer live in Ranelagh. Downsides? The place gets too busy, and if you haven’t a booth(and are a small person) you will definitely get trampled on. Ladies loos are revolting. But apart from those, many a good night had here.

Smyths is an enjoyable, friendly pub. Stopped by for lunch when my usual McSorley’s Pub down the street was not open yet. Fish & Chips, house salad, and two pints of Red Irish Ale was € 22(pic uploaded). Short walk from the Ranelagh stop on the Luas tram line. Tip: Parts of this bar are very dark. So if you want to read the newspaper, as I did, sit near the skylight.

This is a «Marina Bar.» For those of you from London, that means it belongs in W8, or if from New York it is a locals place from the Upper East Side. Our dinner was tasty and quite a good value. Still, we had to leave when the band started playing the saddest song known to man.(i.e. Loosing My Religion by REM)

Smyth’s is somewhat typical, but very enjoyable — a good pub for meeting up with friends. There are plenty of nooks and crannys, there is a nice mix of people, the beer is good, and the music is so-so. If you have enough pints, you will probably crave the pringles.

After a seriously delicious tapas meal at Ochos down the street, I was in need of a last pint(or three) of Guinness to say goodbye to Dublin. Lucky for us, Smyth’s delivered. Smyth’s is quite a large pub but still manages to feel quite intimate, with a bevy of booths and tables scattered throughout to carry on whatever conversation you feel like having. We bellied up to the bar and ordered our drinks from the elder bartender: one that I liked to imagine had been working there for decades. The Guinness was well poured and quite tasty: one of the better ones I had during my trip(although comparing pints of Guinness in Dublin is like comparing haute couture in Paris: it’s all heavenly). If I lived nearby(oh, to dream!) I wouldn’t have any problem being a regular at Smyth’s. Between the cozy indoors and lovely patio out back, it’s pretty much all you need.

Mmmmm… nothing really beats a glass of hot port on a cold December evening and at Smyth’s they know the recipe(OK it’s fairly simple, but they do manage to make sure the cloves stick to the lemon slice instead of floating around in your glass, a crucial part many pubs seem to forget about). Enjoy your drink next to the fire-place and you’ll get all warm and cosy inside.

Smyth’s is another one of the nice pubs along Ranelagh Road. There is less posing here than in McSorley’s and the atmosphere is friendly. There was a few characters around as well. They have various screens dotted around the walls so you can watch the matches. The music isn’t that great though, too poptastic for my taste. I don’t smoke but my friends tell me that the smoking area is quite big out back. The staff are very friendly and efficient– we had a pint in front of us within 2 minutes of walking in. I like Smyth’s because there is nothing special about it, it’s a great place to start off a night out.

I don’t know what it is about this place but everyone else seems to love it but it grinds on me, like squeaking polystyrene. Maybe it’s because of the hype. Or maybe it’s because everyone I frequent the place with smokes and I end up going home stinking of cigarettes and with a sore chest. It’s popular with locals and ex-pats, business men and students but it has no flavour. The people in here are lively enough characters, but I can’t find any soul to the place. Every time I go(under duress might I add), I regret it afterwards. The toilets are too few and too dirty and the music is poor. The drinks are standard and the food is overpriced deep-fried frozen fayre. If you smoke, the area out back has decent heaters(the click on/off function gets annoying after a while) and it’s been extended so it’s now a lot less smokey. The staff are friendly and efficient but it doesn’t make up for the lack of everything else. There are places with much more allure. I wouldn’t waste time going here.
