It really makes financial sense to have a very good looking friend. If you don’t have one, then now is the time to invest in one. Oh hush up those at the back that think I’m being shallow — I’m being practical. In these recessionary times a good looking friend is your ticket to free stuff. This pub is a bit hidden away but they still have a print out on the bar top about Unilocal — my work has been done there. It’s like someones living room. Very homely, a lot of locals of all different age groups. TVs for the sports and chart music on the speakers. Great drinks prices. Very friendly staff especially very friendly with my very good looking friend, we got a free round. I was dressed in my Rocky style tracksuit as I had assumed we were going for a walk, I didn’t realise that meant to the pub. So you can understand the big sense of achievement I felt when I got a free drink whilst dressed like I was about to run up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

i was looking back over my pub reviews and i was shocked to see that i’d only given Scruffy’s 4 stars the first time around. it has grown to become my go-to place on any given night and i go to great lengths to drag my friends here from all over dublin. and that’s not just because it’s easy for me to stumble home from here :)

Almost walked by this place without seeing it! I sure am glad I saw the flags out of the corner of my eye. Tucked behind some building down an alley lies a pub with a great atmosphere, tasty Guinness and wonderful people. A great mix of music on the sound system. I had my first pint of Ireland here and hope to come back again.

It’s getting late. Sure, I’ll just go for the one. Somewhere for a nice sit-down and not too lively. This looks like a good place. Stumble into the bar. Dammit, you need to pull the door, not push it. Stubbed my toe on the step. This isn’t going well. Get the barman’s attention. Try not to look too drunk. «The usual, is it?» Huh? I guess I’ve been here before. And I’ve got a «usual.» I wonder what it is. At least the barman remembers. «Yes please» It was a beer. Yum. Maybe I’ll just have one more.

Scruffy Murphys, one of the original, if not *the* original stealth pub in Dublin. I’ve lived in Dublin all my life and I only discovered Scruffys in 2004. Few people realise they’re passing a pub as they wander past office block after office block on Mount St. Unless you know when you look, you’d probably miss the small archway leading to an alley behind said office blocks and the quaint«old man» pub that is Scruffy Murphys. Once you know where Scruffys is, it’s easy to find. Inside you find the usual old man pub, a mixture of wooded hipod and standard tables and even a few couches in one corner. The bar selection is that of a typical bar, so don’t expect anything like unusual beers or extravagant cocktails beyond a shot and a short. They have a food menu of the typical things you’d expect as pub grub — fish and chips, a burger, a lasagna, etc. Make sure you ask if the kitchen is open however, it isn’t always and visible menus doesn’t guarantee an open kitchen. If it’s not open, Baggot St is only a short walk away and I know people who have ordered pizzas to be delivered outside and managed to eat the down the back without any hassle from the barman. Scruffys can be busy on a Friday night with the after work office crowds, so I’d suggest enjoying it on a school night to truly experience it’s laid back attitude. Mondays and Tuesdays in particular are great for quiet pints or if you want to actually heat people you’re chatting with.

Scruffy Murphys is a perfect place to have a drink of a Monday. I’m sure all weekdays are good days to drink at Scruffy’s, but Monday is particularly nice if you are the TGIM sort. I have spent many, many(too many) Mondays here and am pleased to say that in addition to everything else, I have come close to setting myself on fire in this establishment. Nice local pub, particularly because there’s not a lot of riff-raff hanging around on weekdays(like Mondays). Pub food is pretty decent, too.

I don’t know what possessed me to actually walk into Scruffy Murphy’s because the place really doesn’t look like much from the outside. Doesn’t look much better when you walk in either but I decided to have a pint at least in the name of research. Turns out that this was one of my better decisions. While scruffy is programme with this pub, it has a cracking atmosphere and a varied clientele, making for a good afternoon or evening. Comfy chairs, lots of little corners and a great pint. I’ll be back.

Ah my local… makes me homesick just thinking about this place. Tucked away in an alley a block up from Grand Canal on Lower Mount, Scruffy Murphys boast comfy couches, barman who pull a great pint, and the matches are always on the telly there. They have limited food service which is alright… I go for the pints any way!
