History

A brief history on Pembroke Townhouse, 88 Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge:

— Pembroke Townhouse, also formerly known as «Number 88», is a Georgian Townhouse located on Pembroke Road in the Dublin 4s’ prestigious Ballsbridge. The building is made up of three adjoining Georgian Houses dating back to before the turn of the Century — Numbers 88, 89 and 90 Pembroke Road. In 1996, the mainly neglected building was upgraded by joining the three townhouses into one to convert 88 – 90 Pembroke Road into a four star guesthouse. The front wall, façade and main steps, were cleaned, restored and repointed and the building behind fully modernised into a 6 storey 50 bedroomed guesthouse (now 48 rooms, with the conversion of 2 bedrooms into other use), known as «Number 88». The gardens behind were joined and a 20 space car park created, acessed from the Baggot Lane. More recently, in 2005, the guesthouse name was changed to «Pembroke Townhouse».

Pembroke Townhouse was perfect for our visit to Dublin. Our room was clean and spacious by European standards. The continental breakfast was wonderful with fresh baked breads, fruits and fresh coffee. The staff are generous and very helpful.
The location also worked well for us — a 20 minute walk to most of the sites in town — St. Stephens Green, Trinity College, museums, etc. I enjoyed my morning walks around the neighborhood which include many embassies. The restaurant options were very good — some just 2 blocks away. A market is just down the street.
We will definitely stay here again next time we’re in Dublin.

Hotel room was pretty basic, TV was tiny, shower was weak, and bed and pillows were uncomfortable. Location was about a 15 minute walk from St Stephens Green (pretty central part of town), ok when it wasn’t raining. A few blocks from a strip of restaurants. Staff was nice. Breakfast was solid.

Lovely Georgian hotel, but we felt we were overcharged compared to other hotels in the area. The room was rather small, but nice enough. Breakfast was quite good; free tea service in the afternoon included wine and cheese — very nice. We found personnel in other Ireland hotels warmer and friendlier, but the hotel is entirely adequate, if you don’t mind spending that much. It was nice to find free (and secure) parking.

I cant see what the fuss is all about. The criticism seems to be of minor aspects of this place, not the hotel taken as a whole
We enjoyed our stay here, though we agree, the really nice car park (a great amenity in Dublin) is a bit difficult to find from the directions and even the map! If you want to find it, simply keep turning left, obviously, around the block if you are outside and there it is.
Staff very helpful and location good. Cant remember accurately the WiFi situation but in the 21^st Century if it didn’t have any free wifi, we wouldn’t have stayed here? I have been stung by this before and there is no reason to stay at a hotel with paid wifi.
The one point with which I do agree is that the rooms are tiny with no space on the floor itself for luggage (which makes packing and then dressing difficult) but this place is slightly less expensive than most in Dublin so I am not sure there is a complaint here?

Here is my response to Fiona from Pembroke… clueless, party of one please.
So your response to my very accurate review is to insult my intelligence by suggesting I got the wrong crappy townhouse??? Hahaha. If you’re in charge of customer service and Unilocal PR, then this below average establishment is really in trouble. Your job isn’t to question if I got the right address, how many Pembroke Townhouses are there in Ballsbridge? Your job is to question why you have zero 4 and 5 star reviews and why I had such a poor experience in the first place. And so what if the front desk girl’s nationality isn’t French? Maybe I got the accent wrong or maybe she quit, but the point is that regardless of where her accent was actually from, her rudeness and lack of social skills were unmistakable! I will never forget how she said, «this is not a hotel, it’s a guest house» in her rude tone as she refused to help with our bags or be accommodating in any way.
Also, the room was facing what looked like an alley between my crappy room and an apartment building. There were cars parked there and some trash cans, it was a horrible, ugly view, that’s the point, not whether or not this ghastly space can be categorized as a car park. Find the room in your «guesthouse» with the least space to move in, the most uncomfortable bed and the worst view and then you’ll get familiar with where I stayed. I think it’s asinine to add that you upgraded your Internet and its really fast now! Who cares? Does that magically transform my terrible overall experience at this 2 star townhouse? No! Thanks for doing the impossible, which is make me dislike the Pembroke Townhouse in Dublin, Ireland even more than right after I had the misfortune of staying there.

Review based on my stay from July 2009.
This «hotel» is located in a lovely area near many of the embassies. My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights of our honeymoon while we roamed around most of Ireland for a couple weeks. While it was the least favorite of our lodging selections, it was still a nice place. After being spoiled in many wonderful B&B’s and a couple upper end hotels in other cities, we expected more here. The internet was fee based which was disappointing considering how slow and unreliable it was but I see that since then they have upgraded to a higher speed connection.
They also didn’t have a simple ammenity like an ice machine either which we found odd for a place this size. They made up for that though with their super friendly and helpful service. The woman at the front desk even tried to help with the ice by getting a cup of it from the kitchen for us. Not ideal but at least they tried and that counts for a lot in my book.
The room was very small and quite out dated but the bed was comfortable and we slept well.
The private parking in the enclosed lot behind the townhouse was nice too! We actually didn’t have to move our car after we arrived until we left since we enjoyed walking from here to all over Dublin. It’s a very friendly and easy city to walk around.
So overall, my impression is that it’s a decent place with some good qualities but probably not the best value in town for what you pay for.

Wir verbrachten im Dezember 2009 zwei Nächte für 119 Euro pro Nacht ohne Frühstück im Pembroke Townhouse in Dublin. Die Buchung nahmen wir über HRS vor. Die Anreise vom Dubliner Flughafen gestaltete sich über die blaue Buslinie problemlos. Die Haltestelle befindet sich gleich um die Ecke.
Unser einfach ausgestattetes Zimmer (304) verfügte über ein King-Size Doppelbett und — über eine kleine Treppe zugänglich — einer weiteren Einzelliege. Der Schlafkomfort im Doppelbett war ausgezeichnet, der der Liege nur mit Hilfe mehrere Pint Guiness als angemessen zu bezeichnen. Das großflächige Fenster verfügte über einen Hauch von Wärmeschutzverglasung und ließ sich nur zu zweit unter größter Kraftanstrengung öffnen.
Das sehr elementare Badezimmer wartete mit einer Badewanne, WC und Waschgelegenheit auf. Wie überall in UK fließt das Wasser über zwei getrennte Zapfstellen in das Waschbecken. Mitteleuropäische Waschgewohnheiten unter fließendem Wasser werden nicht unterstützt, da aus der einen Quellle in sekundenschnelle siedend heißes Wasser strömt während in der anderen ein eiswürfelähnlicher Aggregatszustand erreicht wird.
Im Web wird dieses Haus mit einer gewaltigen Bildsprache in Szene gesetzt. Die liebevolle Ausstattung und das besondere Flair der Insel drängte sich in unseren Wahrnehmungen nicht in den Vordergrund. Allenfalls an der Raumhöhe von knapp fünf Metern fanden wir großen Gefallen.
Das Hotel befindet sich südlich des Grand Canal und man erreicht die Grafton Street im Zentrum zu Fuß in 30 Minuten. Die Fahrstrecken der gelben Stadtbusse erschließen sich einem gewöhnlichen Tagestouristen nicht auf den ersten Blick, da keinerlei Routen grafisch verzeichnet sind. Unterstützung gewährt auf Grund mangelnder Kenntnis des öffentlichen Nahverkehrs das Hotelpersonal nicht. So ist man im Winter ausschließlich auf eine Erkundung zu Fuß angewiesen. Wir empfanden dies jedoch nicht als störend.
Grundsätzlich ist das Haus für zwei Erwachsene mit Kind empfehlenswert. Für irische Verhältnisse ist der Preis angemessen.
