The National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) is a not for profit, membership-​based organisation. Its secretariat in Dublin 12 supports a team of dedicated volunteers operating in eight regions.

NISO’s main drive is to promote the practice and knowledge of health and safety. It provides health and safety advice; organises training courses and seminars as well as events together with providing regular information bulletins.

History

Established in 1963.

In 1963 the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) was formed as a voluntary body representative of the social partners, Government, Employers’ and Workers’ Unions to promote Safety and Health in the Workplace.

In 1966, the Department of Labour was established. Factory Inspectorate plus Administrative backup including NISO transferred to this new Department. NISO Secretariat transferred from Department of Industry and Commerce to Department of Labour.

In 1988, the First Occupational Safety and Health Foundation Course was held. This was the first recognised safety course established in Ireland.

In 1989 the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) was established under the terms of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 1989. NISO Secretariat with the Industrial Inspectorate and Administrative Backup were transferred to the new HSA.

In 1992, NISO became a limited company by guarantee as it operated independently of the HSA.
