Way back when my parents were still of the opinion that their darling daughter had, hidden somewhere, a fountain of musical talent, I played the flute and the tin whistle. They soon discovered that no amount of practice(which I admit was limited) or lessons could expunge my total and utter lack of musicality from my(otherwise spotless) talent record. However, while I pressed on in the vain hope that somehow I would tap into an as yet undiscovered ability, McCullough Piggots helpfully assisted in supplying me with instruments and improbable sheet music. Although two seperate companies(the instrumental and sheet music ones), they operate from the same premises and are helpful for all things musical. They have a great range of music, from the Beatles for flute to Chopin for guitar(OK, the last one I made up, but it wouldn’t surprise me). Anyway, a great place if you’re looking for sheet music in particular, or just want something new to show off at the next family get together…

Ok, professional musicians aren’t exactly lining up to swear by this place, but it’s a good solid stockist for sheet music and instruments — strings, wind, percussion, guitar and keyboards(no real pianos). For a beginner’s instrument it’s fine — but as with any music purchase, if you’re not in the game yourself, get advice from someone who is — apart from the sales staff. The selection of sheet music here is good, but not as good as Opus II around the corner. Though sometimes you’ll find stuff here when Opus II is sold out. The best thing about McCullough Piggot’s is a very useful service where for a small fee they can print you off sheet music from a large database: so you can just buy the one song you want, rather than forking out for the whole book. Handy.
