Joker’s Chair

This memorial is a tall backed metal chair (brass maybe?) in the northern side of the main central area within Merrion Square. You will usually see people taking a photo in the chair as they walk through the park. It is a nice focal point within the park and not a bad addition to the many memorials tucked away within Merrion Square.

An appropriate memorial for the man who was simply Father Ted to many and who delivered so many immortal lines, including:
«I’m not a fascist, I’m a priest. Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas… priests… More drink!»
Take a load off and remember the good times…

It’s easy to miss this memorial. It’s located in Merrion Square Park, wedged between a bench and a tree. It’s called the Jester’s Chair and is in memory of the comedy genius that was Dermot Morgan. He was largely known for his part as Father Ted. He had always been involved in various projects at home and abroad but Fr Ted gave him mainstream fame. It won several BAFTAs.
Tragically he died very young, 45, from a heart-​attack. So this statute is fitting to a man that broke the mould for Irish comedy, so much so that it took the UK to fully embrace his stroke of mastery with Fr. Ted

If you are a fan of Father Ted, then this is a spot you must visit. Dermot Morgan was the star of this show and passed away very suddenly in the prime of his acting career. There is a lovely memorial to him in St. Stephen’s Green in the form of a chair with some very interesting shapes carved into it. It is in a peaceful spot of the park and I think Dermot smiles every time he sees someone take a seat on his chair.
