In Nealons tonight and prices have been raised again! Captain Morgan and Coke 7.30 and the George only Charging 4.10 for the same drink. Sound like greedy unappreciative owner that still wont put the a/c on. Staff great and beautiful venue. looks like this bar will be empty in a few months.

If you want an authentic pub experience in Dublin, you won’t do better. It’s an easy walk from Christchurch just north of the river, enough off the beaten path to not attract the hordes. It ended up being a handy home base between points of interest throughout my stay. I happened to be there on NYE before heading to points beyond and the crowd was exceptionally festive. A following night there was a coal fire and a bit of live music. Most afternoons and evenings you can count on a perfect pint, a modest crowd, and good conversation. The staff are swell, and visitors are treated warmly. I set out trying to find out whether this was a predominantly gay establishment as rumored or only on certain nights. Well, it’s neither. As I found throughout Dublin, whether you are gay or straight is of little concern to most people and Dubliners seem pretty comfortable mixing. The regulars I met were from all walks. The Dublin Bears host event upstairs on occasion, but you want a traditional gay club try Panti Bar or The George.

A lovely place for a standard few pints. Its comfy, the booze is well priced, and they take cards. Its a good traditional pub, and a lovely spot for a pint or cup of tea and a chat.

Jack Nealon’s is a great pub, just off the beaten track. Like literally, just off it. This pub is in prime location, but doesn’t seem to be very well known. I love it! The staff is incredibly friendly. The bar is split across two floors. Both being very spacious with quite a bit of seating. Sports on in daytime and music at night, it’s a comfortable atmosphere to say the least. They also serve lunch, although I haven’t tried that yet. Favorite menu item: Carlsberg pint and a Jägerbomb. Mmmm

old, grotty, spit on the floor sort of place… in short, a proper irish pub.

One drinks Guinness to forget the world’s noise. I like to think that being Irish means I know how to slow down and remember that the chaos of the world is man made. What’s the big rush? It’s not healthy. In Nealon’s on this beautiful sunny day I waited patiently whilst the young bartender coaxed my drink to life. I listened to the banter. I got dirty looks when I took out my fancy phone to check my e-mails. I admonished myself for bringing the artificial rush into the sanctuary of the natural pace. This modern world makes silence between thoughts or words embarrassing and in someway a poor reflection on your social skills… You could be updating your status but instead you should be looking at the ironed in laughter marks of the auld man to your left chatting to his friend and learn. That to me is what being Irish is. It’s so much more than a nationality. It’s a state of mind. To be Irish to me is remember that precious time with friends, family, nature and more importantly yourself. In Nealon’s you get the chance to sit and be still and reflect on your thoughts. So to that I say — happy belated St. Patricks day to you all and remember to slow down.

Jack Nealon’s is one of those old-style pubs that do exactly what it says on the tin– they serve drinks. And if they do that in a comfortable pub, which also boasts a nice, relaxed atmosphere you’re on to a winner. Nealon’s hasn’t changed at all in the last 7 years, even though the clientele seems to have changed slightly. With Pantibar just across the road, a lot of gays seem to be heading into Nealon’s when Pantibar is too crowded. But since Nealon’s is a pretty welcoming place you can see why they would. Nealon’s is an institution on Capel Street and I for one can’t see that changing any time soon. So if you’re in the area and fancy a pint…

With all the sex shops, Capel Street on Dublin’s north side can be a bit sleazy — but not Nealon’s. This is a lovely big bar that manages to be roomy and cosy all at once. I spent a New Year’s Day here chilling out by the fire with a friend of mine some years ago and it was really bliss. I’ve also been in here on weekend nights and the place has been rocking. It’s a very lively for a pub that could be considered to be off the beaten track from the centre of the town’s nightlife. The cocktails are slightly cheaper than average, although I had a Cosmo here once and it wasn’t actually a Cosmo. It was a great big wine glass of vodka with cranberry juice(tasty mind you!). That was a while back when the cocktail menu was new-ish so I’m sure they’ve improved since. I would definitely go back in when I’m in the area.

If you’re looking for somewhere with wax-covered candelabras then look no further — there’s at least one upstairs in this Capel Street institution. What ever happened to the goth bar? Anyway, surrounded by sex shops and furniture shops, Nealon’s is a pretty solid bet any time of the day. Ideal for a swifty on a Saturday afternoon, especially if you fancy a flutter on the horses. At night-time, the crowd is as they say mixed: it would appear that it’s becoming the pub of choice for groups of older gay men. A good choice as a meeting place or a post cinema pint, it might get a bit dull after a prolonged period. Avoid if possible congregating in the pathway to the toilets as the narrow thoroughfare will make for an uncomfortable night.
