If you look at Howth on the map you’ll see that it is only barely stuck to the mainland. During the last Ice Age, Howth, and its near neighbours Malahide and Clontarf, became detached from the Southside(geologists believe they originated somewhere around Blackrock/Booterstown), floated up the coast and got stuck. The Dart was built to help the displaced Southsiders find their way home. For the rest of us, that self same Dart allows us easy access to the Hill of Howth. You climb it, get sunburned and scratched by the gorse, eat some sandwiches, look at the sea for a while, walk back down and get the train home. Ok, I’m not selling it very well but it’s actually a great day out.
