The food here is always of a very high standard, in this case they had catered plates of sandwiches and fairy cakes, an interesting combination to say the least. The sandwiches contained just the right amount of filling that you did not need to dislocate your jaw in order to take a bite out of it, and yet not so little that you need a microscope to see it. They were fresh and very tasty to say the least. The cup cakes were moist and spongy, just like I remember them being from when I was a kid. Although I found the colours of the icing a little garish, it was very nice, if not a little too much icing on them for my tastes. The ultimate thing about these cup cakes had to be the decoration on top of them, it was either one of a variety of brightly coloured jelly candy, or a half milk/half dark chocolate heart. The staff are always exceedingly friendly and happy to help. Especially given that there were 3 young girls present who between exploring the place under the legs of the staff, and who also only seemed to want the little bits of decoration off the top of the cup cakes, rather than the cakes beneath, the staff remained perky and friendly throughout the event.

My friends stayed here for three nights over the New Year and on the plus side the hotel itself is beautiful, is in an excellent location and they got an extremely good deal. Furthermore the bar staff were super helpful at all times. I spent quite a bit of time here with them so I witnessed all this. And the room itself was lovely too. On the down side one of my mates and I ate in the restaurant — O’Connell’s — and it was odd to say the least. OK, so it was New Year’s Day so I guess it wasn’t running at its usual speed, but the food was pretty poor. We only wanted something light so we stuck to the first course ‘buffet’, which we had to go up to get. The plates were not that big and the stuff on offer was well below average. The prawn cocktail and the chickpea salad were among the most appealing and when we asked what the crab meat salad was the waiter serving us didn’t know and yelled into the kitchen to ask the manager right in front of us. The manager hesitated before saying what it was, which alarmed us! They did feed us plenty of brown bread, although it wasn’t the freshest. With two glasses of wine the bill was about € 30 and to be honest I’d rather go to a chipper than dine there again. There was hardly anyone else in the restaurant, which made the atmosphere a tad depressing. But like I said, it was New Year, so maybe O’Connell’s is better on a regular day. That shouldn’t be the case mind you. If they’re opened they should be giving the best!

The former Berkeley Court Hotel Dublin is now known as the D4 Ballsbridge Court Hotel Dublin. There are 2 other ‘D4’ hotels located beside this one, the D4 Ballsbridge Inn Hotel(formerly Jury’s Ballsbridge) and the D4 Ballsbridge Towers Hotel(formerly Jury’s Towers Ballsbridge. Now I was due to meet a friend in the area last week, and she suggested the Berkely Court. I actually thought it was the old Jury’s so I got really confused. They are both right beside each other, so I presumed they were one hotel, and it took me ages to figure out that they were separate! Anyway, this is a very old school kind of hotel. You know the type — diamonds on the carpets and all that mularky. We were only meeting for coffee so we retreated to a little outside area out the back — it’s just a few tables and chairs with a lovely leafy surrounding. You have to go through the bar to get to it. I thought it was really nice — and our waiter was extremely friendly.
