Bookcube Gallery & Bookshop

I have a secret addiction … I love to buy books. Who cares if I don’t have the time to read them and I’ve still got a list of about 100 other books that I bought and want to read, but haven’t gotten the time to read them, I still want more. The Rathmines Book Shop is the kind of place that sets my heart a flutter, it’s got books and lots of them. They’re piled right up to the ceiling there’s so many!
The other really amazingly cool thing about this place is part of the space the shop occupies is being used as an art gallery. Try and beat that Eason’s! As a poor little student myself I understand the struggle it is to be a student and to get your work out there and to make a name for yourself. The Bookcube Gallery tries to do just that for recent Art graduates. They only display the work of those who have just passed their course, and the coolest part is that they just pick the names out of a hat. So really everybody is in with a chance!

Go up the stairs and to the right is the gallery space and to the left is the bookshop. A new exhibition was being prepared when I visited, so the gallery space was mainly empty, in glaring contrast to the bookshop, which really wasn’t. With shelves to the ceiling, there are thousands of books arranged in roughly alphabetical order but in double rows, which means that you really have to dig to find what you want. That is actually half the fun and you feel a real sense of achievement when you draw forth a Margaret Atwood that you haven’t read before. The prices are reasonable too…
