Bagots Hutton Wine Emporium

I love this place. It’s really atmospheric, the lighting, the wine — sigh :-) I think I could live here!
I’ve been a couple of times. The food is pretty darn tasty. Try the bruschetta to start — there’s a few choices — parma ham, bresaola, smoked salmon. I’ve tried the bresaola — it’s delicious! They come served on a wooden board and the portion size is pretty impressive. The menu simple, will it be pizza or pasta? The pizzas are good, if you’re feeling adventurous you can try the ‘moussaka pizza’!
Couple of not so great things on the last visit. The service was SO SLOW. 10 minutes to get a menu, 20 to order. you get the picture. It was quite busy so I’m guessing that they just weren’t expecting such a large crowd of a Wednesday.
I came in a group of six (we had reserved a table) and were seated in the couch area. The table was below knee level and was there barely enough room to fit the plates. A realllly uncomfortable way to dine. There’s plenty of ‘normal’ setting for smaller groups though, don’t despair!

Nice feel about this place with the comfortable sofas and art work dotted across the walls that you can buy if your so inclined.
My Rioja was excellent but perhaps a little light on the pour. I would happily return. If wine not your thing they have beers and cocktails.

I wish I could give 3.5!
We arrived here about 4:45 (it was January) to be informed that they wouldn’t be open until 5pm (websites say 3pm but not in January)
Anyhow the chap who greeted me allowed us to enter.
Just had two glasses of wine so can’t give higher as didn’t try the food. V much left to own devices once the order was placed. I noticed that other people who came in after us got bigger glasses of wine which I was disappointed about!
It was v quiet when we were there as a few more people arrived but lovely setting. We took a couch rather than the tables because the chairs at the front looked like they were straight out of my old primary school!!!
Really nice feel to this place — nice addition to South William Street :)

Very chill ambiance, delicious pizza and the wine was lovely. Overall very reasonably priced and great location!

Swit swoo… Me likes it in here! Fave space is to the back with the chesterfield sofas or if just an intimate /​for 2 outing, dine in the cave out back!
I really enjoyed my time here, great wine menu plus the food menu has great options, from nibbles/​sharing cheer & meat plates to full on main meals.
Staff were friendly, service was quick and great turnaround. This is quite a popular spot so it’s worth considering a reservation particularly if there is a group or if it’s a Friday/​Saturday night.
You’d easily miss this place as it’s down a basement level off South William Street; there is a plaque on the gate but signage is minimal. Highly recommend, it’s a great find!

Full disclosure: this place is owned by the boyfriend of my girlfriend’s friend, but I didn’t let that skew my judgement.
Lots of plusses to this establishment:
– cool downstairs entrance that makes you feel like you’re a part of the Brat pack
– great atmosphere with several separate seating areas, all appropriately (dimly) lit for fun/​romance
– badass drinks; my several G&Ts came in giant sangria glasses and were literally the best I’ve ever had
– interesting people; we saw a dude from Game of Thrones chilling in there
– the owner is a nice guy

If you’re short on time, then just know that as a global traveler and food critic, I give Bagot Hutton the HIGHEST POSSIBLE recommendation.
But hopefully you will read on, because this is a very unusual review…
First, I have to be quite impressed to even bother to leave a review of any length for anyone, but my goal here is to leave the BEST review they have ever received. Here’s why…
Often when you have a good meal, it’s because something tasted amazing. This is one of those rare occasions where EVERYTHING tasted amazing.
Certainly the salmon Farfalle pasta was out of this world — Quality and flavor you would expect from the finest Italian restaurants.
But I also had a meat and cheese board — Not something you would typically write or rave about, but let me tell you:
— I’m a very picky cheese lover, and the cheese was one of the best I ever had.
— The proscuito ham was easily the best I ever tasted… Tender and a bit spicy. Simply amazing.
— Even the olives and sun dried tomatos probably would win awards… And I don’t even like tomatos!
— And great fresh Italian bread.
Now, if you’re a tourist, know that Dublin’s best pubs and restaurants tend to be hidden under buildings down narrow staircases you would walk right past if you didn’t know the establishments were there.
And this place is no exception — It’s where all the locals go to eat, drink and be merry. You’ll notice everyone seems to know everyone, so once the cat’s out of the bag that you’re a visitor (like I was), be prepared to enjoy some SERIOUS Irish hospitality, and experience personal attention and charm from the owner Giovanni.
And GET THIS — Giovanni discovered a 350 year old long cave wine cellar with the original stone arch pillars, knocked out the wall for access, and now it’s all lit up with candles and lounge tables, where you can enjoy a bite or drink in centuries-​old style, older than most pubs anywhere in Dublin, or the world for that matter.
And if you ask Giovanni WHY the place is named Bagot Hutton, you will hold in your hand an semi-​ancient Irish artifact that involves whiskey and babies.
So Bagot Hutton has it all — Charm, hospitality, and 5 Star food @ 3 Star prices.
And NOW you know WHY I wanted to write so much, for someone who rarely writes anything…

Came here on a Saturday night after reading other Unilocal reviews, and was not disappointed! Friend and I were looking for a nice place to have dinner and drinks, which was both not too «restaurant-​ey» and not too «pub-​ey» and this place was just the right spot for it!
Located on south William Street it’s really central no matter where in town you’re coming from, but at the same time because it’s downstairs kind of in the basement seems like they don’t get many off the street walk-​ins, which means we were able to book a table for a Saturday night with only an hour’s notice no problem at all! Score.
So the place itself was lovely. Front room was nice and cosy, beyond it they have couches more suitable for just drinks and further out the back they have this cool little alcove type corridor with some tables and a really nice ambience. This place is nicely done!
So the food menu was good. Not too extensive, mostly Italian style, good portion sizes and no too dear for Dublin prices. Staff were also very friendly and dressed very smart.
The wine and cocktails list was of a good variety too. I strayed from my usual default of sauvingnon blanc and opted instead for the pinot grigio, it was delicious. Red wines looked good too with a good variety, and again, reasonably priced.
So all up this was a good choice. The atmosphere was really nice. It was good for dinner, but also nice for a drink. There was nice background music playing, but not too loud so it’s good for a nice dinner/​drinks/​catchup session just as I had in mind!

I went out there on Friday with my friend. I couldn’t find this restaurant cuz I didn’t know that there are under floor. and then I came to there, I was surprised! Because there is nice atmosphere like a luxury.
Foods and wine is nice! If you can’t decide wine, you should ask stuffs. They choice for you. I’d like to go there some time soon again.

Fabulous in every way!
This hard to find gem is located downstairs off south William street. It feels almost cave like and is the perfect setting for an Italian restaurant and wine bar.
The lighting is dim, the mood is calm, and the food is FANTASTIC! I went on a Friday night with 10 others. We made a reservation and our waiter greeted us at the door and walked us back to our seats personally. I think our waiter may actually be host/​waiter/​only front of house employee. And he was great!
The seating consisted of a couch, low tables and benches. We ate with our plates in our laps. We got the house white and red, a cab and sauvignon blanc. They were not great, but they were the cheapest! This is an emporium we’re talking about here so they had TONS of other options.
The food was absolutely amazing. I got the Cacio e Pepe gnocchi. Basically, cheesy gnocchi! I also tried the carbonara and the lasagna… I kid you not, it was some of the best pasta I’ve ever had. To start we also had the meat and cheese boards that were also amazing!
This would be a perfect date spot and is in a great location if you want to head out afterwards!

Lovely little spot! You might miss it as it’s just a gate with a small sign, and then have to go down the stairs.
It’s dimly lit, lots of candlelight and I’d say perfect for a date. They also have a few bigger tables, so it’s good for groups as well.
We shared the mix platter (25 quid) and oh nomnomnom. I liked all of the meat/​cheese, different oils, some veggies. We were informed their wine changes daily, so you can choose from the blackboard. I had an amazing glass of sauvignon blanc (in fact, it was so good, I ordered another one)
They serve food up to 11 I think. And afterwards they stay open until 2.30 am if you want to enjoy a few more lovely glasses of wine. HICCUP!

Prácticamente teníamos el local para nosotros solos, y la verdad es que nos trataron espectacularmente. El sitio está un poco escondido (en el típico sótano de una casa inglesa) pero no cuesta mucho encontrarlo (está bastante a la vista). Cuando llegamos, había mesas repartidas por todo el local, con sillas a su alrededor y platos de charcutería repartidos por doquier. La charcutería estaba increíble, deliciosa.
Para amenizar la velada, y los diferentes productos que fueron saliendo; nos agasajaron con vinos chilenos que, la verdad, estaban muy buenos. Como español, siempre defenderé el vino nacional por encima de todo, porque creo que somos un país de grandes caldos; pero también creo que los chilenos tienen una mano impresionante con el zumo de uva. Además del plato de charcutería, comimos pizza (que fue, creo, lo que menos me gustó), platos de pasta –muy riquísimos– y una variedad de postres que estaban ricos como para caerse de espaldas.
La comida estaba muy buena, pero sinceramente creo que todo en este bar es… el espacio. El espacio es precioso, espectacular, maravilloso. Un sitio único y con un servicio magnífico, el dueño estuvo toda la noche acomodándonos, trayéndonos la comida y haciendo que nos sintiéramos como en casa, al tiempo que permanecía absolutamente impecable (una de las cosas que solo puede hacer un italiano: seguir perfectamente elegante aunque esté trabajando como si no hubiera un mañana). Encima tienen cócteles impresionantes. De verdad, alucinante el lugar. ¡No os lo perdáis, Dubliners!

First impressions as we were seated in the section near the main door were along the lines of «bloody hell, last time I saw seating this cramped, I was in Paris»
It’s true, it’s a little snug in there, but it really didn’t take long to forget our surrounds and become engrossed in the menu. There was lots to engage and piqué our interests.
After much deliberation we opted for a shared starter of the small mixed charcuterie board, it was € 20 and more than enough for the two of us. The cheeses and meats on the board were some of the best I have tasted in a long time. This was washed down with a bottle of Italian cab sauv, perfectly and typically Italian — a little rough edge that worked perfectly with the charcuterie.
We went the pizza route for mains, mine was a very tasty thin base spicy salami affair, Wifeys was a very excellent and odd moussaka pizza, definitely worth a shot. This was all accompanied by a second bottle of the cab-​sauv.
Aside from some superb service and a slightly entertaining episode with some very very squiffy patrons, the end of the main course very definitely marked the end of our meal… We had over indulged, there was no space for dessert, coffee or digestif, the mere thought of them was enough to send us running
Well, I say running, I mean we got strangers to take turns in rolling us down Grafton St.
Bagots Hutton shall definitely be done again — if only to sit in the comfy looking couches in the back and knock back a little more wine with a cheese board.

Quelle superbe découverte ! J’ai découvert ce bar à vin à l’italienne lors d’une soirée organisée pour les CMs Unilocal.Bonheur !
Les festivités commencent avec une dégustation de fromages (exquise !) et la découverte des vins rouge et blanc que l’équipe du restaurant nous avait réservé pour l’occasion. Puis ce fut un défilé de plats tous plus savoureux les uns que les autres: gnocchis au fromage, lasagnes végétariennes, lasagne classique au boeuf, pizzas… Tout est absolument délicieux ! Je né vous parle même pas de leur choix de desserts ! La gourmande que je suis s’est régalée de nouveau et a eu un gros coup de coeur pour leur gâteau au chocolat. Ce dernier fondait en bouche comme un nuage chocolaté. Là tout de suite, je m’en reprendrai bien une part. Je né peux malheureusement pas vous donner d’infos sur les prix car comme je vous l’ai dit plus haut, le contexte était une soirée de CMs Unilocal mais une chose est sûre, si je reviens à Dublin, cette adresse fera partie de mes incontournables. Je vous la conseille vivement également !
Petit +: Mojito et espresso martini sur la carte des cocktails.

Last night of a short stay in Dublin and we were exhausted and ravenous… found this place on Unilocal (highest rating closest to our hotel) and could barely find it on the street! Walked down into the crowded restaurant with no reservation and were immediately accommodated with a smile. Great food, excellent service, comfortable funky atmosphere… wish we were staying longer so we could come back. Excellent off the radar joint for wine and food lovers. And the stuffed peppers on the cheese tray were delicioussssss.
Make sure you venture back into the cave!

Beste Whiskey Sour in town! Even though I haven’t been to the entire Dublin bar scene. beat that! :D
I like italian food, I like good music (house) and I like cocktails. But I never would have expected to meet all this in one single bar/​restaurant or what so ever! What a crazy combination.
It might not be the best italian place, but it surely is the best with Whiskey Sour: D And you can win my heart with a good Sour and egg white!
So if you are around, don’t be afraid climbing downstairs and enjoy this crazy cool place with your partner or a whole group of foodies, music lovers: D
staff is amazingly nice and quick! The barkeeper is competent and enjoys challenges. So don’t be afraid to order cocktails off the beaten path!

Un très très très chouette bar à Dublin ! Si aux pubs et bières vous préférez le vin et les cocktails, le Bagots Hutton est le bar qu’il vous faut.
Le bar se situe sous le niveau de la route et on s’attend à un tout petit endroit, mais en réalité les lieux sont spacieux et très bien agencés, avec différentes petites salles en enfilade. Bougies, petites tables et des tonnes de choses délicieuses à manger et boire, ça m’a énormément plu !
En toute honnêteté, je né peux pas juger du rapport qualité-​prix, y étant allée dans la cadre de la CM Week Unilocal à Dublin et n’ayant rien payé, mais je peux dire que les produits étaient de qualité. Bons fromages, bonne charcuterie, bons plans italiens, bons vins, très bons desserts (miam, ce gâteau au chocolat sans gluten) et j’en oublie.
J’ai fini sur un Gin & Tonic bien à mon goût, parfait !
Une chose est sûre, si je retourne à Dublin, je retournerai volontiers au Bagots Hutton !

We hired the place out for a private party and got to taste a whole range of stuff from the menu.
The wine was great, the salami/​cheese platter really started the night off well.
The atmosphere is mega cosy and I could picture it being a great date place. The staff were super welcoming and passionate about their food.
Now, I’m going to try to not blabber on for half an hour about the cheesy gnocchi but please forgive me if I do: IT WAS THE MOST GORGEOUS THING EVER.
Gnocchi is hard to get right I find. Often it’s either too stodgy or too raw. This was light, small little balls of utter heaven. The sauce was delish also, light but also cheesy, just as I like it.
So, yeah, definitely would go back there!

Si vous né devez aller que dans un bar à Dublin, c’est celui ci !
Très sympa, cosy et chaleureux. Ce bar m’a tellement plu ! La déco est sympa; avec de très belles photos de Lou Reed, Springsteen (oui, après ça, je n’étais plus objective). Ils font une cuisine italienne excellente. Charcuterie, fromages, lasagnes … Et surtout leur desserts (notemment le cheesecake aux fruits rouges).
Les cocktails sont incroyables, et le barman très cool. Il vous écoute et vous aide à choisir pile ce qu’il vous faut ! Ils proposent entre autre des Expressos Martinis, Gin Tonic, Mojitos …

Bagot Hutton is one of my fav places around town at the mo. Was there last night again, nice vibe in the place. On Tuesdays, you get a free cheese board with every bottle of wine or prosecco. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean their standards slip, there is a good variety of cheeses on it. All in all very good value and well worth checking out when around Dublin. Pizza is pretty good too.

The first time I entered this heavenly wine universe was last summer. Now it was after the Blur concert so was slightly dazed by Alex James other worldly beauty but the wine was spot on, the meat and cheese balanced the wine to perfection and the couches were exactly what I thought, comfy.
When I realised this summer that they had introduced a kitchen to the place, I said Tally ho folks we’re going!
I had booked a table for my boyfriends birthday (hoping for the wine cave but it’s closed Mon — Wed, plus side note* they don’t serve food in there.) So we got a table by the door which was perfect and ordered a small meat and cheese plate to start and of course a bottle of Malbec. They don’t do wine lists here as their wine changes frequently so ask the server what they recommend also don’t forget to mention your price point for it.
My boyfriend ordered a pizza whilst I went for their decadent Cacio E Pepe — very addictive cheesy gnocchi, with pear and black pepper. Now let me tell you this, my life changed after this dish. That cheesy goodness was like nothing I had tasted before. It was seasoned with sin and drenched in happiness, my it was delicious. However I could not eat a whole bowl, let alone half of it as it’s quite filling so if you are anyway partially gluten intolerant stay away.
My boyfriends pizza had a perfect thin base and hit the spot, not quite Pizza E Porchetta or Paulies but Bagots Huttons effort was still yum.
The downside to the meal was that though the service was very warm and welcoming, it was still very slow and we had to wait 50 mins for our main. This is why I docked it one star.
Very affordable, absolutely decadent and of course wine to die for!

Found the novelty and sheer size of the owner’s great Dane Volton amusing whilst sipping on wine with friends. He lay opposite us on the comfy red leather couches not a bother on him. I’m sure he himself could recommend a wine or two.
Cheese board was tasty.
Would go again for the cellar cosey feel.
Interior very sexy and seductive for a romantic date if looking to impress.
Went midweek lovely for catch up.

I love this place. Great staff, an interesting wine selection, and an enormous dog who I presume can be used as transport by inebriated customers*.
*may be a horrible lie!
