Off the beaten track BEEHIVEHUTS! SUPERCUTELITTLEHUTS! OK this is a total 15 to 20 min stop, maybe 10 if your not a photo taker. But if you bump it up with a nice drive around Dingle it is worth it and you can bet most people have not seen this in Ireland. After checking in to our B&B my friend and I decided to head out see what Dingle had to offer! While driving around looking at the BEAUTIFULSCENERY and making a mental note of the bars we wanted to hit up later we drove up/down the toward the coast. We ran into theses little huts going west on R559. First we saw one hopped out to check it out then once back in the car moments later we noticed more of these little stone stacked house looking huts and of course we hopped out yet again to see them and take pictures. This time we had to pay 2 Euro but not too bad! We found out the money helps to maintain the little beehive huts by some national group. I don’t know the name because I didn’t ask! It was 2 euro people! These neat little structures can be a single building(one room) or larger ones with several rooms, and some even have underground chambers as we saw as we strolled the hillside. There are many theories of how old they are and how they came to be but most assume(which you know what they say when you assume) that they are ancient dwellings, but they have been used for storage in recent history but storage of what I have no idea. For all I know they built them for tourist and are making up the story! Who frickin cares! I’m in Ireland so I want to try and see and experience everything! One reason they are difficult to date is because of the technique of rock construction. I’m no archaeologist so I don’t know anything about rocks except the ones they shine, and look good on my finger, ears, neck and wrist and tend to be referred to as carrots! But most believe they date from the 1100’s when Norman conquerors forced the Irish off the best land and out onto the far reaches of the Dingle Peninsula. That I looked up that little fact, because the only thing I know about Ireland right off the top of my head is Saint Patty’s Day when we over in the U. S like to drink green beer and eat all things Irish and green! And a nice little Jeopardy fact for you… Saint Patrick wasn’t Irish he was Scottish but was nice to the Irish people! BAM! I learned that while I was there too! Anyway, where was I… Theses little huts are a nice to see that is off the beaten path while traveling around Dingle! It was both interesting and a fun little visit! Totally worth it since most people only see Dublin!
