Fernroyd House

Tony and Avril are awesome. We got lost on our way to Fernroyd House and we called Tony. He gave us directions over the phone, and then he drove to meet us and we followed him to Fernroyd house and greeted us with a cold beer when we got there. The rooms were great and the common area was even better. Fernroyd house has by far the best breakfast we had in all of Ireland. There were many choices. The scones were the best thing I ever ate. We rented bikes and rode to the blarney castle. The restaurants and bars are easily walk-​able from Fernroyd.

What a great place to stay! It was a little more expensive than some other options around, but Tony and Avril were awesome. There’s nothing else I can say that hasn’t been said on Unilocal or other travel website.

In agreement with everyone else’s posts, Tony and Avril were excellent hosts. They give a good snapshot of the traditional Irish bed and breakfast experience. They are slightly more expensive than the average B&B in Ireland, but they are also very close to the city centre, and that includes parking availability at their house. So you get what you pay for. Breakfast delicious, and rooms kept up very well. I definitely recommend staying here.

By far, the best bed and breakfast in Ireland.
When choosing a bed and breakfast, we look for a home away from home — and that’s exactly what the Fernroyd House was for us.
After spending a week with my family for the holidays, it was hard to leave them for the rest of our travels. Tony and Avril were very warm in welcoming us to their home. Coming in from the rain, they offered us hot cups of tea and freshly homemade scones.
Tony was always available to suggest where to eat, where the music was to be heard and ofered ftips on how to maximize our stay in Cork. He was never in a rush to answer our list of questions.
Our cozy room overlooked the courtyard. Every morning, we were greeted by Mr. Chipper, one of two pooches that reside at Fernroyd. He usually laid on one of the steps of the stairway and is the regal symbol of Fernroyd.
The traditional Irish breakfasts were stellar. I still crave them.
The proximity of the Fernroyd to UCC and downtown Cork is ideal for anyone wishing to explore what Cork has to offer. We were able to park our rental car in their driveway.
To Tony and Avril, thanks again for such a wonderful stay. We hope to see you again in the future!

Tony and Avril were awesome hosts, and the B&B is beautifully well-​kept and pretty! As soon as I showed up Tony offered me tea and scones, and then went on to show me on a map all that I would need to know to make my way about Cork in the way of dining, sight-​seeing, bus and train stations, etc. Very helpful. And then the next morning, I got fed a sumptuous breakfast. I had to leave a little early in the mornings to catch a bus and they accommodated me at the breakfast table half an hour before breakfast time! There was someone else at the tables too who had to catch an early train. All in all, I have stayed at beautiful B&Bs before, but it was Tony and Avril’s warmth and genuineness that made this a memorable and special stay. They have invited me to come back with my wife the next time I’m at Cork and, in fact, I look forward to that very much. I very highly recommend them.

My husband and I were in Ireland in April and this was our favorite B&B. We didn’t know where we were going to stay that night, so we looked on Unilocal.There was only one review but with five stars, so we went with it, and we were so glad we did.
Tony and Avril were so sweet and welcoming, and the room was perfect. It was like staying in a friend’s extra bedroom. Tony went through a book on Ireland with us and gave us suggestions on where to visit and restaurants we had to go after we left Cork as well as sitting with us and going through a map of Cork and where we should eat and what we should see while we were there. Their dog Chip is adorable; he just stands out on the sidewalk at the end of the driveway and greets people.
Breakfast was incredible… and I say incredible mostly because of Avril’s scones. They were absolutely heavenly. The best my husband and I have ever had. That’s not to say that the rest of the breakfast wasn’t excellent because it was, but those scones… If ever we get back to Cork, we will be staying with them again.

I picked this B&B based on the two previous Unilocal reviews and I am so glad that I did! Our hosts Tony and Avril were so sweet, I felt like I was staying with family. The rooms were so pretty and comfortable with a good combination of modern meets old fashioned. Their dog Chip is just the cutest dog you’ll ever meet and quiet the friendly greeting when you arrive to the Fernroyd House.
Avril greeted me right away and made sure we were comfortable as soon as we stepped foot in the house. She is a very talented cook as well. When you stay here be prepared to want to eat your weight in her scones. There are several breakfast options to choose from including traditional Irish breakfast, French toast (which I had: yum!), boiled eggs, cereal, and porridge.
Tony is also fabulous. Who needs GPS when you have him with maps, directions, and great suggestions on what to see and where to eat when you are staying in Cork. The B&B has parking spots for its guests so you don’t have to worry about paying for parking (which is a nice perk) and it is located just about five minutes from the City Center on foot.
Food: delicious
Accommodations: comfortable beds, WiFi, mini fridge and hair dryer in room, tea kettle in room, bathrooms en suite, TV in room and in the guest lounge area, and free parking.

STAY HERE. Best B&B of our entire trip.
Tony & Avril. And Chip. Ah, Chip. What is there even to say? I wanted them to be my family, not just my hosts in Cork. (p.s. Chip is the family Westie and is the unofficial sentry of the house, greeting guests from his post at the front door).
I felt like we were truly guests in Tony and Avril’s house. Avril greeted us when we first arrived and gave us the lay of the land. At breakfast the next day we met Tony for the first time, however Avril had already filled him in on where we had gone the day before and he greeted us as if we had known him for years. We mentioned that friends of ours had recommended the place and he knew them immediately by name. Wow.
I almost forgot the scones. Let’s be honest, scones are not what I came to Ireland for. I’ve been to tea in the states before and I could take them or leave them. Avril, your scones rock my world. I spent the rest of the trip trying to find a comparable pastry and couldn’t. I may be emailing you for the recipe.
We were there for such a short amount of time but the Fernroyd House has definitely left a lasting impression. This is one of the most sincerely gracious families you will ever meet and I was honored to be a guest in their home. I only hope that I have the privilege of returning!

Best Bed & Breakfast in the ENTIRE country! Avril and Tony’s take on modern B&B-ing is simply unmatchable. They have set a new standard in hospitality.
We arrived to find two incredibly energetic, young people who are equally enthusiastic about their city. They were quick to make us feel at home in their adorable home. While the house certainly has touches of traditional Irish flair, the overall feeling of the room is very contemporary. It is clear that Tony and Avril have spent quiet a bit of time taking their B&B into the next century. They have all the high quality conveniences of a modern hotel while still maintaining the wonderful homey feelings of a B&B. They have power showers, fresh/​crisp bedding, and about the best hospitality we received on our tour of the country.
Both Tony and Avril were noticeably excited about having guests. Being several days into our trip already, we were a bit tired. But their energy was a breath of fresh air that we needed. Their enthusiasm continued from the moment we checked in to the moment we sadly checked out.
So they get an A for the Bed, now let’s talk about the Breakfast. OMG. It was amazing. Goodbye to the old traditional Irish breakfast and HELLO YUMMIES! While they did pay respect to the Irish traditions, they certainly go above and beyond to put their signature on the first meal of the day. French toast, fresh cut fruit, yogurt… and the most amazing scones I have ever had in my entire life. My visit to Fernroyd was several months ago and I can still close my eyes and remember the yum-​tastic treat that breakfast was that March morning.
I will return to Ireland again. And when I do, I plan more than one evening with Tony and Avril. See you then!
