Delivery website malfunctioned and I got yelled at by the delivery man as a result. I ordered my groceries to be delivered as my newborn twins were in hospital and I could not drive because of recent surgery. I realized after making my order that I could not be there to receive the delivery as I had to go into the hospital so I changed the delivery slot using the edit function on the website and received an email confirming the change. Then the delivery man called me at the time of the cancelled delivery slot and read me the riot act for not being there to receive the delivery, I tried to explain what had happened(mentioning that I was in hospital) and he refused to accept that I had changed the delivery slot, told me that the food was already paid for and I would have to go to Supervalu churchtown to pick up my delivery! Never buying from Supervalu again.

I love this place… I know, it’s only a supermarket. … but its a really good one.

Churchtown Super Valu is bright and friendly-looking. The prices are fine enough, though some of the fresh stock looks a bit withered and/or colourless. I find people of many generations shopping here. This unassuming location is the only place on our island that stocks a devoted section of kosher food. Not so strange considering the minimal population of people who require it. Yes, you can find the odd package in other stores that bears the seal of rabbinic approval, but SV does the specialized stuff and puts it all in one(tiny) spot. They used to have a Kosher Korner, sending Jews of all ages shuffling to the back of the store to stock up, but with a remodel that corner’s been taken by the bakery. Kosher stuff now gets 1⁄8 of a shelf, floor to ceiling, in the middle of the store plus the fridge across the aisle. It’s not my local supermarket so I only tend to go there twice a year for special holiday supplies. The kosher area is hit or miss depending what they’ve ordered in, but you can count on soup mixes, salad dressings, some kind of chocolates and sweets, and oodles of matzo. In the fridges are fresh and prepared meat, cheeses, and old standards(kugel and hummus). If you’ve ever wanted to know what sausages taste like when made without pork, SV Churchtown’s your man.

I really like Super Valu! The have great deals all the time. They also have a nice selection of scones, cakes, tea bracks etc. I love that they also employ older people rather than surly 17 year olds. The bag packers are also fantastic if you are doing a big shop. If there was one closer to me, I think I’d shop here all the time.

Super Valu is really the bottom feeder in terms of supermarkets. Nowhere near the standard of Superquinn or Marks & Spencer and not even up to the middle rung of the supermarket ladder near Dunnes or Tesco, Supervalu really doesn’t stand a next to these supermarket elites. They have some good deals from time to time, but the quality of their own brand stuff isn’t up to scratch and their deli counter is fairly disappointing. Only any good if you don’t have other options.
