Café rua serves arguably the best café food in Mayo. We have found that eating out in Mayo can be hit and miss. Anytime we have eaten in Café Rua over the last 5 years or so we have never been disappointed, prices compete with Dublin but the quality far surpasses most cafes in the Dublin area. Their brown bread is the real stuff and the specials are very good, they serve a really good breakfast with sausages from artisan butcher in Newport — Kelly’s(also reviewed, look it up!). Pâté and salad, which is usually on the lunch menu is excellent. I really enjoyed the gubeen and spinach potato cakes on our last visit as did our baby who was happily accommodated in a very comfy baby chair(he couldn’t escape, it was great!). They seem to have a main meal type thing on the menu daily eg bacon and cabbage or beef casserole and the desserts and pastries are fab! Not to be missed if you’re in the West — much better value than similar in Westport.
