A small store but generally a fine selection. Bread and veggies are always fresh, they have a good selection of meat, and a large wine selection. That said, I’ve had to stop shopping here for anything except incidentals for the rather odd reason that they stock lots of filter coffee and have completely stopped stocking coffee FILTERS. I have asked the manager about this in-store and he just blows me off with an ‘they’re coming in soon’(they have been ‘coming in soon’ for 6+ months now). Since I always buy filter coffee with my weekly shop, this means that I have to stop off at Tesco just for filters… easier just to go to Tesco or Dunnes and get it all done in one. Other Supervalus don’t have weird aversions to packets of paper filters, so not sure what’s up with this store. The other complaint that I have is a bit nit-picky but the cashiers almost always greet older regulars in a very friendly manner and have a chat(this is a good thing), but will then not even say ‘hello’ or do anything except snap commands at someone that they don’t know(this is not a good thing, in fact it comes off as downright rude if you see the person ahead of you being treated with smiles and chat, and are then not even offered a courtesty greeting). I avoid certain cashiers who do this very blatently because it just makes me feel bad. In any case, as long as you don’t want filtered coffee and don’t mind a little rudeness, it’s grand.

When you absolutely have to bring home two loaves of soda bread from a trip to Ireland, Superquinn is the place to go to. Fresh fruit and veg looked great too.

Another slightly dark Superquinn, seems to be thing with them, windows are not a priority in this one too(Ranelagh Superquinn is a tad dark too). Anyway, it had everything we needed, including having a few sandwiches made up for a trip to the beach. A-OK

Two words. Cream Doughnut. Ireland is incredibly amazing when it comes to simple, good quality foods. Fresh doughnuts split in half with generous amounts of cream and jam spread in the middle. I think it’s about 1.50 euros. Nonetheless, I definitely prefer these to American doughnuts. Even the doughnut plant. Why? The concept is so simple and so delicious. It’s like the scone with cream and jam. Maybe it’s the whole cream, jam, carb thing. Anyway, I crave these all the time – they are absolutely delicious.

Superquinn is known for stocking high-quality, fresh produce. It has a particularly good reputation for its substantial butchers and fruit and veg sections. I can’t vouch personally for the meat though I’m told it’s usually ‘a fine bita schtuff’, however I would talk in glowing terms about Superquinn’s bakery section. As a child, I was transfixed by the wedding-like cakes on display and the intricately designed cakes and fancies of white, powder blue, pink and yellow with birthday names delicately etched on. There is still a satisfying home bakery smell when you walk in the entrance and the breads and cakes taste deliciously fresh. In general, I find it a more pleasant supermarket to shop around in, somehow less draining than the manic Tesco at the other end of the town.
