The Jockey has a great location where you can comfortably sit outside. Great place to meet friends and watch a futball or rugby match. 5 stars. The prices are a bit on the high side. 3 star. The food is okay. 3 Star. I recommend it for Brunch — 5 star. But for food only, Jaspers around the corner is better.

Ok, so, here’s the thing. I ordered chips. Because they were chips with three sauces. And three sauces sounds like a lot of fun. And then when the sauces came out, it was ketchup, mayo and BBQ sauce. And those are not three sauces! What! Those are condiments. So this is a «British Pub», which is fine. It’s not awful, but there’s nothing amazing on the menu and having now been to about a million British pubs, I can say that it’s kind of a sad imitation with only OK food(my burger was way under cooked.) There apparently lots of options in the area before eating at the races, but even then, I might go elsewhere.

I like The Jockey, but I find myself consistently gravitating towards the Happy Valley Bar & Grill next door. It tends to be my overflow spot if I can’t get a seat at HVBG. The beer list pretty much contains just your standard Hong Kong beers. In terms of location and atmosphere it is excellent, right in the park on the south end of the Happy Valley Racecourse and just steps from the tram stop. You can usually get outdoor tables here and it’s often filled with sports teams enjoying some after-match beers, which gives it a lively and fun vibe. Unfortunately, The Jockey also does not allow dogs at the outside tables anymore, which is a real loss(the same thing is now true at HVBG as well). But, it’s still a good spot to grab a drink on a nice evening. The food is solid-if-unspectacular bar fare, but the burger is a real standout — definitely the best burger in the neighborhood. As I said at the start, I do like The Jockey, and I enjoy myself when I go there, but I find myself at other places in the neighborhood more often than not.

Really more like a 3.5. The Jockey is primed to become my new neighborhood watering hole — they’ve been around for a good while, but I’m new to Happy Valley and this bar is a mere 2-minute walk from my flat. Because it’s located directly across the street from the south end of the Happy Valley Racecourse, The Jockey is especially bustling on Wednesday race nights. It’s a British pub so you’ll most likely see a mix of English, Aussie, and American ex-pats jonesing for a proper pint. Surprisingly, their beer section is really weak. I understand it’s a trade-off situation, as the neighboring Happy Valley Bar & Grill has the superior drink menu/beer list but their food is supposedly pretty average. But I can confirm that The Jockey has great food! All of my dining companions seemed to enjoy their menu items, and I can strongly vouch for their burger. It came perfectly medium rare as requested on a pretzel bun with plenty of cheddar cheese. So juicy! I finished the entire burger; it was just too good to leave a bite to waste. They do have a cider that’ll do, so I guess I can suffer through the disappointing beer list in favor of the awesome real estate and excellent burger. Just a note that their patio is no longer dog-friendly! Boooooo.

Decent bar with al fresco seating until 11pm(strict) and your typical drinks and(British) pub fare. I come here often after a game in HV sports ground. Nothing particularly special with the drinks or food with the exception of the burgers. The burgers are really good here. Although not many know about this place and I certainly wouldn’t expect to see it on any ‘best burgers in HK’ lists, it actually a does have one of the better burgers in HK just lacks the reputation. There’s a wide range of specialty burgers which include avocado, onion rings, fried egg, blue cheese, etc, but I stick with the classic: The Jockey Classic. Just a good beef patty cooked to a proper medium with thick cut fries. Not for me, but a friend noted the veggie burger was also surprisingly good for those looking for an alternative. Like I said, it’s a usually spot after a game across the street but I haven’t found it to be a destination on its own even though I do like the roomy outdoor seating on a nice day. If I lived nearby though, that’d be a different story.

I live right around the corner from The Jockey, making this normally my top choice for bars in Happy Valley. if you know Happy Valley well at all, you will know that there are a limited number of bars to go to, so we really don’t have a lot to choose from. I actually haven’t been to this bar in a while, just because they stopped serving my favourite beer. I used to boast that the bar here serves kroenonbourg blanc on tap… but sadly they don’t have that any more. I am just being picky because there are a very limited number of places that serve that beer on tap, so i was over mooned when I knew they served it here on tap so close to home! Happiness not anymore! I think the manager of the bar changed as well, the guy used to be really friendly and will be more interactive with the bar goers, the last time I was here, it just wasn’t the same. We used to come here a lot for their chicken wings and shephard’s pies. Their buffalo wings, I must say, are really good here. They are fried to perfection then drizzled with a tangy buffalo sauce, with a side of blue cheese dressing. thinking about it is making me crave a bit of that. I like how they have an outdoor patio area where people can bring their dogs. There’s usually a few of them around in the afternoon on a nice day.

I had lunch with a friend at ‘neighbourhood local’ The Jockey in Happy Valley. We chose The Jockey as the clear weather called for an al fresco meal and they are also pet friendly, even filling up bowls with water for your hound. Marginally hungover, the typical pub food menu was exactly what the doctor ordered. We pigged our on chicken tenders, buffalo wings, crab cakes and an epic burger plus multiple bloody Mary’s and a generous slice of cheesecake. It’s by no means a gourmet experience but each item hit the spot and was a consistent standard. Burgers are the main event at the Jockey with several options on offer with toppings ranging from onion rings to blue cheese. Other than finding it tricky to get the staff’s attention, the meal was pretty good and reasonably priced for the amount consumed. Keep an eye on the specials board as they aren’t announced.
