The Artland Co

This place was alright. However, this is coming from someone who grew up with CN Stationary and has shopped at Michaels (In the US) for the past 5 – 6 years. With the limited space in Hong Kong, I understand that it’s hard to stuff thousands of products into a 2000sq ft shop.
There’s really a lot of different types of products, however, the brand selection is rather limited. A lot of Staedtler, Primarily Daler-​Rowney, I guess that’s how Hong Kong art stores are? There’s various high end products for professional artists too.
One thing I didn’t like about the store was I also found some products to be a bit scattered. Like they had a calligraphy section by the counter but also at another aisle, and Chinese calligraphy in another aisle. Many products like paints were organised by brands rather than by type. Yet many products were organised by products too.
I also found the store to be slightly overpriced. The Pilot Parallel pen was $ 95 and it is only at $ 85 the Commercial Press in CWB, and $ 80 in CN. OH well.
Their student level water colour is also quite expensive, Daler-​Rowney Aquafine at $ 455. I can practically buy the artist colours at that price (On amazon at least)
Paper and sketchbooks were nearly all Daler-​Rowney as well. I just wished there’s more variety in brands. However, this place is probably the best on Hong Kong Island and it will do the job if you need anything for your art supplies/​project, etc.
They also opened a mini gallery of a photographer’s work.
Also the hours aren’t very friendly. Closed on Sundays, closed 5pm on Saturdays and 7pm on weekdays. Better rush here after work/​school or come on a Saturday.

Stocking everything from fine arts to finger paint, whatever your artitistic capabilities, Artland probably has the product to match. The store is a craft enthusiats dream come true, everything; paint, pipe cleaners, pompous, featthers, stencils, more paper and card than you could point a logging truck at and the felt (I’ll tell you why I was so excited about the felt) all handily located in one, air conditioned space on Lockhart Road.
Anyone with kids knows the hassle of coming up with enough activities to keep little ones entertained inside on a rainy day. In hong kong you also have the joy of ‘high pollution level’ days, or ‘extreme heat’ days where you also need to keep little monsters from tearing your apartment apart. If you don’t mind a bit of messy play, then fret no more. Artland has you covered. I left draining under a load of paint, kids brushes and sponges, stencils and finger paint — oooo gold and blue glitter (seemed like a good idea at the time).
Back to the felt.
Before my little one was mobile, I used to make a fair few of her toys. One such project required felt. So, off I duly went to Sham Shui Po (aka crafting Mecca), long story short, I ended up traipsing around a vast area, walking in circles and finally ended up buying felt –by the metre, when all I really needed were the practical little squares I now saw stacked neatly on the shelf at Artland. I almost cried.

My first time at Artland was when back in high school, our art teacher took us on a little trip and brought us there, telling us that this was a great place for us to get our supplies and pointing out which are the best brands. The place sold every single art supply one could possibly imagine; you would be hard-​pressed to find something that they didn’t stock. We oohed and aahed while complaining about the sky-​high prices — a box of paint for $ 200+? Looks like Art wasn’t the cheapest elective around!
Since then, I’ve made multiple trips to Artland. This place really does have it all — paintbrushes, calligraphy tools, canvases — even not-​so-​traditional supplies like those Crayola color wonder markers that are invisible on all surfaces except their special paper. Mostly, I bought paintbrushes, individual tubes of paint and charcoal here. I would spend much longer here than I had to really just picking from their huge varieties and wondering which shade of yellow to get — should I go with Burnt Sienna or Yellow Ochre? Speaking of which, I used to have a lot of fun looking at the names of the different shades and taking a stab at naming them myself!
Artland is a one stop shop for any artist and if you are one and haven’t been, you’re really missing out! Artland is pretty expensive though, but I’ve learnt through my two years of my Art elective that art supplies don’t come cheap. I’ve been able to get a 10% discount my mentioning my school’s name though, so that helps a little. Artland is quite easy to find; it’s right by Tonnochy Road and is close to the basketball court behind CC Wu building.

I have literally been shopping at Art Land for 20 years (with my mama to start with!) and still find it impossible to leave without a full bag of crafty goodies.
Artland stock an abundance of everything from the best quality art papers to Crayola crayons — I have walked out of this store with all sorts… glue guns, foam boards, quilting frames, neon spray paint, molding clay and paint rollers… this is definitely the daddy of art stores in Hong Kong. Their pen collection is also fantastic if you’re always on the look out for the perfect ball point.
I most recently bought myself a brand new set of water colours but couldn’t resist a solid graphite pencil, a brand new putty eraser, a fresh box of oil pastels and some sticks of charcoal. Like I said, it’s all here!
Artland also have a notice board advertising painting courses and so forth for those that need a little guidance with their creativity. That guidance may also get you a 10% discount if you quote your teacher’s name. Just sayin’.
