Mother Court

This was the first ‘baby’ store I discovered in Hong Kong when I learned I was pregnant. In case you haven’t noticed by now, Hong Kong is a great city for shops — if you know where they are! The traditional ‘shop front’ we are used to coming from places like Australia, the UK, Canada or the USA only gets you so far. There are many, many, many more shops located above street level than on it, and most are in buildings that you would assume to be office blocks on first glance.
Melbourne Plaza is a little different, you can actually tell it’s a shopping mall on your way past, but I still found out about Mother Court from a fairly unlikely source (or so I though at the time), a poster on a newspaper kiosk further down Queen’s Road. The fortuitous nature of this discovery I have only learned in the months since when many new mums of my acquaintance are still completely unaware of its very existence.
In terms of ‘baby’ shops, Mother Court is a little different from the pack. It does what it says on the tin, focuses on mum and has the biggest range of maternity clothes of any of the five or so baby shops I frequent in Central. For this reason, you probably won’t use it much post-​partum.
They do have a modest range of baby clothes, and stock things like bottles and carriers, but I suspect this is more to target the ‘I must prepare’ nesting urge of mothers-​to-​be rather than catering for the fully-​fledged members of the fraternity.
I got my stroller from Mother Court. I must admit, my research was minimal — I wanted the tallest one I could find and fell in love with the Stokke Xplory in their window very early on in the process. You have to order a little in advance, as stock isn’t exactly on hand, but the service was excellent. I returned to get the car seat and carry cot attachments a few weeks later.
The store stocks a fairly extensive range of Stokke nursery furniture and is unabashed in their ‘designer’ focus, so expect a slightly heftier price tag than at some other stores. Like many of its competitors, Mother Court operates a member club (with discounts) and you qualify after spending a certain amount — so hang onto those receipts.
