I really enjoyed my dim sum brunch that started off a whole day of shopping with Liz. The food is served from trolleys that are pushed around by the food ladies. Each lady has differing levels of English(0 to about a 2 out of 10 in fluency standards) and differing level of friendliness. Some will smile and laugh at your terrible Cantonese while others will stare at you steel faced as they show you what’s under the bamboo lids. The also have a centre part which serves up a variety of steamed goodies such as cha siu bao, lo ba go, veges, and the delicious egg custard buns. Although make sure you take your ‘stamp card’ with you so they can mark down what you have had. This is how they tally your bill at the end and you don’t get any food without a stamp! The food itself is your bog standard dim sum, nothing really stands out as exceptional so it is a safe bet. The place can also host a large group of people as the tables seemed to go on for miles!

I love Metropole for its ambience. The food comes round on trolleys pushed by a medley of friendly to unfriendly ladies who shout at your in Cantonese or just show you their wares. The Dimsum itself isn’t spectacular, but it isn’t horrid. It’s a safe bet. The meats are all fresh, but they have to work on their skins. For instance the Cheung Fung and Hargow skins are a little thick and floury for my liking — but hell, it’s Dimsum. I’ll eat it. There’s also a central island where you can pick up freshly fried treats(Lo Bak Ko, veggies), steamed dumplings and buns, stewed items and desserts. As a side note, the central island opens at 11:30 am whereas the restaurant opens earlier. This is a great place for big groups(I’ve been with 14 people before) as you can book a table as the hall is huge for Hong Kong. Plus, you have the added benefit of sampling ALL the dishes.

Metropol serves traditional dim sum in a rather spacious dining hall, that is picked up from trolleys which circulate around the entire floor. The good thing is you’re able to immediately fill your table with food after you sat down, but it also means the variety of dim sum to pick from is limited compared to ordering with«dim sum order forms» because each trolley can only carry 5 – 6 types of dim sum at most. There’s nothing creative or new about the food, just the typical stuff cooked in the most typical way — char siu buns, chicken feet, dumplings etc. But it is a comfortable place for family gatherings and even casual business meet ups.

So it seems like dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong fall into one of two categories: 1: You order from a dim sum menu, check off what you want, hand it to the staff and they bring it out from the kitchen OR 2: You sit down and assign a designated gopher amongst your lunch group to run around with your ticket and grab what you can find from the carts roaming around the restaurant floor(no decorum here on waiting patiently for the cart to come to your table… you have to hustle to get the goods or otherwise you would get nothing to eat!) Metropol falls under category 2 and not really a good example of category 2 either. We showed up about 1:30PM on a Sunday and although the room was 70% full, it seemd like they were shutting down or changing shifts, for the options on the carts were limited. My poor husband is the gopher in my marriage to do the running around to the carts to find stuff and the pickins were slim. Granted it might have been a bit of timing too as to when we arrived, but of what we did eat, we thought it was so so. The best part of our meal was the fried rice of shrimp and egg we ordered special off the menu.

I came here with some friends for a dim sum lunch whilst visiting Hong Kong based on a recommendation from our hostess. Pork was definitely the star of the show for me! I loved the pork with mustard and chili sauce, pork bun and pork sandwich made on the pineapple bread. The shrimp dumplings were very good as well! The ambiance here is interesting given that it felt a bit like a church potluck hall, but I could tell that it was mostly locals here so am not surprised that the food was delicious!

Have been coming here for 20+ years. Metropaol is part of the Japanese Heichinrou resturant group & they do a good job. Heichinrou is high end & Metropol is middle class. Large resturant so you can still get a table at noon on a Sunday. Can’t do that at City Hall. They have daipaidong setup in the middle of the floor where you can get 牛肚 & 豬紅. I’m a regular.
