Kowloon Park

Kowloon Park is a wonderful oasis in Kowloon, it’s a perfect place if you need a bit of fresh air and the crowded streets have been too much…
There are many wonderful things to do here for families, but I recommend grabbing an ice-​cream and sitting back and do a bit of people watching while you rest your tired legs after a busy morning of shopping and playing tourist.
Another bonus of Kowloon Park is that it’s free and offers some wonderful areas to explore!

Kowloon Park is a nice and relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Smaller ‘parks’ within Kowloon Park are the aviary section, the sculpture park, a maze garden… just to name a few. There are several water ponds with natural inhabitants (eg turtles, koi, ducks, cranes) that are fun to admire.
Running parallel to Nathan Road, where several shopping malls are located, Kowloon Park provides a nice break from shopping. There are plenty of trees that provide sufficient shade so you’re not directly under the sweltering heat. Definitely worth an hour or two’s visit if you’re in Tsim Sha Tsui.

If you like birds, come here! I came here with my parents during my last visit to Hong Kong a few weeks ago. Nestled in the heart of Tsim Tsa Tsui/​Kowloon, Kowloon Park offers many great paths for strolling along — whether you are a single person, a couple, friends, or a family! Many trees surround you as you enter the park, making this place a welcoming environment to escape the afternoon heat. There is a pond with hundreds of pink flamingos (who ever said flamingos were only in Florida?), as well as an area with caged tropical birds, such as parrots, nearby the «flamingo pond».
Of note, there is no fee to enter the park as it is a public park. There are various entrances into the park, but the main ones are on Nathan Road (I took the entrance right by the Luk Fuk Jewelry shop).
Kowloon Park definitely is worth visit if you’re in the Tsim Sha Tsui area as it’s near the clock tower, space and art museums, and by the waterfront promenade with excellent views of HK island. Come check out a glimpse of the more natural «jungle» (it’s not just concrete!) that is Hong Kong.

So much beauty all throughout this park, definitely a must see if you’re around! I’ve been to Hong Kong many times but this was my first at this park. The greenery is beautiful, they have a turtle pond and different exotic birds. Kid and family friendly.

Tranquility. Birds chirping. Fresh air. Beautiful plant life … benches to sit down, close your eyes and decompress.
Kowloon Park is a special place — and most visitors to the park are there for the same reason — peace, quiet, tranquility. Take a book, sunhat, bottle of water, sit on one of the many benches available and enjoy. Butch D. describes this as an oasis in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. I totally agree.

Very well manicured park with a fish pond in the middle of it. Reminds me a little bit of a miniaturized version of New York City’s Central Park. It’s a nice respite from trekking around a foreign city all day.

I have decided write about Kowloon Park because my office window can look over this park and I stare at it 10 hours a day in most of my work days.
Located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Park is the «Central Park» of Kowloon. Kowloon Park is one of the biggest public parks in Hong Kong, with 13.3 hectares (33 acres) in size. Kowloon Park is a short walk from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station. Exit A will lead you to the edge of the park. It’s west of Nathan road, East of Canton Road, South of Austin Road, and North of Hai Phong Road. There are multiple entrances to the park at your convenience.
Home to the Kowloon mosque, some superb greenery, birds and an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. Kowloon Park is visited by many tourists because of its beautiful scenic, wide range of flowers, birds, and trees, and historical buildings. This is also a local hot spot for morning joggers, swimmers, dog walkers, Tai Chi workout, and ‘public square dance’.
Many of you may not know this fun fact. Kowloon Park was officially opened in 1970, so it’s been around for 44 years. The park was formerly the site of the Whitfield Barracks of the British Army, with a former battery (Kowloon West II Battery) in the northwestern part of the Park.
This is not just a public park with greenery and fountain. It consists of many functions and facilities including Maze Garden, Garden of Life, Chinese Garden (features lotus ponds and rocks waterfalls), Roof Garden, Color Garden, Banyan Court, Bird Lake, Aviary, Mini Soccer Pitch, Fitness Trail, Children’s Playground, Discovery Playground, Avenue of Comic Stars, Large swimming pools and a sports center.

Kowloon Park is particularly special to me as it brings back a lot of childhood memories. My parents used to take me here to play on the weekend and I now take my children to play here many years later. The newly renovated children’s playground remains one of the busiest playground in Kowloon on weekends.
Avenue of Comic Stars
You have probably been to the Avenue of Stars along the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui. Did you know there is a Avenue of Comic Stars? The Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars was opened in 2012. It features 24 figurines of local comic characters and 10 bronze handprints of local comic artists along a 100 meterpath. The local comic characters including Old Master Q, Cowboy, Wang Xiao Hu, Guo Jing, McDull, etc.
Bird Lake and the Aviary
If you walk into the park from Canton Road by China Hong Kong City overpass. You will quickly notice the flamingo lake. There are over 200 different wild bird species can be found in the Park. The Conservation Corner, Color Garden, Chinese Garden, Bird Lake and Fitness Trail are ideal spots for wild bird watching
Indoor and Outdoor Swimming Pool
It may not look like a Olympics Stadium, but this pool hosted the 2009 East Asian Games. It includes four indoor heated pools, including an Olympic sized 50-​meter main pool, two 25-​meter training pools, and a 20-​meter diving pool. Outdoors swimming pools are great for kids. There are leisure pools of irregular shapes linked together by waterfalls, a circular paddling pool, and sunbathing areas.
Hong Kong Heritage and Discovery Centre
One preserved historic barrack, Block S58, is used as a godown of Hong Kong Museum of History. Three other preserved buildings of the former barracks are used as museums. There are a pair of identical two storied colonial military barrack blocks. The roofs are pitched with Chinese tiles with tar finish. They housed the former Hong Kong Museum of History from 1983 to 1998 before the completion of the present Hong Kong Museum of History at Chatham Road South. An extension block linking the two historical barracks was constructed in the 1980s to provide more space for the museum facilities. It now houses the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre.
The Piazza at the center of the park hosts regular events and live performances, including Chinese festival related programmes.
For those planning to visit the park, the park is free of entry.

Kowloon Park has a very special place in my heart. I have a lot of fond memories as a kid coming with my parents and/​or grandma. We used to live across the street so they’d always take me here. I would always love coming to the swimming pool and then eating nearby afterwards. In my recent trip back to HK, I made it a priority to come back to my old stomping grounds. After all these years, not much has changed. There are flamingos in various parts of the park, and there is an area where you can do some bird watching. Lots of great photo opportunities here with nature. If you’re a tourist, I strongly recommend NOT to come here on Sundays. It gets somewhat packed (but it’s still a very big and spacious park) and there are barely any benches to sit and enjoy the sights and environment around you at this park.

Ah yes, the green oasis in the heart of Kowloon. Many a tourist have been here and a lot of Southeast Asian people frequent this park, possibly due to its proximity with Chungking Mansions. But did you know that Kowloon Park has been around for 44 years? It wasn’t until 1989 that the park is what we know today — a bustling 13 hectare with an aviary and a bird lake, and generally, a great place to relax and bond with nature after shopping at the nearby Canton Road.
There are 11 ways to get to the park in all four directions: from Austin Road (the main entrance), Canton Road, Haiphong Road, and Nathan Road. In the morning, as with all parks, you will see a lot of elderly practicing their tai chi or joggers doing their laps around the park. At lunch time, a lot of workers nearby either bring their packed lunch here or order take-​out and sit in one of the hundred benches scattered across the park.
I, for one, prefer to visit the park during the late afternoons until the early evening, with the cool evening breeze sweeping across the park. During the winters, I frequent the park because of the indoor swimming pool as all other swimming pools (the outdoor ones) are closed for maintenance. When I was young, I frequented this park a lot and was intrigued by the flamingos in the bird lake.
Kowloon Park has a plethora of outdoor areas such as a children’s playground, a maze garden, the spacious sculpture garden, and a rose-​riddled garden. The viewing cone is the highest point in the park and offers a terrific view of the entire park.
