Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin

I stayed here 9 out of 11 nights during a work trip (the other two nights were spent in Shanghai), and enjoyed my stay very much.
The only negative thing I can think of is I could have used more drawer space (though I definitely overpacked…).
A cool perk was the availability of phones for you to borrow each day (they are located in each room). I did not purchase an international data plan for my travels, and the mobile phone provided by the hotel was very useful as I wandered during my free time, (because I don’t know how to explore without Google Maps…). I never used the provided phone to make calls, but I believe that is an available feature.
I enjoyed the room I stayed in for the first half of the trip better than the one I stayed in for the latter half of the trip. The layout of the bathroom was better, with the shower adjacent to the bathtub. I enjoyed the openess of the layout, where I could see the rest of the room (and TV) from the shower.
The buffet breakfast is very good, and my breakfast consisted of a rotation of noodles, cereal, pancakes (with peanut butter!), fruit, and pastries. (Egg dishes were chosen frequently by my colleagues, but I don’t eat eggs very much).
Though I have no complaints about staying here for work, if I was ever on a leisure trip to Hong Kong, I’d imagine I’d try to stay a little closer to HK Island. This hotel’s proximity to the MTR location is very convenient, but I had to make quite a bit of transfers as I wandered during my time off.

This is my Hong Kong home away from home. I like to stay here because it is conveniently located right next to the MTR, and only few stops away from the Chinese border. The room rates are significantly cheaper than staying on HK island or other parts of HK. If I need to get to HK island, the MTR will get me there in less than 45 mins.
Every room has beautiful views and everything you need, including an extra large bathroom and several toiletries. The breakfast buffet is super delicious, which includes an array of pastries, eggs (any style), cheese, dried and fresh fruit, fresh squeezed juices, etc.
My only complaint is the gym. The cardio machines are touch screens and several of them do not work properly. The Hyatt needs to update their gym and then I would give them 5 stars.

We enjoyed our stay here quite a bit.
As you’d expect from a Hyatt, the rooms were clean and modern. There were no creepy dustbunnies or anything of that nature. The only gripe was that the shower drained very slowly, but that’s a minor thing. Our room on the 7^th floor had a very nice view of the surroundings. The wifi-​fi was a little slow, but not overly so.
The service was excellent. My 6-​year old daughter caught her finger on the front revolving door, and the staff were very helpful in getting us an ambulance (thankfully, my daughter was OK). Overall, they were very accommodating with a variety of things, ranging from an early check in to a late check out.
The all-​you-​can-​eat breakfast is pricey (about $ 230 HK), but has an eclectic assortment, inclusive of noodles, congee, dim sum, Asian and Western pastries, fruit, and other things. If you wanted to save a little, you can go outside of the hotel and buy patries and such from a couple of small restaurants attached to the MTR station.
Overall, we had no complaints and would stay here again.

this review is solely based on their Chinese restaurant Shatin 18 and has nothing to do with the rest of the hotel facilities/​functions.
so after hearing so many good things abt this place esp their Beijing duck I finally tried lunching with my parents on a normal Sunday, ie. not a special festive day. we were asked to choose a tea so we did, and after 5mins another staff came over to ask the same thing so I told her we already ordered tea. she came back to request me to tell her my order again since its obviously hv not been recorded previously. ok no big deal.
so we went on n ordered 5 dim sum and 1 dessert. 3 came nearly at the same time so I had to tell them to pause. the spring roll presentation is terrible. see it yourself in my photo — it’s so crispy that the crisps are everywhere on the plate? taste is standard. wat can possibly go wrong with spring roll right?
we were then presented the biggest portion of pork rice roll [cha siu cheung fun] I hv ever seen in a hotel Chinese restaurant. holy ma ma it’s huge! yes there are plenty of pork in it too. wat I always say is: quality over quantity n this dish is totally against my motto!
next up is the crab roe dumplings. ok the taste is good. I like it because of wat it is. I’m a big fan of crab roe anything lol! the presentation again, please, just look at it, how on earth can u screw up placing 6pcs of xiao long bao the way they did? not trying to compare with xiao long bao giant ding tai fung, but the wrap is too thick as well. the one thing I like about it is the fact that they hv put ginger inside the dumpling so the taste is further enhanced!
steamed shrimp dumpling is nice! the shrimp is of a very high quality n together with the veg mixed in it gives it a fresh flavour n crunchy texture!
steamed beef ball is again not bad at all! tho I still think the portion of each piece can be slightly adjusted. I know most people want bigger portion bc it might seem to be a better deal. however, with a smaller portion guests will be able to try more variety of dishes, dim sum is meant for sharing after all!
the dessert was lovely! a brilliant idea to place a red date on top of the crystal fried bun which has sticky purple rice in it. chewing texture and flavourful dessert! well done!
now to the real reason it didn’t get more stars than it should is because they don’t have that hospitality spirit towards their customers n allow me to emphasise this again: this review is based purely on my experience in shatin 18 and not the hotel as a whole. hospitality n service are different in terms of the extra miles ur employees go in the same environment. service is simply taking the order n delivering the dishes on tables after tables n it’s robotic. hospitality is wat guests expect in a 5 star hotel for obvious reasons. for instance, having to ask for tea refill everytime it runs out is unacceptable, didn’t exaggerate, just stating facts. other examples of the lack/​failure of hospitality have been mentioned earlier in the review so i don’t plan to be long winded. from my 2 hr observation, I don’t see much interaction of supervisors/​managers/​staff with guests and it is very distracting for me to keep hearing guests’ requests simply because they haven’t been taken care of. to make it clear of what these requests are, here’s an example, the large group sitting behind me were asking for the bill more than once and in the end two younger customers of that table stayed behind just to wait for the bill to finally come.
whoever knows me well knows that I’m never the demanding type. I don’t need to be served like a king, but needing to ask for this n that all the time is in fact tiring. so I’m gonna talk about what’s good about this place now. they have 3 live cooking counter n don’t worry they hv very systematic ventilation to avoid having guests smell like roasted porks when they walk out lol. most of the dim sums are made to order so I can definitely relate to the heavier workload the chefs are getting and I understand the kitchen is definitely one of the most stressful places to work in, so I believe the food that I complained about earlier will get better/​improve easily! I also like that two thirds of the place enables guests to see the outside through the ceiling to floor window, making the restaurant look spacious at the same time allowing sufficient sunlight in for a cheerful dining environment.
my humble opinion? please smile and talk to your guests! don’t leave your beautiful smiles at home! look for tea refills at all times as well! shatin 18 is a Chinese restaurant after all!

This hotel is actually known for being a favourite location for holding weddings– from picking up the bride to the actual ceremony; this place has it all sorted. The Hyatt Shatin is actually situated two stations away at University, location wise this place is in the middle of nowhere unless you were heading to the Chinese University which is right on your doorstep.
The hotel itself is a fully fledged affair with restaurants, gym, pool, outdoor function areas (where people can hold wedding ceremonies which is quite rare in Hong Kong) and all the other niceties that you would expect from a hotel. The buffet offered here is renowned for good value and the waiting list had been at one point in time to be months.
The rooms are well appointed and being a new hotel everything is clean and on friend’s stay there was little to complain about. The only thing is that it is in the middle of nowhere so you have to take connecting transport wherever you are wishing to go. This is a popular hotel with mainland tourists as it has good connection to mainland China via East Rail.

My friend was on a ‘staycation’ with her family at the Hyatt Regency in Sha Tin, and she invited me and a few other friends to go over. I live in Sha Tin and thought that it would be close by, but it actually isn’t at all! I had to take the train to the university station and walk a bit. I used an online taxi fare calculator, and apparently a taxi ride there would cost close to $ 80!
If you intend to go around HK and hit up all the tourist spots and do some shopping, this probably isn’t the hotel for you. It’s just too far out, and it would make more sense to choose a hotel closer to the city. That being said, that the hotel is far away does give you a rare sense of seclusion that you wouldn’t get staying at a hotel in the middle of Central or TST.
As a five star hotel, it goes without saying that the rooms are nice and facilities and service are top notch. My friend’s room was indeed quite grand — it wasn’t huge, but it was roomy enough and was certainly luxurious. However, I noticed upon arrival that the hotel was really popular with those coming from the mainland. Everywhere I turned, there was Mandarin! I guess it makes sense as the hotel is located towards the further end of the east rail line, close to the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Stations.
I would say that the hotel is quite family friendly — I didn’t go to the pool, but my friend told me that there were free floats available for kids. She told me that the pool is quite shallow, and pretty much anyone will be able to stand in it.
Overall, the only drawback of the Hyatt Regency is its location. Ma Liu Shan isn’t the most convenient of places and travelling will take up quite a lot of your time. Other than that, this is pretty much your typical five star hotel!
