Place rating: 4 Hong Kong
Hotpot in Hong Kong is a bit of a phenomena; who would have thought that boiling food on a hot stove would become a local favourite for sweltering Hong Kong? After all, we have hot and humid weather which must be the worst weather to be enjoying something as hot and as willing. But nowadays, on any given day, you will see people happily boiling their piece of beef in 30c weather. Well, for the sake of completeness, the aircon helps. The fact that hotpot restaurants can be open for 4 seasons is a testament to the importance of aircons being used in these restaurants. What used to be a way for people to keep warm during the winter months has now become a delicacy that could be enjoyed all year round. Hop Hing is a very traditional place– it hasn’t got any of the fancy decoration of the newer places and it certainly hasn’t got the privacy that others offer. What it offers though, is the simplicity of good food and simple soups bases. Here you won’t find some super fusion cuisine soup base with 10 ingredients; it is the traditional soup bases which continue to be served. The beef here is simply beyond words– its not cheap from 200– 300 for one plate but trust me you will think its worth it. There aren’t a lot of hotpot«ingredients» to choose from but the mainstream nature of it should keep most people happy. The only annoying thing with this place is that there are some over zealous waiters and they seem to interfere with everything you do with your food. Not good. Looking beyond that though, its still ok if you want some traditional ingredients and soup bases. It isn’t cheap though, it really ain’t.
