I first discovered Hong Kong Cuisine(1983) a few years ago when I took a summer job in Happy Valley. I was walking towards the bus stop when I was handed a flier advertising a new Chinese restaurant, and attached was a specials menu too. The restaurant looked quite fancy from the flier, but the prices on the menu were surprisingly cheaper than I expected, especially because Happy Valley is a high-income neighborhood and restaurants are known to be expensive. I decided to try the restaurant out with my mother and we went some time the following week. Even though we were both pretty familiar with the neighborhood as we used to live there, we had a hard time finding the restaurant. It was on the first floor but the sign outside it wasn’t very obvious at all. We finally found it and had to walk up a flight of stairs — the whole place looked extremely new and fancy. I was pretty impressed with the fact that menus were given out in the form of iPads — the menus were available in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese and there were colorful pictures accompanying every item on the menu. This just kind of made me want to order everything on the menu! Besides what was on the iPad, they were doing special 2-person set offers and we decided to settle with that. The set included a few kinds of dimsum, a plate of seasonal vegetables, fried rice, and dessert. The food was scrumptious and though portions were not huge, I was left full and satisfied. To me, the highlight of my meals whenever we order the set is usually the dessert — I don’t remember the exact names, but one of them was a green tea and mango mochi and the other was a chewy ball of dough with red bean paste. The mochi was a surprisingly good blend of the two flavors and I’d never tasted anything like it. Another time, the desserts were two types of osmanthus jellies and that was great too. My mother and I have been back many times since our first time that summer. Back then, I remember the restaurant was pretty empty and there were only a few other tables along with us, but recently I’ve noticed that the restaurant is more and more full, so I’m very happy for them — at good food for a reasonable price, they deserve to be slowly but surely gaining attention!
