After 3 weeks in S China, fighting in broken Mandarin about what is and what isn’t ‘meat’, I was ready for anything. I decided to try this place and wasn’t disappointed. The place is a little hard to find, when you find the address, you need to buzz into what looks like it will be an apartment. There really is a restaurant in there. It’s decorations aren’t in the best condition, but everything seemed clean. The food was fantastic. I ordered the South Indian Thali. It was about 100HKD, and I left feeling stuffed, without finishing it all. The staff was friendly, though I was the only person in the restaurant for about a half hour, and they sort of hovered around me. I had arrived at 6pm when they opened, so I would suggest going after 630 if that makes you uncomfortable. Would recommend, would go again.

I’ve been on an Indian restaurant exploration lately as Branto’s was my third one in the last six weeks. A friend suggested coming here which is a vegetarian Indian restaurant and I thought why not… it’s Monday and let’s do Green Monday! The good news was that there’s no wait on a Monday night at 8pm. Upon entering the restaurant, you would find this seems like it’s a truly authentic one as the place was packed with Indians. Excuse my lack of knowledge on Indian cuisine, we ordered too many dishes and when everything was on the table, we just had no idea what each dish was. Some of the recommended dishes were the thali(like a combo that comes with rice) and the Mysore masala dosa. For most of the time, I just had no idea what I was eating. The dishes mainly consisted of some beans and some tofu kind of stuff. There was also a spicy rice that was quite yummy. For drinks, I highly recommend the mango lassi. I order mango lassi every time I dine at an indian restaurant and I must say Branto’s was one of the best I’ve had… not too sour as I don’t like it with a strong yogurt taste. Overall, I’d recommend this place if you are a vegetarian. For Indian cuisine, I still like it with meat like lamb or chicken.

What I love about Branto’s, is that it is safe, a safe place to bring Mrs L, as the entire venue is vegetarian, vegan and Jain. On top of that, they make some mighty tasty Indian food — yummers! For me, this place is all about the dosas, and the thalis. For the uninitiated, the dosa is a very thin pancake, about the size of a car tire, that’s rolled into a 3 inch diameter pipe. The inside is then filled(if you want) with a couple of spoons of potato, or tomato, etc. These are so yummy, and Branto is definitely up there with the best of them. The thalis are trays, with a bit of everything. There are about 10 individual dishes, all no bigger than a tennis ball, with a variety of flavours and textures. All of this is served with some breads and rice. Again, Branto is a must for these thalis. Other particular favourites of mine include; puri, chana massala, and malai kofta. So, we have established that the food is good, and the queues outside would confirm that, so make sure you book at busy times. To be fair, if you are only two or three, the wait is usually pretty quick. I think that’s because the inside is hot busy and cramped, so folks don’t tend to stick around for too long. So, to the venue, see above! It’s a tiny first floor restaurant, that is crammed full of tables. You can barely swing a cat, probably useful for a vegetarian restaurant. If you do come, try and get one of the two tables«behind» the entrance, if you u-turn left as soon as you walk in, there are a couple of good tables tucked away there. As for service, unfortunately thumbs down from me. Too many customers, only one or two staff on, who tend to favour the Indian clientele. You’ll have to shout, holler and do the fandango to get attention, but keep on top of the staff and all should be good. It is worth it for the food.
