Place rating: 3 Hong Kong
Not that there aren’t any other BBQ sites in Hong Kong but I guess this one could be considered to be one with a twist. Situated on the seaside on Ting Kok road is a compound with a carpark on one side and a village side on the other– this is where all the BBQ happens. Its a pay first then all you can eat barbeque and as opposed to normal BBQ sites where you have to pay for BBQ«Packs» of steak, sausages etc– they have here everything on a stick ready for you. The special fact is that they have a huge range of food items and you can even pay more to have a pot placed on the coal fire(the stove is like a rectangular box that sits on the table); they way you can even cook other seafood items in brine/beer too. As I have mentioned, these is nothing really, really special about this place but it is just the entire experience which makes it better than other places. There is always plenty of food(the staff work really hard to replace any depleted items, sometimes there is a bit of a queue) and the food items they offer aren’t the general sorts too. You pay just once for food(though drinks are another matter) which makes the experience a lot more convenient. the stove itself is another attraction as it is a coal stove but its a small one that sits on a table, meaning that you don’t all have to huddle around a BBQ oven and leave some people out on the table; just makes for a better atmosphere. Of course there are the bad parts: its tricky to get there if you don’t drive, I would call the place plush(its a BBQ site what do you expect) and on a busy day the smoke could get so overwhelming that by the time you leave you do get asphyxiated and turned into a smoked salmon yourself from the smoke coming from all the stoves. Seating is a bit random as they have constantly added tables so some are proper tables whilst some further out are add ons. As I said, you can’t expect too much.
