Schloss Sanssouci

The castle gardens and surrounding area are beautiful and worth a visit. However, I found the tour of the castle overpriced and underwhelming.
You are only able to visit the castle with a tour guide. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and guides you through approx 6 rooms. Pictures are not allowed unless you purchase a license at the ticket counter (the only other place I’ve encountered something this silly was in Russia, so I presume that this rule must be left over from DDR times).
The guide spent most of her time talking about the renovations of the castle and, only briefly, addressed the history of its past residents. I would have loved to hear more about the castle’s actual history instead of who restored one of the hundreds of porcelain flowers on a chandelier.
My suggestion is that you spent more time exploring the beautiful city of Potsdam and the surrounding gardens of Sanssouci rather than going on a castle tour.

Ein Spaziergang durch die riesige Parkallee ist im Herbst mit das Beste was Potsdam zu bieten hat. Neben dem Schloss vom «Alten Fritz». Auch wenn das Wetter mal nicht so mit–
spielt, spazieren, schlendern und anschließend etwas heißes trinken. So muss es sein.

Das Schloß Sanssouci mit seinem Park ist eine der interessantesten und schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Deutschland. Es ist eine Reise wert.

The gardens are quite pleasant. There is a part that is very much laid out and clean but the main parts of the garden are actually wilder and more fun to explore. (Although it is forbidden to lay on the lawns…) Make sure you have at least an hour to visit the gardens as it is worth spending time there.
Unfortunately, not so much can be said about the castle which is tiny and rather uninteresting. It is very much disappointing to wait 4 hours to visit a 5-​rooms castle with no other guide and explanations than the poor comments of the audioguide.
All in all, a very disappointing visit. Moreover, the staff at the ticket shop was slightly rude. As you may have guessed already, I do not recommend this place. There are so many amazing things to do in Berlin!

(Take the S7 S-​bahn from Berlin — we took it from hackescher markt, and then took the 695 from Potadam station) Gorgeous place. Get the pass + which lets you in all the attractions. The first day we only went to Palace Sanssouci– then we realized how much else there was (and we missed the kitchen and ladies’ wing) — so we went back. In one day we managed to see Sanssouci (you will get an appointment viewing– plan the other things you see around that). We had a 3pm «date» with Sanssouci, so we went to the Orangerie and the New Palace– we miscalculated on the buses (get a schedule!!!) so we spent an hour at a bus stop (wasted time :-(After the bus finally came we got to Sanssouci just in time, saw the palace, the kitchen, the ladies’ wing, and the Bilder Gallery (wonderful art), and had time to see some of the gardens. I loved the audio tour. I did NOT pay extra to take pictures– it’s dark in the palaces (to protect the art) so I bought the DVD and a book of the palace. I really enjoyed learning about Frederick the Great– such an interesting and multitalented man. His palace reflects his wide ranging intellect– and I love that he loved Rococo so much he kept on liking it even when the style police had moved on to Neo Classicism. You GO Frederick. The guards are stern– they have to be. They are protecting priceless art that you are allowed to get very very close to. It’s obscene that people think they can lean on ancient furniture when the signs clearly tell you not to. PAY ATTENTION to the signs, and the frowns of the museum guards– and if you want to take pictures, pay the 3 euros to do so (and EACH person taking pictures pays– there’s not family deal for pictures). If you like history, and beauty, and quirky aestheticism, all the palaces and places here are for you. I have never been anywhere better. I have been to equally good places, but really, for what it is, there is nowhere better than this. See the pictures on the net– come prepared. You’ll get more out of the place. My Berlin top 10– Deutsches Historisches Museum, Reichstag TOUR (free, book in advance, and eat in the restaurant), TV tower (eat there), Potsdam (see as much as you can on the Plus ticket for Sanssouci), Gemaldegallerie, Bode museum, Pergamon museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Instrument Museum, Neues Museum.

Ein netter Ausflug von Berlin aus, dachten wir.
Bei Ankunft wollten wir uns gleich am Eingang Tickets für die Schlossbesichtigung kaufen, dort gab es leider nur Kombitickets, die wir nicht wollten. Also liefen wir durch den riesigen, schön gelegenen Garten und mussten erfahren, dass inzwischen die Wartezeit nicht mehr eine halbe Stunde, sondern zwei Stunden betrug. Das war uns dann zu lang.
Die Preise sind auf den ersten Blick gar nicht mal allzu hoch, jedoch kostet alles extra. Toilette 70 Cents, Fotografieren im Schloss zusätzlich zum Eintritt pro Kamera 3,00 Euro extra.
Leider haben wir die Räumlichkeiten nicht gesehen, wurden aber kulinarisch entschädigt. Wir entdeckten ein tolles Fischrestaurant «Butt». Nicht billig, aber preiswert für das was geboten wird (isb)

Wer mal raus will und die Natur genießen möchte ist in Potsdam genau richtig!!!
es gibt viel zu sehen gibt in den ganzen Museen!
Man kann aber auch in den tollen Cafes was trinken o. Snacken!! Zeit sollte man schon haben wenn man sich dort aufhalten möchte!
Im Frühling o. Sommer ist es am schönsten, da dort alles so schön Blüt!

Worth the trip out of Berlin. You need to take the tour to see inside. They give you these slippers for your shoes that are hard to walk in. Tour took longer than it should but very detailed. The grounds are wonderful. It is a bit of walk between the difference buildings on the estate. It will take you a while to get to places. The windmill is the best part. They do have a bus that goes to the palace from the train station.

Sehr schön und unglaublich imposant. Das Gelände ist sehr groß. (Park-​Karte:
) Ich empfehle eindeutig ein Fahrrad, Zeit und eine Kamera. Wer zudem noch etwas Geld aufbringen kann, der kann sich unter anderem in der Mühle amüsieren und sehr leckeres Bio-​Brot kaufen. (Ich habe noch nie so schnell ein Brot vernichtet!)
Es befinden sich 6 Bushaltestellen in der Nähe, viele Parkplätze und eine S-​Bahn ist auch nicht wirklich fern.
Für die älteren unter uns besitzt der Park eine Shuttle-​Service, der die Damen und Herren zu einem vorgegebenen Standort bringt.
Im Südosten gibt es ein mehrsprachiges kostenloses Einführungskino. Dies kann ich ebenfalls empfehlen.
Leider konnte ich mir noch nicht alles angucken, da ich meine Tipps selbst nicht befolgt habe, welche ich zu Beginn erwähnte. Es war mein erster Besuch.

The grounds of the palace are amazing. The park is beautiful, expansive, and peaceful — but I’m not reviewing the park. I’m reviewing the palace & its paid tour.
We were hugely let down by the palace. You pay way too much money for a very brief tour where you can’t even take pictures. The majority of the palace is not accessible to the public, and some parts (such as the kitchen) they charge you even more to see. For the basic entry fee, you see the entry way, library, receiving room, and a few guest bedrooms. That’s it. Not worth it.
Do yourself a favor. Go to the park in Potsdam on a day with nice weather. Walk around the park, see all of the parks from the outside. Relax, enjoy your day. Don’t pay for the palace tour. It just isn’t worth it.

I wasn’t actually able to go inside the building but I did spend some time wandering around the grounds. Maybe we went at the wrong time of year (June) but there weren’t that many flowers in bloom and the grounds and the palace were a bit underwhelming after Versailles. The exterior of the building appeared to need a lot of repair. The statues were very damaged and the exterior was just a bit dirty and dingy. Our tour guide didn’t give us much information aside from a quick description about the grave with the potatoes and the 11 dogs and the large windmill nearby.
I think this is a site that might be very enjoyable to visit if you go at the right time of year, with a good guide and actually go inside. But from my perspective, if you’re thinking about just stopping by to look around quickly you’re not going to get a lot out of the experience.

Man muss hingehen, wenn das Wetter nicht so gut ist und außerhalb der Ferien. Dann kann man in vollen Zügen diese Pracht genießen.

kleines, geschitsträchtiges Schloß in Potsdam und gleichzig dessen Aushängeschild! Jedoch ist es viel kleiner, als man es erwartet hätte wenn man vorher die anderen Schlösser in der Umgebung gesehen hat. Die Preise schonn ziemlich knackig, haben uns deswegen auch entschieden, uns mit dem Blick von draussen und auf den Park zu begnügen.

Ein besonderer Tag in Sans-​Souci… Potsdam.
Ob Traum oder Wirklichkeit, diesen herrlichen Park mit seinen Schlössern, Palästen, Fontänen und Kunstwerken sollte man besucht haben… zumal er Sanssouci «Ohne Sorge» genannt wird… unzählige Figuren aus der Mythologie und dem römische Pantheon erwarten den Besucher, sie sollen dafür zeugen, dass Kunst und Natur untrennbar zusammen gehören…
Breitangelegten Allen, mit Zierblumen geschmückt, erlauben einen Blick auf das Schloss Sanssouci zu dem die treppenartig angelegten Weinterrassen führen auf welchen in verglasten Nischen, auch Obst und Weinsorten sowie ausländische Sorten wuchsen… Unterhalb der Terrassen befindet sich ein Ziergarten im barocken Stil und Blumen Broderien.
Die Fontäné ist von marmorne Götterfiguren und allegorische Darstellungen umsäumt… Venus und Merkur haben sich zu ihnen gesellt… ein Geschenk von Louis XV!
Die Geschichte dieses Schlosses ist bekannt; es war das im Rokokostil gebaute Sommerschloss des Königs von Preußen, Friedrich II der Große (1712 – 1786); ein kleines fürstliches Lusthaus von hohem Luxus, und nach seinem Geschmack… erzog dort am 1 Mai 1747 ein. Seine Angetraute Gemahlin Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-​Bevern, mir der seit 1733 verheiratet war, schob er nach seiner Thronbesteigung ins das Schloss Schönhausen ab!
Man könnte «Sanssouci» mit Versailles vergleichen, es ist vielfältiger, jedoch nicht feierlicher.
Hier empfing er seinen französischen Freund Voltaire und behielt ihn fast drei Jahre als Gast (von 1750 bis 1753).
Voltaire, der Philosoph, schmeichelte natürlich die Neigung des Königs, am Hofe nur französisch zu sprechen, in dem er gleichzeitig am königlichen Tisch saß, den silbernen Löffel im philosophischen Mund! Frédéric sprach und schrieb fließend die französische Sprache, verfasste auch Gedichte, welche Voltaire diplomatisch höflich applaudierte. Von den Besonderen königlichen Neigungen wurde erst viel später gesprochen… und bekannt. In jungen Jahren hatte er einen intimen Freund, Katte; Friedrich Wilhelm, der Vater von Friedrich ließ ihn vor den Augen seines Sohnes am 6 November 1730 vor der Burg von Cüstrin köpfen.
Der König ließ seinem Busenfreund Voltaire ein besonders schönes und reich dekoriertes Zimmer herrichten, leider wurde es zu spät fertig, Voltaire war schon abgereist…
Sicher war es eine große Liebesgeschichte zwischen diesen beiden großen Männern… sie hinterließen der Geschichte eine umfangreiche Korrespondenz von fast 4550 Briefen! Madame de Sévigné kann ihre Feder spitzen…
Friedrich II war ein großer Freund der Künste und Wissenschaften, er ließ in seiner Kleinen Galerie, zwischen den vergoldet weißen Korinthischen Kolonnen, die griechisch römische Götterwelt tanzen, sammelte… französische Malereien aus dem XVIII Jahrhundert… und darunter selbst ein Watteau
Für die Ausstattung seines Schlosses und Räume hatte er ein feines Gefühl, wählte sorgfältig alle Elemente aus mit Vorliebe zum Rokoko und dem Barock!
Seine Bibliothek reservierte er für sich persönlich… hier befinden sich tausende von Büchern… und natürlich alle Werke seines Freundes Voltaire!
In seinem Büro steht noch der Sessel in dem er im Jahre 1786 starb, und ein Jugend Gemälde des Königs ist zu sehen als er 25 Jahre alt war!
Der Marmorsaal ist selbstverständlich etwas Besonderes, reichlich ausgeschmückt wurden hier die berühmten «Philosophischen Soupers» gegeben, sehr königlich, durfte es dort zugegangen sein… Das Konzertzimmer, ebenfalls ein Schmuckstück, durfte sich an den Flötentönen des Königs ergötzen
…
Aber führen wir unsere Promenade im Park weiter;
Bachanten, Engel und verführerische Sirenen… mit goldtransparenten Haaren zeigen sich in voller Pracht und ohne Scham, ein Marmorbad lädt hübsche nackte Elfen zum Baden ein… kein Prunk wird gespart, um sich der Götterwelt dienlich zu zeigen!
Der französische Teil des Parks ist der schönste und reichhaltigste mit seinen unzähligen Marmorfiguren… ein Wunderwerk der Kunst.
Die alte Mühle dreht sich immer noch… seit 1787 hat sie abenteuerliche Zeiten überstanden, und nun stellt sie verschieden Bio-​Mehle her!
Die große Überraschung; Noch heute kann man den Alten Fritz treffen, er spielt auf seiner Flöte vor der Mühle,
Weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind; Das Drachenhäuschen, das Neues Palais”, die römischen Bäder, der goldene Chinesische Tempel, unzählige sind sie… und, nicht vergessen, dass man hier innehalten darf… die Ruhe genießen, wieder Mensch sein, weit ab vom Straßen Rummel, in saftig grüner Natur und still glitzernden Wasserlauf … ein Glück, welches man sich öfter erlauben sollte!

Truth be told, although I have been to Schloss Sanssouci a handful of times, I have never been inside the actual building. I definitely plan to at some point, but until then, I will enjoy it from the outside. In fact, one of my favorite activities is bringing a picnic lunch and a couple of beers and hanging out on the circular benches surrounding the fountain. If the weather is lovely, it is glorious, and the people watching is usually awesome too.

Comme à Versailles, on peut n’avoir visité à Potsdam que les jardins (gratuits) du château, et y avoir tout de même passé une belle journée sans impression d’être passé à côté de quelque chose.
Mais contrairement à Versailles, la visite du château, point central du parc, laisse un goût de trop peu: les dimensions imposantes du parc né laissent pas deviner que le château est en fait tout petit. Certes les pièces sont belles, l’audio-guide est bien fait, mais on paye fort cher une visite torchée en 25 minutes top chrono sans se presser.
Attention, ici aussi la mode des tickets horaires a frappé, on achète donc un ticket pour une heure de passage précise: si vous tenez à la visite et venez le week-​end, commencez donc par aller acheter vos tickets au château avant d’attaquer votre promenade dans les jardins, pour être sûr d’avoir l’horaire de votre choix.

Be very aware on which day you visit this place, Monday and Tuesday is limited admission with many closures.
Also check out the many reviews on Tripadvisor. The staff in Potsdam gets consistently bad reviews for rude behavior.
I recently toured Europe and visited a lot of Castles, Palaces and historic sites. All of them were great and the staff was always very professional except in Potsdam. These are run by Non-​Profit groups, the visitors money enables these places to be maintained and restored.
It can really be a downer on your vacation, to be mistreated at such an important historic site.
All the beauty of the gardens and the glamour of the Palaces can’t make up for being mistreated.

Genau richtig für einen Sonntagsausflug :) das kleine Versailles ist wunderschön und man fühlt sich wie im Urlaub. Ich bin im Sommer öfter in dem riesigen Park, sonnen, entspannen und mit Freunden einfach einen schönen Tag vor dieser wunderschönen Kulisse verbringen.
Im Sommer sind da zwar Touris, aber wo gibts die nicht ;)? Und das Gebiet ist groß genug so verläuft sich alles irgendwie.

Wenn wir an Friedrich den Großen denken, dann ist kein anderes Schloss so mit seiner Persönlichkeit verbunden wie Schloss Sanssouci. Der Name «ohne Sorge» ist als Wunsch und Leitmotiv des Königs zu verstehen, denn hierher zog er sich mit seinen Windhunden am liebsten zurück.
Die Lage des Schlosses auf den berühmten Weinbergterrassen und die original erhaltenen Raumausstattungen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert lassen uns heute noch etwas ahnen von den Vorstellungen der damaligen Zeit. Die Räume sind geprägt von Eleganz und Prachtentfaltung. Sie lassen aber auch die Liebe des Königs zur Umgebung deutlich spüren.
Bemerkenswert ist, dass erst im Jahre 1991 der Wunsch des Königs erfüllt wurde und er nach einer langen Odyssee neben seinen Hunden auf der Terrasse des Schlosses bestattet wurde. Das Schloss und der Park sind immer wieder einen Besuch wert.

Das Schloss Sanssouci und die Park-​/​Gartenanlage drum herum sind immer wieder beeindruckend. Hier kann man ganze Tage verbringen.
Ein Besuch hier sollte man daher immer wieder mal einplanen. Dennoch: Um nichts in der Welt würde ich gerne mit dem Alten Fritz tauschen wollen. Nicht nur, dass das Schloss im Herbst, Winter und Frühling recht kalt ist, nein, er hatte nichteinmal Unilocal ;-)

Hallo liebe Leser.
Das Schloss Sanssouci in der schönen Schlösser– und Gartenlandschaft in Potsdam ließ der preußische König Friedrich der II. in den Jahren 1745 bis 1747 ein kleines Sommerschloss im Rokkokostil errichten. Mit der Planung beauftragte er den Architekten Georg Wenzeslaus v. Konbelsdorff nach dem in Berlin eine Straße an der Stadtautobahn benannt wurde. Das Schloss wurde ¹⁸⁴¹⁄₄₂ umgebaut und um zwei Seitenflügel erweitert. Dieser Umbau wurde durch Persius, der viele Anlagen in Potsdam baute, durgeführt. Das Schloss besticht durch seine schöné Lage auf den Weinterrassen mit direkter Ausrichutng nach Süden zur Sonne. Auch die Sonnen in den Pavillions deuten darauf hin, dass der damalige König ein echter Sonnenanbeter war!!! Das Schloss ist zu jeder Jahreszeit sehenswert und im Winter sind Mengen von über 30 Zentimeter Schnee im Park dort immer mal wieder möglich, wie zuletzt vor 2 Jahren.
Man sollte sich Zeit für den gesamten Park nehmen und auch die anderen Dinge, wie die Orangerie, das Chinseische Teehaus und das Neue Palais mit besuchen!!! Erreichbar mit dem Auto oder mit dem Bus 695 bis vor das Schloss, Nordseite!!!

I did a totally unplanned sight-​seeing visit, as my Doktorvater who I haven’t seen in months invited me to join. I should have brought my camera if I knew this was happening. Anyway, we boarded the S-​Bahn and the bus from the university and headed here.
They only have guided tours of the palace (yes, there are plenty of palaces in the area, and this review only pertains to Schloss Sanssouci in Sanssouci Park). We decided to go to the German guided tour, as we figured the English audio tour was a bit of a wait. It was a small group, just 6 people, and we paid 12 EUR for the 45-​minute tour.
It was a very informative tour, and I definitely learned a lot. Either my German comprehension is getting better, or the German the tour guide used is just easier to understand, but I felt more involved in this tour than in other guided tours I have visited lately.
Visiting Potsdam is definitely better during better weather, not during the winter, as they block some of the passages around the gardens, as the snow makes the incline slippery. That being said, the scenery is still gorgeous. You can take pictures inside the palace, but you cannot use flash, and you have to buy a 3 EUR photo permit.

From the terrace gardens to the buildings, this was a beautiful place. I only walked on the outside grounds but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Read about the significance of Sanssouci before you come here to fully appreciate what you’re seeing and stop often to take in the scenery. A place to see if you’re in Potsdam.

Gut alles so erhalten zu sehen. 10Räume mit audioguide 12EUR geht in Ordnung. Man kann sich trotzdem alles ganz in Ruhe betrachten. Prachtvoll schön des alten Fritzes sein Sommerschloss.

A must visit place while in Berlin!
Friedrich the Great has excellent taste! His summer castle is grandiose and lavish. The gardens are green and beautiful. I went with a large group of people. Our tour guide talked about the rooms and their purpose, as well as the inspiration and history behind the décor. The rooms are well preserved and being in the castle makes you feel like you’ve stepped back into the late 1700’s about to have tea with Freddy and Voltaire.
Though it was raining and cold during our visit, our day trip to Potsdam was worth the drive to see this beautiful palace. Definitely pay the € 3 to have permission to take pictures! And leave your umbrella by the front!

Perfect Tourist Attraction. Beautiful Park, Buildings. Just unbelievable. Pay the € 2 voluntary entrance fee and you’ll get a small map — might be worth it.

Auch von aussen eine wunderbare Architektur inmitten eines faszinierenden Schlossparks. Nur ist das Museum MONTAGS geschlossen als Tourist, der 4 oder 7 oder mehr Tage in Berlin verbringt, weiss man einerseits nicht immer, welcher Wochentag genau ist, andererseits sind das Neue Palais (oder auch das Jüdische Museum) montags offen, so dass man nicht unbedingt auf die Idee kommt, dass gerade Sanssouci montags geschlossen sein könnte Komischerweise ist der Museumsshop offen (warum eigentlich?), und das sichtlich genervte Personal muss immer wieder zahlreiche Besucher, die extra bis nach Potsdam gezockelt sind, auf das HEUTE GESCHLOSSEN hinweisen. Für diese Kommunikationspanne 2 Sterne Abzug! Sorry, Fritz!

Erstmalig war ich 1994 auf einer Fahrradtour im Rahmen einer Schul-​Projektwoche hier gewesen damals wie heute 18 Jahre später hat dieses einzigartige Bauwerk nicht an Faszination verloren!
Ich komme gerne wieder her nicht erst in 18 Jahren wieder !

There is no mistake Prussian Royalty were pros at living lavishly. Schloss Sanssouci and its gardens are beautiful. Unfortunately, I’m unable to describe how lovely the interior is, because I wasn’t able to tour.
When my friend and I visited Potsdam for a second time, we decided we’d take a tour of both Sanssouci and Neues (talk about grandiose!). We had no issues with our visit to Neues Palais. The staff was welcoming and friendly, and we were able to use our University IDs to receive a student discount. Can’t say the same for Sanssouci, because the man working at the ticket counter was a complete jerk to my friend and I. We asked if we could receive the student discount rate. He looked at our University IDs and rudely asked where the expiration dates are located. There aren’t any on our cards. I understand that not all museums and historical sites accept student IDs without expiration dates, but we didn’t have to be treated in such a disrespectful manner.
After he gave up on trying to find the expiration date on our cards, he told us that the next tour wouldn’t start for another two hours (Why didn’t you tell us this sooner? Oh right, trying to find that expiration date…). Had to pass on the tour, since we had to return to Berlin in two hours; although, we ended up leaving right after we exited from Sanssouci.
Would I return to Potsdam to visit Schloss Sanssouci? Yes, of course. There is no doubt in my mind that I would enjoy visiting Friedrich’s «humble abode.» I just hope customer service improves when I return.

Sehr schönes Schloss Friedrich des Grossen. Unbedingt im Rahmen einer Führung besichtigen, danach in den Schlosspark. Unmittelbar hinter dem Schloss liegt auch das Grab Friedrich des Grossen, in welchem er mitsamt seiner Lieblingshunde begraben liegt.

From now on, I shall be known as Ed the Great because by adding «the Great» to my name, I get a palace by default. At least I believe that’s what happened when Frederick the Great decided to turn an orchard into his formal retreat. Apparently it wasn’t easy being the King of Prussia during the 18^th century, especially when he would rather immerse himself in music and philosophy rather than war. Sanssouci is an appropriate name since it literally translates to «without worry», and he certainly found a nice, bucolic spot about 45 minutes outside of central Berlin.
Frederick built two key residences here, Sanssouci Palace and Neues Palais, at opposite ends of the expansive grounds here. The showstopper is Sanssouci Palace, which is a vision in golden rococo atop a vineyard terrace (see photos). With only twelve rooms, it’s small compared to the likes of Versailles and Schonbrunn, but the ornate architectural detail is impressive, as are the grounds with the south-​facing garden façade stepping down to a huge fountain. Head west for at least a twenty-​minute walk, and you will find the more massive Neues Palais (New Palace). This huge structure contains over 200 rooms spread over two stories (see photo).
Along the way is a stunning Chinese teahouse, a pavilion decorated in the Chinoiserie style (see photo). With all the golden statues and columns, it’s quite an unexpected sight. Now you can do what I did and take one of the half-​day, 40-​Euro bus tours to Potsdam to attempt to take it all in. The problem is that you’re given less than ninety minutes to see everything here. I was sweating bullets since it was a hot, insect-​infested day with a lot of the walkways blocked for a major excavation effort that was underway. Better to take the train and enjoy it at your own pace and also get an opportunity to walk through what looks like a charming town, Potsdam. Ah well, next time…

There is nothing I dislike about this place, and so many things I love. The palaces, the statues… the park! I have spent many a Sunday wandering around, taking pictures and just soaking it all in. The garden has evolved in styles, from baroque to romantic, and is especially wonderful because it has hills. This means you get to have vistas where you can appreciate the sheer beauty of it all.
Sanssouci itself is the little retreat of Frederick the Great, it was his personal place, and not used for formal state occasions… this makes it delightful in that the details of the place really show a personality and a love of life.
If you get hungry from wandering about all day in this gorgeous place, there are currywurst carts, a fabulous little tea house (dragon house) on the park grounds themselves and restaurants not far away in Potsdam itself. GO GO GO. this place is so worth it.

Dieses Schloss ist eigentlich auch Kultur Pflichtprogramm für alle die in Berlin und Umgebung sind. Der schön angelegte Schlossgarten lädt zum Prominieren ein. Man kann sich mit geistigem Auge vorstellen, wie es wohl früher dort war. Das Schloss ist nachdem es restauriert wurde in gutem Zustand und man sollte ihm einen Besuch abstatten,

My brochure tells me there are 30 castles and palaces to visit whilst in Berlin and Potsdam. Apparently the Hohenzollerns got bored easily and built lots of extras.
This is the granddaddy of them all. The favorite residence of Frederick the Great, and the place where he passed on (the chair where that happened is proudly displayed, along with a painting of the event).
This palace is 12 euros entry, and they nick you an extra 3 euros if you want to take pix inside. Seriously? You lose a star for that nonsense. The place is grand and all, but thats just tacky and stupid.
132 steps lead you up the front ‘walk’ — the Hohenzollerns had a strange stairs fetish I think. The individual rooms are way over the top, even by the standards of the rococo. My favorite bits include the gilt spiderweb (with spiders) in the music room, and the carved birds and whatnot in the Voltaire guest room. Golden goth-​y spiders on the ceiling. Brilliant.
Oh, and look for the nubian busts with extra white eyes and teeth. Those would cause an incident in the US. Bonus: An Andy Warhol hung in the servant’s rooms on the way out.
FAIL: There are 3 parts to the Palace. The Royal rooms, the kitchens and the Ladies’ wing. For some incomprehensible reason they each have their own ticket scheme and operating hours. This is simply the dumbest arrangement I have ever seen at any museum I have visited — and I have visited hundreds. Standardize people, standardize. Its a single experience, not 3.

Schloss Sanssouci is an amazing palace and with an expansive park. Although I visited in mid-​august, Sanssouci was not overwhelmingly crowded. Ticket to access the inside of the palace by guided tour were easy to purchase, and the wait was less than ½ an hour.
The interior of the palace is impressive. The most remarkable are the 3D wood carvings that come out of the wall. One room has full size parrots perched all over the walls. A spider’s web covers the ceiling of another room.
The park is free to access which is a nice after having to pay to enter each of the buildings. The fountains at the bottom of the terraced gardens were a great place to relax.

Dieses Schloss und die Parkanlage sind schwer zu beschreiben, aber wenn man dann dort ist, wird man «verzaubert».
Wenn man auf dem Gelände steht, möchte man sofort in das Sommerschloss einziehen.
Es ist sowas von schön gebaut und der «Garten» angelegt worden, dass es eine Perle unter all den Schlössern darstellt was ich in meinem Leben gesehen habe.
Alles Andere überlasse ich Kunsthistorikerinnen.
Unbedingt sehenswert.

Sanssouci palace is beautiful if a bit over the top but it’s still a must see attraction in the Berlin area. Getting into the palace isn’t as easy as you might think. The palace gets so many visitors that they have a set number of tickets for the palace per day. So either get there early if you want to go inside or try and reserve a ticket before.

In der Bornstedter Kirche sind seit Generationen Mitglieder meiner Familie getauft, getraut und betrauert worden.
Ich habe mich etliche Stunden in der Friedhofsverwaltung aufgehalten und in alten Kirchenbüchern gestöbert. Einige Daten habe ich gefunden, leider nicht genug. So habe ich zwar von meinen Ur-​Ur-​Großeltern die Namen herausgefunden aber keine Daten.
Ab dem nächsten Tag ging die Verwaltungsangestellte in Urlaub. Ich hoffe, dass ich nochmals herkommen werde.
Urlaub 2007: Von der Tram-​Haltestelle Bornstedt, Kirchallee gehe ich die Ribbeckstraße entlang. Am Ende der Straße liegt auf der linken Seite das Bornstedter Krongut und auf der rechten Seite erhebt sich der 43m hohe Glockenturm der Bornstedter Kirche. Wie an vielen Kirchen ist auch dieser Turm einem italienischen Campanile nachempfunden
Der Kirchenbau von 1806 wurde 1856 nach Plänen des Königs Friedrich Wilhelm IV. durch den Schinkel-​Schüler F. A. Stüler geändert. Weiterhin 1881 durch den damaligen Kronprinzen Friedrich Wilhelm (später Friedrich III.) und seiner englischen Gemahlin Victoria erweitert und modernisiert.
Ich gehe durch die vorgelagerte Säulenarkade mit dem angebauten Glockenturm. Um in die Kirche zu gelangen, gehe ich zur hinteren Seite.
Der ganze Innenbereich ist wunderschön ausgestattet. Die Beleuchtung zaubert warme Lichter auf die dunkle Holzverkleidung. Die Emporen zu beiden Seiten, der Holzsäulengang, die Bänke alles strahlt im satten dunklen Holzton.
Das Boden-​Mosaik ist zum Teil mit Teppichen belegt. Sicher sollen die wertvollen Kacheln geschont werden. Zwei verschnörkelte Kronleuchter hängen über dem Mittelgang. Es gibt sehr schöné, alte Kirchenfenster. Was mich am meisten beeindruckte, ist die Orgel. Niemals vorher sah ich Orgelpfeifen, die mit Blumenranken bemalt waren. Ich las, dieses geschah, nach englischem Vorbild, auf Wunsch der Kronprinzessin Victoria.
Einige Schritte links neben dem Eingang hängt an der Wand ein Epitaph über Jacob Paul Freiherrn von Gundling. Er war Mitglied des Tabakkollegiums des Königs Friedrich Wilhelm I. (Soldatenkönig), bekleidete hohe Ämter, war gebildet aber auch eitel, feige und letztlich ein Trunkenbold. Das Epitaph versinnbildlicht mit Minerva, Pfauenfeder und Hasen seinen Charakter. Der Freiherr wurde auch noch nach seinem Tod verhöhnt. Auf Befehl des Königs wurde er in einem Weinfass zu Grabe getragen.
