Possibly the most amusingly remote Ryanair-port it has been my pleasure to fly to, and little more than a small shed in a field. Altenburg is around twenty miles south of Leipzig, and is a charming small town. However, the airport is not in Altenburg itself, rather in the village of Nobitz just outside it, which has the grand total of twenty-five individual streets(according to Google Maps). There is a shuttle bus linking the facility to Leipzig centre(1hr 15 away) and the non-bustling, non-metropolis of Altenburg(15 mins away). Previously a Russian military landing point during the bad ol’ Soviet days, this airport definitely puts the field back into airfield. Still, at least you’re never going to get much of a queue for security.
