Westberlin

A good place to get a delicious bite and a very good coffee.
I would usually give this 4 stars, but it gets bonus points for giving me an escape from the Charlie vibe.
Although I must say it still has a youth hostel vibe…
Anyway, the coffee was great.

I’m a creature of habit, and one that I am not apt to break is that my mornings start with a good cup of coffee. While traveling through Europe, I wasn’t willing to give this up, and thankfully Westberlin was close to my hotel, meaning I didn’t have to travel TOO far to dodge the countless Starbucks and European equivalents.
Westberlin serves thoughtfully prepared third wave coffee in a gallery-​esque environment. I was able to get a truly excellent pour over and a pastry, sit at a clean and well-​lit table while using their complimentary wifi. When the rest of my days are go-​go-​go, I cherish these quiet morning moments, and Westberlin provided it. And to find this in one of the most touristy centers of the city? Excellent.

Leider ist das Westberlin immer laut,überfüllt und unpersönlich. Zwar hat es einen extra «workspace», aber bei der lauten Mukke kann sich wohl niemand konzentrieren. Die Preise sind für die Qualität der Speisen zu hoch. Allerdings schmeckt die Carrot Cake dort unglaublich gut! Deswegen gibt es 3 statt 2 Sterne.

Hip designer coffe place with great coffee and tasty pastries. We ordered the freshly baked rhubarb coffee cake and it really hit the spot.
The place feels like it could be in any major city — a very international vibe. There’s also a lot of art and designer magazines available to read while you’re there or buy to take home or on the plane with you as you jet set to wherever you’re going. They were playing great deep house music in the background as we sat and warmed ourselves up with a cup of coffee.
This is a great little escape from the Auber-​tourist vibe of Fredrichestrabe in Berlin, made us feel like we were in Brooklyn or LA, our home away from home. Everyone speaks English and made it easy to get a cup of hot coffee on New Year’s Eve.

Exceptional coffee, my flat white was smooth af. Staffs were friendly. Despite of the proliferation of specialty coffee shops in Berlin that serve mediocre coffee, this one managed to stand out.

Eine Oase an Minimalismus, gutem Geschmack und herrlichem Kaffee in einem sonst so sterilem, seelenlosen Viertel.

Ein richtiges Szenecafé. Von Kaffee, Kuchen und Croissants über Quiche bis Suppen findet man hier immer den richtigen Snack. Die Location ist minimalistisch und schön hell eingerichtet und bietet kleine aber auch große Tische, falls man in Gruppen kommt.
Ein Szenecafé wäre außerdem kein solches, ohne Englisch sprechende Menschen und aufgeklappte Macbooks an jedem Tisch: D WiFi gibt’s natürlich auch. Das ganze schafft eine gute Atmosphäre zum arbeiten. Ab und zu ist die Musik bloß viel zu laut, aber das lässt sich ja besprechen.
Das Westberlin ist zudem ja nicht bloß Café, sondern auch «Mediashop». Es gibt moderne Bücher und Magazine mit visuellem Schwerpunkt, die auch einfach dekorativ sind, wie sie da in den Regalen platziert wurden.
Ich habe mich bei der Eröffnung vor ein paar Jahren sehr gefreut, weil das Café eine schöné Alternative zum touristischen Starbucks an der Ecke ist und genau das war, was hier gefehlt hat!

Outstanding all around third-​wave shop. Well-​dialed espresso made for balanced, sweet flat whites and cappuccinos. The aeropress Ethiopian was impressively and very carefully prepared. Baristas were friendly, conversational, and welcoming. Don’t let the touristy area make you think this shop isn’t top-​notch specialty coffee!

Das Essen ist eigentlich immer sehr, sehr gut — kann man bei den doch etwas höheren Preisen aber auch erwarten.
Ambiente:
Oft recht laute Musik, sehr hipsterig, muss man mögen. Man kann aber draußen im ruhigen «Garten» sitzen, was natürlich Pluspunkte gibt.
Service:
Der Service ist leider ziemlich schlecht. Das Personal spricht (fast) kein Deutsch, manche (scheinbar) auch kein Englisch, das machts natürlich manchmal schwierig, wenn man einfach nur bestellen möchte. Zudem wird sich hier auch nicht auf den Kunden konzentriert der gerade bedient wird, der wird auch mal einfach stehen gelassen, um irgendwas anderes zu machen. Wechselgeld wird auch eher selten richtig raus gegeben. Insgesamt sind sie einfach viel zu wenig am Kunden interessiert, was oft nervig ist.
Fazit:
Wenn das Essen richtig gut ist, kann ich auf Service verzichten. Also komme ich weiter gern her.

Joar, ganz ok. Das spiegelt es schon wieder. So richtig überzeugt hat mich das Westberlin nicht. Zwar ist es praktisch gelegen (Friedrichstraße Höhe Checkpoint Charlie), aber mich hat die Leistung drinnen nicht wirklich beeindruckt.
Die Auswahl an Essen und Trinken ist überschaubar, einiges meist nicht verfügbar und die Preise äußerst saftig. Ehrlich gesagt für meinen Geschmack einen Tick zu hoch. Und als Hamburgerin bin ich einiges gewohnt. Ich hatte einen «frischen» Saft — nur leider war der nicht ganz frisch sondern bereits vorgepresst. Der Kuchen war lecker aber etwas trocken.
Das Publikum im Westberlin ist eine Mischung an Touris und Hipstern. Ganz nett, aber fast alle verschwinden hinter ihren Laptops und blockieren dabei einen ganzen Tisch. So richtig wohl fühlt man sich ohne Laptop oder Tablet in der Hand nicht. Und das kann man mal machen aber wenn es alle außer einem machen ist es eher ungemütlich. Schade, denn das Westberlin hat Potenzial!

This café, situated a block or two down from Checkpoint Charlie, has a variety of pastries and sandwiches available in addition to their coffee selection. There’s plenty of seating with numerous tables inside and chairs on the rear patio and the sidewalk out front. Overall, it produces a very bright aesthetic with lots of light colored wood and vibrant colors with soft techno music playing in the background.
The cinnamon roll was filling when coupled with a flat white and I didn’t find it to be overly sweet. It was a great place to start the day and had plenty of table space to work if so desired.

Beautiful space with nice coffee and breakfast pastries and cakes. Rhubarb crumble was good for a morning carb and sugar hit. Aeropress coffee available! Magazines and workspaces make for a nice hangout. They have great chairs too! It’s all in the details.

Fantastic coffee shop in the middle of a hyper touristy district. Great service, and food; we loved our espresso and filter coffee selections, the apple pie and cinnamon roll was excellent too. Hip décor but not pretentious, a great stop in the middle of Berlin after touring its sights. Will be back for more!

This coffee shop was recommended by a colleague, so while in Berlin my husband and I gave it a try. We stopped in for a morning coffee and sweet treat for breakfast. The staff behind the counter were ok, but not very friendly. The women we paid gave us the wrong change but corrected the mistake as soon as we pointed it out. (Good thing my husband was paying attention!) The drinks and sweets were great. The blueberry pie was SO good! The crust was very buttery and makes my mouth water as I think about it now! A Must have! I’m giving only 4 stars because the ‘free wifi’ didn’t work. Why even bother saying you have free wifi? Disappointing, but the buttery blueberry pie made up for it ;)

A delightful little café that is a godsend in the midst of tourist-​trappy Checkpoint Charlie/​Mauer land. They have tons of newspapers and magazines, and a small assortment of pastries. If you’re like me and prefer savory to sweet in the morning, they have LOTS of sandwiches: fig and Brie, ham and cheese, salami and olive spread, caprese, to name a few. They all have fresh lettuce/​cucumber/​pepper sticking out of them, and they’re all made on dark German rye or pumpernickel bread. The sandwich I had was delicious. Great fuel for a day of sightseeing!
My friend’s coffee and cinnamon bun was good. As for my tea, a certain German stereotype was fulfilled when the boy behind the counter informed me that my rooibos tea needed to steep for «7 Minuten, bitte.» Jawohl. It was indeed perfectly steeped.
The wifi is excellent too!

Great little modern coffee place. Free wifi and nice snack food. Great sitting, clear and spacious. Would definitely recommend it.

Tolle Atmosphäre, perfekt für Tandem-​Sessions (language exchange) oder Arbeits-​Sessions am Laptop oder einfach mal zum Entspannen und Zeitunglesen. Es ist auch nicht weit vom Zentrum, direkt an der Friedrichstraße.

Been twice. The place is cozy. Nice and a bit expensive. The major problem is the volume of the music. When it comes to concentrate in your reading or your computer it’s hard.

Very Nice café, excellent food and good readings. I particularly recommend the sandwiches (made with excellent bread). The atmosphere is very relaxing and you can stay a Long time to read a book or magazines you can pick on the shelves while you have your breakfast.

Considering that this place is so closely located to Checkpoint Charley it’s a kind of hidden gem. Great cakes and the coffee is good value for money. There is free wifi too.
The place has a very modern look and is not romantic but if you are looking for a place to relax or work, you are right here.

The space is cool and they have a selection of awesome books and magazines, but there is never a place to sit and the coffee is so so.

Home-​made cakes, fabulous coffee, and a choice of hot chocolate with 60% or 80% cocoa. Plus wifi. Nice modern interior with top quality food. Forget about the Starbucks down the road!

Etwas teuer aber sehr sehr lecker. Waren in der Mittagspause, gut besucht und sehr freundliches Personal! Hatten Lachs quicke, Gurkensalat und Stulle ! Alles sehr sehr frisch und yammy!:)

Sehr schönes Café mit Möglichkeit zum Arbeiten am PC. Stromanschlüsse sind vorhanden, sowie ein großer Tisch mit angenehmer Sitzhöhe. Das Personal ist freundlich und vertreibt einen auch eine halbe Stunde nach Ladenschluss nicht aus dem Lokal. Der Tee ist mit frischen Kräutern gemacht und auch das Essen (bisher noch nicht probiert) sieht mehr als ansprechend und sehr frisch aus. Das einzig störende ist die Handtrocknermaschine auf den Toiletten, viel zu laut!
Ich komme trotzdem gerne wieder!

Close to Checkpoint Charlie, probably one of the most touristic parts of Berlin, you can have a great cup of coffee at West-​Berlin. If you have a weakness for interior design, this is a must go during your stay in this inspiring city.
I have been there during fall and summer, but I have to admit the seasons don’t really matter. During summer you can enjoy the coffee on a sunny patio, but if the weather does not allow you, there is always a trendy interior to take a break. Westberlin was established about one year ago, but has already made its statement in Berlin. Except for a nice cup of slow coffee, they also have a media shop filled with books for design lovers. If you are in the mood for a quick read, you can always take one of the magazines from the stacks near the windows.
West Berlin is loved by true coffee fans, mostly because their variety of coffee beans changes every other month. They purchase beans from famous roasters such as Five Elephant from Berlin, Drop Coffee from Stockholm and many others. If you have the time to stay a little longer, try their roast on the aeropress; my favorite way to brew coffee. Of course they also serve several other beverages. From fresh tea to apple juice. Their carrot cake is also very tasty and they offer a wide selection of fresh sandwiches and salads.
The environment is cosy, but also inspiring to motivate you to work. The acoustics, light and general mood are balanced and soothing; perfect for a productive coffee break! A must on your Berlin spots list.

Wenn man sich mutig die Friedrichstr. aufwärts durch den Touriauflauf über den Berliner Timesquare kämpft, findet man gezielt angesteuert das Westberlin.
Ein supercleanes, durchgestyltes Design-​Café mit einer ansprechenden QuicheKuchenBoulettenSuppenSandwichtheke, die nicht nach genormtem, vertikalem Wunderkuchen-​Muffin-​Cheesecake-​Cateringkonzept schreit.
Schreien tut hier sowieso keiner, nur very-​internätionäl auf Englisch bedienen– die Location und das Publikum gibt Ihnen Recht! Dabei aber nicht unangenehm elitär, sondern wirklich freundlich und hilfsbereit.
Mein zimtiger Carrot-​Cake mit grob-​gehakten Mandeln schmeckte köstlich (nach Weihnachten!) und kam schön locker-​flockig daher.
Auch der Mandel-​Schokokuchen meiner Begleitung überzeugte, lediglich das etwas überforderte Servicepersonal kam nicht ganz mit dem Abräumen des benutzten Vorgängergeschirrs hinterher.
Insgesamt eine nette Step-​In-​Option für die Gegend, die für mich aber aufgrund der Atmosphäre nicht zum länger Verweilen einlädt, da das konzeptionelle Interior doch etwas sehr steril (mit Selbstreinigungsfunktion.) und unpersönlich wirkt.*

Unfortunately, I cannot share the enthusiastic reviews that others have written for this place. I finally had the opportunity to try this café, given that it is very close to where I work, and yet I came out of it rather underwhelmed.
So I ordered a flat white, as well as a slice of the cold dog. The cold dog was great (4 stars), the coffee was good (3 stars), the ambiance was good (3 stars), and the wifi was non-​existent (2 stars). At first, I thought that I misheard what the password was, so I asked a second person, but it turns out that I did hear the password correctly, and yet their router doesn’t recognize both my smartphone, as well as my laptop. So I figured it is less likely my problem, but more theirs.
See, I usually wouldn’t be so gung-​ho with pointing out the malfunctioning wifi, but if you are promoting your café to be a place not only to drink coffee, but to work, browse reading material, chillax, and be connected to the World Wide Web («free wifi» is a phrase they use for their one-​liner description in Google searches) then you better deliver. What’s the use of wide-​open tables and comfortable chairs when you cannot be online?
Okay, so I had the case of great expectations. But if they want to be a hip and cool place that serves coffee to young professionals that are toting laptops, then they better have a good tech person. As it is, I know other places that can give me both good coffee and a good environment to work outside my office.

Great place. A cool and white design, but still very cosy. Nice staff. With good smalltalk in English and German, about speaking English in Germany. Very friendly.
Nice vibe, especially when you want to work or read a book. Good music!
And, last but not least, the best cheesecake I ever had.

Yes! I like Westberlin! Und ich habe mich gestern im Westberlin sehr wohlgefühlt. Wir waren zum Lunch da und es gab lecker aussehende kleine Sachen wie belegte Brote und Quiche und Kuchen und Bouletten jenseits des Üblichen. Dazu feinen Sencha-​Tee und Leitungswasser satt und für danach einen guten Kaffee.
Das Interieur ist modern, hell, freundlich mit gut gemachter Raumaufteilung. Es herrscht Zitronengelb und helles Grün vor, leises Grau. Und zwischendurch ein roter Stuhl. Man merkt, dass hier ein Fachmann, in diesem Fall eine Architekt, dahintersteckt. An den Wänden finden sich dementsprechend Kunst/​Designmagazine und Architekturmagazine zum Lesen und Kaufen.
Das Westberlin ist eine Oase im besten Sinne des Wortes. Am unteren Ende der Friedrichstrasse gelegen mit einem grossen Schaufenster auf ebenjene. Freiem WLAN und in Zukunft der ein oder anderen Veranstaltung zu — man ahnt es Buchvorstellungen im Design– und Architekturbereich.

This might be one of my favorite cafes in Berlin. Situated quietly a few hundred meters from Checkpoint Charlie, westberlin is the perfect place to stop by on any given day. The bright and open space promotes a great environment to work in. In the back room, they have a huge table with tons of plugs which is PERFECT for me because the battery life on my MacBook sucks. The noise level isnt super loud but the café has minimal house playing in the background which I personally like. On top of having great coffee, they have a super friendly staff and great desserts. My only gripe is that they’re internet can be spotty AT TIMES, but usually really good. There’s also a really cute barista that works here too :)
The cheesecake here is to DIE for. The salmon quiche here is amazing as well. It’s not extremely cheesy (which makes it even better in my book)! And a little side note, all the baristas here are gorgeous in their own right. Many of them dawn beautiful tattoos. Just a little extra added eyecandy to the already amazing experience.

Café und Süßes das dort angeboten wird wirklich sehr lecker.
Personal auch sehr nett, spricht leider kein Deutsch.

Großartiges Essen, leckerer Kaffee. Das englischsprechende Personal finde ich auch sehr anstrengend und die Preise leider so horrend, dass ich es trotz der wirklich hervorragenden Snacks meide.

Die Hippster werden es lieben. Für mich sieht der Laden aus wie die Elternausgabe der Spielecke bei IKEA.
Der Latte war allerdings Weltklasse, das muss man neidlos anerkennen. Hat aber auch seinen Preis.

hatte mir nach den positiven kritiken in der tagespresse mehr versprochen. das personal ist zwar sehr freundlich, spricht aber leider nur englisch was leider dem berliner trend entspricht. der espresso ist (zumindest als ich da war) sehr schlecht gebrüht und dadurch sehr bitter und nicht heiß, der filterkaffee kommt aus der thermoskanne. die quiche war nicht heiß. zudem musste die bedineung daran riechen, um zu wissen, ob es eine lachs oder eine andere geschmacksrichtung-​zubereitung war. nicht wirklich appetitlich.
einzig die belegten brote waren lecker und frisch. leider kein guter neuzugang für die mittagspause.

Wer am Ende der Friedrichstraße — nach Currywurstmuseum oder Check Point Charlie — sich eine Café-​Pause gönnen möchte, dem sei das westberlin ans Herz gelegt.
Als Café-​Liebhaber empfehle ich den Cappuccino mit der schwedischen Café-​Sorte — wie mir der Inhaber erklärte, eignet sich diese Sorte viel besser als italienische Röstungen. Mich hat’s überzeugt.
Wer lieber eine heiße Schokolade möchte, bekommt nichts weniger als Valrhona-​Schokolade. Die Sandwiches sehen auch liebevoll gemacht aus.
Freier Zugang zu WiFi und eine ziemlich gute Zeitschriftenauswahl — ich würde sagen, die Friedrichstraße hat endlich ein gutes Café.

Endlich gibt es auch in dieser Gegend guten Kaffee. Espresso von Drop Coffee und Filterkaffee von Five Elephant (auf Wunsch frisch mit der AeroPress gebrüht). Preise sind etwas hoch, Cappuccino 2,80 EUR und AeroPress-​Kaffee 3,50 EUR, aber noch gerechtfertigt für die professionelle Zubereitung (Starbucks könnte sich da mal né Scheibe von abschneiden) und die hohen Kosten des Wareneinsatzes (v.a. Drop Coffee). Auf jeden Fall ein besseres Preis-​/​Leistungsverhältnis als bei den meisten Tourischuppen um die Ecke.
Auch das Essen ist gut: Cheesecake auch von Five Elephant, Zimtschnecken von Zeit für Brot, leckere belegte Croissants und Milchreis.
Abzug gibt es aber für die Atmosphäre: alles ein bisschen übertrieben stylisch, allerdings ohne erkennbares Konzept (z.B. eine bunte Mischung an verschiedensten Stühlen), und nicht besonders gemütlich, finde ich.
Außerdem finde ich, dass für Milchgetränke ein zweiter, dunklerer Espresso als der Drop Coffee angeboten werden sollte.
Ach ja: ein Mediashop ist das ganze auch noch, hinten gibt es Zeitschriften zu kaufen, ein bisschen wie beim Do you read me?, allerdings mit viel weniger Auswahl.
Insgesamt aber eine nette Bereicherung dieser Gegend. Und es ist gut zu wissen, dass jetzt auch unwissende Touristen in den Genuss einer guten Tasse Kaffee kommen dürfen.

Un lieu arty tout près de Check point Charlie mais à l’écart des plans touristiques .
Des magazines, une play list sympa et des produits très frais. Les sandwichs et gâteaux sont super bons. Un chouette endroit pour une pause au calme!

Großartiges Konzept, das in dieser Ecke seinesgleichen sucht. Kaffee vom Feinsten und leckere Zimtschnecken oder Kuchen und belegte Brote. Dazu kann in Ruhe in den vielen ungewöhnlichen Zeitschriften und Büchern gestöbert, oder der Laptop aufgeklappt werden.
