Mauermuseum / Haus am Checkpoint Charlie

Some Unilocalers have confused Checkpoint Charlie with the Museum directly across the Street, I mean Strasse. You don’t need to speak German to enjoy this museum, as just about all the exhibits are in both German and English.
The museum contains numerous artifacts from the Cold War and the partition of Berlin. Some examples are the actual car in which a small person fit into a false gas tank in order to cross over to Freedom. The actual hanglider used by a very intrepid individual to defeat the wall hangs in one room.
There are several photos showing the brutality of the Soviet guards shooting civilians whose only ‘crime’ was to escape communism.
So many exhibits, large and small. Another example is an electronic device of some sort, with tubes, wires, resistors, and other now-​rudimentary components enclosing a small space where one person could be smuggled into West Berlin. The ingenuity is mind-​boggling, as is the human desire for freedom.
Interestingly, and yet not surprisingly, there is an entire room dedicated to Ronald Reagan. No pictures allowed, oddly.
The formation of NATO is clearly and cogently documented in a very significant presentation.
Why not five stars? The presentation and organization of this museum seemed sort of «ad hoc» to me, a work in progress, so to speak. Not as professional as it could be, and certainly not world class in its presentation.
I hope a professional museum curator or historical society can take over this collection of priceless and timeless artifacts, and turn it into a presentation worthy of its subject matter. Because I’m a fan.

A good place to help understand the history of the Berlin Wall. Lots of photos and displays that you can read about in English without renting the audio guide.

I can see why this place doesn’t have the highest reviews, as it is literally just a checkpoint. It’s historically significant though, as during the Cold War, this was the only place where the Soviets and the U.S. physically met. This checkpoint was also the border between East and West Berlin, and if anyone from the western nations wanted to go to Berlin, this was the only way they could do so. The checkpoint has soldiers, but they aren’t real soldiers; in fact, the checkpoint was torn down after the war, but due to tourism, they rebuilt it. The real memorial is the picture of the soldier that’s there. Cool place to see because of its historical significance, but don’t be expecting too much!

Ce musée retrace l’histoire du mur de Berlin et de la séparation de la capitale en deux. Mais pas que… Il y a un étage consacré aux luttes pour la liberté en général. En fait cet endroit est assez bordélique. Il y a des panneaux à lire, des véhicules, des peintures etc. Un joyeux foutoir. Le musée est plutôt sympathique mais un peu cher et fouillis à mon goût. Pas un «must» mais si vous avez le temps allez y.

This has to be the most poorly curated museum I’ve ever been in. After I went, I decided I would never take anyone here, ever. The exhibits are jumbled, and there’s random weird (and not very good) modern art taking up space, and making the place even more cluttered. The time line needs to be clarified, the museum needs a curator (it feels like high school students put this stuff on the walls). There are some interesting things buried in here– but with the great museums of Berlin all around you, why waste your time on this dive? You won’t have time for everything– skip this.

Das Museum ist eigentlich ein Muss für alle Berlin Besucher und Geschichtsinteressierten — wäre da nicht die chaotische Aneinanderreihung von Räumen durch die sich der Besucher ohne Hinweis seinen Weg suchen muss. Richtig schlimm wird es, wenn man sich für 3,50 € den Audioguide leiht: es fehlen ca aller Nummern und man kann daher die Ausführungen nicht den Exponaten oder Tafeln zuordnen. Spart euch daher das Geld! Besser auf eigene Faust die Räume erkunden und sich von den interessanten Exponaten «führen» lassen.
Von mir daher nur 3 Sterne…

Eine große Anhäufung von (zum Teil sehr interessanten) Exponaten, aber leider ohne erkennbaren Zusammenhang oder didaktisch aufbereitete Präsentation. Wollten unseren Kindern die Geschichte der deutschen Teilung vermitteln, aber das war nichts, sorry. Fast 40 Euro für eine vierköpfige Familie, das wars nicht wert… kann mich dem Beitrag von Siegfried M. (13.10.14) komplett anschließen.
Anstelle ausgewogener Information stand häufig die Privatmeinung der Betreiber aus dem vergangenen Jahrhundert im Vordergrund (hey Leute, der Kalte Krieg ist vorbei und die DDR existiert nicht mehr!). Die im Museum angebrachten und mE unpassenden Lobpreisungen auf Axel Springer und Gerhard Löwenthal haben das Maß dann endgültig voll gemacht. Was ausgerechnet diese beiden Herren mit ihren jahrzehntelangen Tiraden zu einer friedlichen Wiedervereinigung beigetragen haben sollen, ist mir nicht klar :(
Kein Vergleich zur genialen Gedenkstätte am Nordbahnhof/​Bernauer Str. (ok, das ist aus Steuergeldern finanziert und nicht privat, aber trotzdem…)

Wa könnte man aus dem Thema und den Exponaten nicht alles herausholen? Ein Stück Geschichte, Schicksale und persönliche Erinnerungen. Und was ist es aktuell? Ein Sammelsurium von Exponaten ohne Ordnung, Struktur und Aussage. Nicht mal einen vernünftigen Rundgang gibt es. In jedem Raum eine neue Zeitskala, neue Themen mit mehr oder weniger Bezug zur Mauer. In einem Raum ist Geschichte von der Flucht mit dem U-​Boot. Fünf Räume weiter steht dann das U-​Boot.
9.November 1989 — was für ein emotionaler Moment für Deutschland und für mich. Warum gibt es da keinen Großbild-​TV wo die Bilder dieses Abends laufen? Vertane Chance!
OK, das Museum ist über Jahrzehnte privat hochgezogen und betrieben worden. Der Platz ist knapp. Alles historisch gewachsen. Aber bitte mal 3 Monate zu machen, ordnen mit Sinn und Verstand, dann ist es vielleicht auch wieder die 12,50 € Eintritt wert.

This museum is way to crowded and the rooms are quite small! At first you want to read all the little info cards but soon you’ll find out that, you wont have time to right them all… There are a lot and a lot of rooms. All that being said there it does have some interesting rooms and it seems like the further you go in to the museum the newer it is. Seeing the pictures and models of how people lived in and escaped from East Berlin, gives you a good picture of what it was like in that era.
I would say that if you have plenty of time in Berlin go check it out… Just «skip» the first few rooms:)

The bad rap this place gets is understandable, but unfounded. First off, let me just state if it’s at all possible for you, go when it is cooler outside. If it’s hot outside, it will be amplified tenfold inside. There is no air conditioning and only a couple ineffective fans. It also gets insanely crowded. But it is still worth it.
This museum provides an in-​depth look at Checkpoint Charlie itself, along with stories of Germans who tried (some succeeded, some failed) to escape from the DDR to the BRD. There are three floors to the museum, and the good thing is as you go further upstairs, it gets less crowded.
There is much dedicated to the wall itself, of course. The main exhibit focuses on the time from the building of the wall itself to its destruction. DDR history is also shown, such as the uprising in 1953. It presents just how divided things were in the East vs. West, and even how this division continues today.
Escape cars are shown to give one an idea of just how desperate people were to flee. A VW Beetle is on display, as well as another car (I cannot remember the make, sorry) that is even smaller. One would have to almost be a contortionist to fit in the trunk, and yet somehow they did. In fact, life-​sized dummies are shown in the trunks to reinforce just how small the trunks were.
There is also an exhibit about the formation of NATO, including actual items used by NATO back in the day. It is quite an interesting look to see how vested the USA was in Germany. Ronald Reagan is somewhat immortalised in an exhibit on him, due to his famous quote to Gorbachev… you know the one. The room almost looks propaganda-​like, showing him as this amazing saviour. There are lots of bumper stickers from his two election campaigns, photos, and even a timeline of his life.
Furthermore, there is a third floor (perhaps 2.5^th floor would make more sense as it’s only at the top of a few steps) that almost no one goes to. If you’re feeling like you can’t make it anymore and you’re so exhausted and hot, go up here. First, either this part has air conditioning or maybe just due to the lack of crowds, the open windows actually help to bring a breeze in. I’m not sure. But in each of the many rooms, movies are shown, some in German, some in English, and some in other languages. Many of these star Ronald Reagan, back when he was an actor. What’s great about this section is you finally have a place to sit, and due to the nature of movies being screened, you don’t feel an obligation to only sit for a moment. Not to mention, absolutely no one goes up there (they’re packed like sardines on the ground floor, the next floor is a little less crowded, and this floor is virtually empty).
The gift shop is great, too. There are of course pieces of the wall for sale, pieces that were specifically at Checkpoint Charlie. Many sizes are available so if you only want to spend a couple Euros, you can still buy one. There is lots of other merchandise to buy… one oddity being a bowl of keychains. At first glance one might assume they’re for Berlin, Germany, and maybe Checkpoint Charlie. You couldn’t be more wrong… they’re cities of various American cities, such as Miami. I have no idea why they’re there but it’s a funny thing to mention. It could be fun to say you bought a South Carolina keychain… in Berlin.
Finally, the signs explaining each item in the museum are bilingual, so if you do not speak German at all or only a little, there is still a way to understand everything. Also, while the ticket counter states you have to pay a fee (I think it’s € 2) to be able to take photographs, here’s the thing. It’s so crowded, and I never saw employees wandering around like in other museums… so you technically don’t have to pay that fee. Granted, ymmv but I didn’t observe employees anywhere but the ticket counter and gift shop, and at no point did anyone ask to see my ticket to see if I’d paid the fee.

Heute ist der 13. August — der Tag des Mauerbaues! Der Tag an dem in Berlin im Jahre 1961 eine Mauer gebaut wurde, die die Stadt 28 Jahre in zwei Teile trennte und an der Menschen ermordet wurden.
Dem Ereignis wurde heute in Berlin gedacht… nur der Berliner Regierende Oberbürgermeister gedenkt offiziell in de Medien diesen Ereignis. Ein Lokalpolitiker widmet sich einsam diesen Erinnerungen…
Traurig!!! Wo sind unsere Regierungsoberhäupter der Bundesrepublik? Wo die hohen Politiker, die obersten Repräsentanten dieses Staates?
Wie gut, dass es in dieser Zeit des Vergessens noch ein Mauer-​Museum in Berlin gibt — das Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.
Ein Glück das hier junge Menschen durch ein Privatmuseum noch die Wahrheit und Realität vermittelt wird — den jungen Menschen von heute so wie mir damals, als ich jung war.
Dieses Museum zeigt anhand von wahren Begebenheiten und echten Ausstellungsstücken, was die DDR mit Menschen machte, die mit dem Land nicht einverstanden waren. Das Museum zeigt auch, warum Menschen diesen Staat verlassen haben oder verlassen mussten und dabei ihr Leben riskierten.
Sehr interessant finde ich auch die Geschichte der Fluchthelfer.
Vielen Dank Frau Alexandra Hildebrandt, Vorsitzende und Direktorin, dass sie die Wahrheit aufrecht erhalten!
13. August — dem Gedenken der Mauertoten und Opfern der Deutschen Teilung

One of the best museums in Berlin. Don’t listen to tourist guides or bus drivers that say it is not worth it. I had some family go to Berlin and I recommended it but decided not to go because their tour guide said not to. Most likely they do not get a commission is why they said that.
It is a very somber museum and you will learn a lot. Many exhibits about the wall, occupation and liberation. You will feel good about visiting this museum and maybe have a better understanding.
As other museum shops go it is about the same, overpriced and not worth it. Don’t be fooled by Berlin artifacts they may not be genuine.
The café prices are overpriced as many museum cafes are.
Good for kids if they understand what they are seeing.
The Checkpoint Charlie itself is just outside and is not really worth it. It has become tacky. The soldiers that stand there are actors and if you want a photo you need to pay a fee.
There is a small exhibit outside about the wall that is worth a look.

Definitely some interesting exhibits, but the most disorganized mess of a museum I’ve ever seen. Definitely not worth € 12.50, unless you’ve seen *everything* else in Berlin. Look at the free museum at Bernauer Str. for more organized accounts instead.

Ich war auf das Mauermuseum sehr gespannt. Aber es war enttäuschend. Die Flut an Informationen in die man geworfen wird, da jeder deutsch– oder englischsprachige Museumsflyer vergriffen war, war so mächtig, dass ich nicht wusste, wo anfangen. Das Museum ist inhaltlich zwar interessant, aber unübersichtlich gestaltet, die Aufmachung altmodisch und darüberhunaus gibt es nur am Ende Sitzplätze. Für ältere Menschen, Schwanger oder auch Kinder echt nicht optimal.
Und es war wirklich teuer. Ich konnte ermäßigt rein (Studentenausweis), aber musste immer noch 9,50 EUR bezahlen. Das ist für diese alten Ausstelungsstücke und die teilweise etwas lieblose Präsentierung einfach viel zu viel.
Insgesamt kann ich es leider nicht empfehlen. Als Alternative dazu lohnt sich allerdings die Mauer-​Gedenkstätte!

Nach wie vor inhaltlich ein tolles Museum mit Gänsehaut-​Effekt. Was aber schon auffällt ist, dass die Texttafeln und Exponate meist in sehr schlechtem Zustand sind. Hier müsste dringen mal wieder investiert werden. Extrem nervig und unengagiert war der Mitarbeiter an der Kasse. Erst nach dem Zahlen merkten wir, dass wir eigentlich Rabatt bekommen hätten. Er meinte, dass man da «eigentlich» nix mehr ändern könne. So weit so gut. Allerdings war zu dem Zeitpunkt an der Kasse wirklich gar nichts los, wir waren die einzigen Gäste. Auf nochmaliges Nachfragen erhielten wir dann nur ein Schulterzucken und die Antwort, dass er nun nichts mehr ändern könne. Wir betraten leicht genervt das Museum, und er beschäftigte sich in der nach wie vor leeren Eingangshalle weiter lieber mit seiner Tageszeitung statt mit uns. Viel Lust hatte er wohl nicht auf seinen Job.

When you walk in you are definitely surprised at how small the place is but it’s walls are covered from top to bottom with information. There is so much to read that if you go on a busy day you might feel rushed but just take your time and make your way through at your own pace and get your money’s worth. The real accounts of escapes are almost unbelievable. There are many rooms and no direct path so people walk in all directions so you are bound to bump into someone in a tiny doorway or hallway. Picture a room covered from top to bottom with clippings of newspaper articles and that is what you get here. If you take the chance to read everything you will see that it is organized by section. I enjoyed it and thought that it gave me a much better idea of what the residents of Berlin went through back then.

Personally, I loved museum and thought that this was the best thing about the visit to Checkpoint Charlie. I learnt a lot about the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the confrontations of East vs West. As a history addict, I was in heaven!
Allow a LOT of time to look around. There is a mass of information to read and take in. Luckily it wasn’t too busy when we were there — I imagine that if it were packed with people it may be a little difficult to enjoy fully. For me though, all of the
One word of warning — when we were there it was a very, very, hot day and the museum reached boiling point! Either go when it’s cooler or bring a hand fan or something.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this museum and would recommend it to anybody who loves their history. Just expect to do a lot of reading!

The museum is horribly organized and needs updating. It seems like they are working on it as some boards were updated but other items were oddly placed/​kept. For instance, on painting about 1.5 meters high is on a wall that faces a wall only two feet away so you cannot really see the painting. There are lots of small areas to visit but the arrangement is awkward. Interesting sections, everything is in four languages including English, and lots of photos. If you have no background knowledge then the museum may be confusing but if you know a little about the Cold War then you will be fine. I liked it and learned a little. If you want to see a lot of the museum, then allot 3 – 4 hours. I spent about 1.5 and only got through ½ the museum.

Kitsch, mais vous y êtes, vous êtes bien à Checkpoint Charlie plus de 20 ans après la chute du mur. La collection est hétéroclite, parfois même hors sujet mais la visite n’est pas désagréable, tout le contraire.

Ce musée est une ineptie. Il n’y a que d’énormes panneaux de textes et de photos nous racontant la guerre froide.
On oscille entre anecdotes et faits historiques.
Je regrette qu’il n’y ait vraiment pas d’effort pédagogique. Au bout de deux salles je n’avais plus le courage de lire leur panneaux d’exposé de classe de 6ème…
C’est vraiment dommage car les lieux sont chargés d’histoire.
Sinon l’accueil a été sympa puisque la fille nous a expliqué que l’audio guide n’était pas super utile…
En conclusion né perdez pas votre temps en vous rendant dans cet endroit.

Bei der langen Nacht der Museen, hatten wir hier einen Abstecher gemacht, wie andere auch. Es war gut voll. Bin es ist groß man denkt es geht nicht mehr weiter, indem dann ist man wieder in einem anderen Raum. Originale Flucht Mittel sind wohl der Höhepunkt. Es erzähl die Geschichte vom kalten Krieg
Werbung das mag ist hier richtig.

Chaotic tourist trap. It’s a shame because with a good curator, this museum could be a valuable source of information about the wall. Instead, the collection is organized in a willy nilly way, like a PowerPoint presentation designed by kindergartners. It’s not worth the price of admission.

Private Museum on Checkpoint Charlie. never gets updated
I suppose most visitors end up going and one visit is OK. The most interesting displays are the escape contraptions. Many other displays are simply written stories of escape. The museum doesn’t seem to have changed in 15 years so if you’ve been befroe, don’t bother going again. Also, don’t go on hot days as it’s not airconditioned and dreadfuiully hot. You’d think that at EUR12 a pop with millions of tourists filtering throgh that they’d be able to rig up some AC.

Mir gefällt das privat geführte Museum, denn hier gibt es spannende Geschichten rund um den Checkpoint Charlie und die vielfältigen Fluchtversuche zu sehen. Der Einfallsreichtum ist einfach sehenswert und gut aufbereitet. Ein Stern mehr, weil es der Stadt ja seit Jahren nicht gelingt, hier ein öffentliches, angemessenes Angebot für diesen Platz zu bereiten
Tipp: Auch an Montagen geöffnet, wenn die meisten staatlichen Museen geschlossen haben.

Die Ausstellung ist super, aber viel zu viel Plakate, die man lesen muss. Deswegen gibt es immer wieder Menschenansammlungen von einzelnen Plakaten. Der Eintritt ist recht hoch. Mit der Berlin Welcome Card gibt es 25% Rabatt.

Jam packed with real life accounts of people whose lives were impacted by the wall, this museum is definitely worth spending a couple of hours in (if only to get your money’s worth as it’s on the steeper end of the scale).
Bit cramped, and you can’t take photos, so it isn’t on my list of favourite museums in Berlin, but it’s still one to see.

Beim letzten Besuch Berlins waren wir in diesem Museum. Der Eintritt ist sicher kein Pappenstiel aber ich finde er lohnt sich auf jedenfall. Hier läßt sich deutsche Geschichte erleben und spüren. Teilweise ist man von den ganzen Details und Geschichten schon fast erschlagen.

Von der Thematik her nach wie vor ein wichtiges Haus mit guten Informationen und guten Exponaten (z.B. Original-​Fluchtgeräten). Der Eintrittspreis hält sich meines Erachtens auch noch im Rahmen. Jetzt aber die Kritikpunkte:
— die Räume sind zum Teil einfach überladen und haben mit heutiger Präsentation nichts mehr zu tun
— Texttafeln aus den 60er Jahren mögen zwar historisch interessant sein, sind aber für den heutigen Museumsbesucher eine Zumutung
— bei den Texttafeln gibt es nicht einmal eine einheitliche Reihenfolge der Sprachen
— insgesamt wirkt das Haus eher unstrukturiert und überladen
— durch die Überladung der Räume ist dort z.T. kaum ein Durchkommen bzw. man kann nichts näher betrachten, weil sich die Leute fast schon stapeln
Von der Art und Weise der Präsentation leider das schlechteste Museum, das ich seit Jahren gesehen habe. Und dies an einer Stelle, wo wirklich Geschichte stattfand. Schade.

Way too much text. No logical flow. One second you’re reading about WWII, Berlin Wall, then it’s on to Reagan, Gandhi, and the space shuttle.
It’s too bad bc the presentation of the material could have made all the difference.
Pray you’re not trapped in here during a fire. The 2^nd floor is a maze.

This looks like a small unassuming museum. It even starts off really slow with each little topic having paragraphs of information post. However, this museum goes on and on. The amount of information and things to learn about is really impressive.
This is definitely not a museum that has the refinement that you are used to and could really use a remake. But, if you really want to spend time learning and seeing what the whole era was like, this is definitely a museum to check out.

Overall: a lot information in too little space.
I felt pressured to keep walking without reading fully because people behind me were waiting or could not get by because of all the stuff that was there. They should try to get more space (but its a very expensive street so that’s doubtful) or convert some of the shop space to the museum. Really interesting stuff, so I wish I had more time to spend looking at it.
Most expensive museum I went to in Berlin as well at just over 9 (for a student).
I’m not a fan of museums that don’t let you take pictures either. I understand no flash photography, but no photos at all? I still take them…

Best museum in Berlin. Especially to Americans and others who lived through the cold war.
The first time I went, I spent almost a day there, because I was fascinated by it so much. There are great historic exhibits, and totally fascinating escape vehicles and stories.
They have an exhibit that replays Reagan’s speech at the Brandenburg gates and it’s amazing moving to see that and recall it from my youth. It’s only 25 years ago, but it just seems like such a distant memory.
I actually ended up coming back a second day.
This is the must-​see place for me in Berlin.

For such a fascinating piece of 20^th-​century history, you would think there would be a classier, more exalted way to exhibit all the invaluable Cold War memorabilia and information housed in this ramshackle building. After all, the Kennedy Museum at Parisier Platz probably has only a quarter of the inventory this museum has, but the setting over there is all polished marble and open spaces. This overly dense museum here feels more like an over-​packed thrift shop in the middle of a half-​off fire sale with hordes of tourists rubbing up against each other… and not in a good way.
The numerous exhibits review the tense political and military events leading up to the construction of the Berlin Wall by displaying the tools and devices, recordings, documents and photographs from that dark period. A huge part of the museum is devoted to how the East Germans escaped to the West — whether by way of a hot-​air balloon, a chairlift, a compact car like a Trabant or a Volkswagen, or even a miniature submarine (see photos). The museum also displays photographs and artwork covering human rights violations that have been occurring around the world since the wall was constructed.
Be forewarned that the hop-​on, hop-​off buses come frequently and stop right in front, so it’s hard to avoid the crowds that inevitably gather in the building. It’s probably most optimal to come when they first open or just before they close if you want to spend your time as efficiently as possible. There is an adjacent café if you need a bottle of water or simply a place just to rest your feet from climbing up and down all those tiny stairs that connect the rooms. The admission is a bit high at 12.50 Euros, but I would consider this to be Berlin’s must-​see historical museum… and I’m taking into account the currywurst museum just around the corner from here.

Ich kann daher nur abraten!

Sehr Informativ zur Geschichte der MAUER. Alles was dazu gehörte wird behandelt. Leider sind die Räume sehr schlecht belüftet oder Klimatisiert. Sehr Stckige Luft und sehr WARM. Schade das geht doch besser.
Und Fotografieren VERBOTEN??? Was hat das für ein sinn…

Musée intéressant mais qui manqué terriblement de structuration: pas de classement thématique ni chronologique, on évolue de salle en salle où s’accumulent ça et là témoignages, rappels historiques, exemples d’évasion, informations sur le mur, puis à nouveau des témoignages de la vie sous la dictature etc. Ça laisse un sentiment assez désagréable d’ inachevé, on reste sur sa faim, dommage car il y a une richesse incroyable (documentation, objets). Autre point négatif: les traductions en français sont déplorables ! Vu le prix du billet d’entrée, on aurait pu s attendre à une meilleure qualité des supports.

Das Thema DDR-​Mauer wird spannend und anschaulich vermittelt. Interessant sind sicherlich auch die Fluchtversuche bzw –Erfolge, die mit zahlreichen Ausstellungsstücken erzählt werden. Jedoch ist der Preis mit 12,50EUR pro Person recht hoch zumal man nicht ewig im Museum verweilt.

Tolles Museum! Ein Muss für jeden Berlin Besucher und Berliner.
Wir haben uns viel Zeit gelassen um wirklich alles einzusaugen und richtig unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
Am besten und interessantesten fand ich die Darstellungen über die Fluchtversuche der DDR-​Bürger. Wow, echt freaky… welch kuriosen und einfallsreichen Ideen die damals ausgeklügelt haben… Hut ab!
Teilweise machte mich die Tour echt traurig und natürlich auch nachdenklich. Deshalb finde ich es super cool und wichtig, dass es dieses Museum gibt und die Geschichte nüchtern wiedergegeben und mit nackten, wahren Fakten dargestellt und erzählt wird.

Checkpoint Charlie was one of those spots where East and West Berlin met back in the Cold War. So, once upon a time, Russian and American soldiers got to stare each other down right here. It’s a great gimmick and makes for a nice photo, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to venture here.
The army checkpoint is still there, but it mobbed with tourists and Arabs in faux US military gear (in order to sell pictures with a «GI») so the entire space is hard to appreciate. Also the museum felt like an excuse to sell cold war related merchandise rather than educate tourists.

Have visited this, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, twice — once in 1994 (shortly after the Berlin Wall fell) and again last month with the family. I’m not sure it changed much in the intervening 16 years.
I’m glad the museum exists, but I can’t help wishing there was a lot more to it. After all, this was basically ground zero in the Cold War — and therefore center of the geo-​political world — for several decades.
I’d describe the museum itself as a half-​step above home-​made — sort of what you would get if you donated a large house and took a couple months to put together exhibits yourself. We also happened to visit on a very hot day and it was stifling inside.
Nonetheless, my kids did enjoy learning about some of the daring East-​West escapes that are featured here, and it provided a quick but interesting way to help them understand the related history. We probably spent an hour here in total.

Pareil que Ludocame, c’est un des musées berlinois que j’ai le moins apprécié.
L’entrée est cher, le musée vieux et il y a trop de documents pour pas assez d’informations. J’ai plus appris avec wikipédia sur le mur que dans ce musée, quel comble !
Certes, l’exposition est entièrement billingue, mais les pancartes en anglais sont toutes petites et né donnent pas du tout envie de lire.
Je conseille aux visiteurs du mur de plutôt aller aux alentours du checkpoint et de lire les pancartes (gratuites elles: P), ou encore de partir à la recherché des bouts de murs restants (par exemple vers la Nordbahnof !).

Der Check-​Point Charlie ist immer noch einer der größten touristischen Anzehungspunkte Berlins. Nirgendwo vereint sich die Teilungsgechichte so dicht auf einen Ort wie an der Kochstraße. Das Haus ist mit seinem Museum die ganze Woche über von Besuchern bevölkert. Das Highlight sind wahrscheinlich die regelmäßig vor dem Grenzpostenhäuschen posierenden als Soldaten verkleidete Darsteller, die gegen eine Gebühr von 5 Euro zu einem Foto zur Verfügng stehen.
Die ganze untere Friedrichsstraße hat sich in den letzten Jahren sehr gewandelt. Seit neuestem ist McDonalds in den ehemaligen Food Court eingezogen, wo früher ein Chinese, ein Döner, ein Italiener und Subway zusammen unter einem Dach gefercht waren.

Als Wahlberliner war ich schon ziemlich überrascht, als ich neulich den Weg der U6 mal ausnahmsweise zu Fuß hinlegte, und an der Haltestelle Friedrichstrasse vorbei kam. Jetzt war klar war um die Station auch Checkpoint Charlie heißt.
Das hier mal ein Grenzübergang war hatte ich mir schon gedacht, aber das hier ein amerikanischer Soldat symbolisch am Wachtposten steht war mir neu. Das Dieser gerade von einem weiteren Soldaten Café aus dem Starbucks gegenüber gebracht bekam, machte die Angelegenheit noch symbolischer.
Ich ging neugierig in das Museum hinein und las ein wenig in der Info-​Broschüre, die ich mir im Empfangsbereich schnappte, ehe ich tiefer ins Haus am Checkpoint Charlie eintauchte.
Die Filmdokumentationen erregten meine Aufmerksamkeit, und so verbrachte ich die meiste Zeit im Kinobereich, und schaute mir die unwirklichen Aufnahmen von Fluchtversuchen aus der DDR, und auch sogar von Gandhi an.
Viel interessanter Input, kann ich nur weiter empfehlen. Filmvorführungen sind täglich von 9 bis 22 Uhr.

Der Eintritt ist selbst beim Gruppensonderpreis noch sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig. Wenn man bedenkt, dass man mit einer Schülergruppe direkt am Kudamm im Story of Berlin 4 Euro pro Person plus Freikarte für Lehrkraft zahlt. Und dazu kommt das Fotografierverbot. Allgemeinbildung sollte nicht so teuer angeboten werden.
Rausgerissen hat das Ganze der Zeitzeuge. Rainer Schubert. Er hat so authentisch auf Englisch sein Leben geschildert und so eindringlich das Wirken des Stasi beschrieben, dass meine Austauschschüler ihn zum Highlight unseres 4tägigen Aufenthaltes gekürt haben.
Aufgrund des unverhältnismäßig hohen Eintrttspreises nur 3 Sterne — 6 Sterne für den Zeitzeugen Minus 1 für Fotoverbot macht 3 in der Gesamtwertung.
Woher der NAme Checkpoint Charlie kommt, weiß ja jeder — ich schreib es noch mal auf: Es war der dritte Kontrollpunkt und nach dem Funkalphabet (korrigiert dank Vilmoskörte) folgt auf Alpha und Bravo als Drittes Charlie.

Rund um den ehemaligen Grenzübergang am Checkpoint Charlie sind große Gedenktafeln an die Wirklichkeit des Eisernen Vorhangs, der Berliner Mauer und den (gar nicht immer nur) kalten Krieg aufgestellt.
Fern von jeder Ostalgie wird hier die Erinnerung an die Opfer der SED-​Diktatur wachgehalten. Man darf nie vergessen, daß an dieser Grenze richtige Wachsoldaten mit scharfer Munition auf richtige Zivilisten geschossen haben (teils mit tödlichem Ausgang) und daß diese Menschen nichts anderes wollten, als von ihrem Menschenrecht auf Freiheit Gebrauch machen.
Aber man muß gar nicht bis zu den Erschossenen gehen: es reicht, sich daran zu erinnern, daß man die Verwandten nicht sehen konnte, ohne eine entwürdigende Prozedur durchzumachen, daß man Eintritt ins sozialistische Paradies zahlen mußte (Zwangsumtausch) und daß so manches liebevoll gepackte Paket von den Stasi-​Schergen entwendet oder unterschlagen wurde.
Gute alte Zeit? Nein, danke!

Le musée du mur de Checkpoint Charlie contient une exposition permanente sur l’histoire du mur de Berlin ainsi que divers témoignages. Sont exposés, entre autres, différents objets et moyens utilisés par les fugitifs et leurs passeurs.
Pour être honnête, c le musée de berlin que g le moins aimé: un peu cher, car il est financé uniquement par des fonds privés.
Le Checkpoint Charlie et ses alentours, sont à voirle musée un peu moins.

Le musée pittoresque d’un passé heureusement passé
Berlin a été divisé en deux pendant près d’un demi-​siècle, et le rideau de fer y fut matérialisé par le fameux mur de 1961 à 1989, suscitant des tentatives d’évasion rocambolesques ou désespérées de la part des est-​allemands… Le musée Am Checkpoint Charlie était jadis situé très près du mur, il est maintenant au sud du centre de Berlin, en une rue qui semble désormais banale, il rappelle de façon aussi documentée qu’amusante ce qui s’est passé jadis, avec notamment une voiture truquée pour laisser un réduit à un clandestin ! La visite est sympathique, d’autant plus désormais que tout cela est de l’histoire ancienne…

Un peu d’histoire
Etant passé par ce point alors que le mur existait encore on a du mal à reconnaître les lieux. Le musée est très intéressant et montre bien le calvaire que vivait des familles séparées pendant tant d’année.

Un musée à voir !
Passer par Berlin sans voir ce musée serait vraiment dommage. On y découvre les moyens inventés pour franchir le mur, l’histoire est retracée… Un musée qui donne plus d’idées sur ce qui a pu se passer, il y a quelques années…

Superbe et marquant
En sortant du musée, on comprend enfin comment était la vie pendant la division de Berlin. Un musée qui né peut pas laisser de marbre.

Checkpoint Charlie
Toute l’histoire de l’ancien mur est retracée dans ce musée et présentée par des photos et des projections de films. Le musée se situe à l’endroit qui séparait l’Est de l’Ouest.
