Outside seating without reservation possible. The Saint Jacques were really good. Weird presentation of the oysters though.

[Disclaimer: Being a newcomer to Fonty and France, coming from Toronto, Canada, I wasn’t sure what to expect from from restaurants over here, so take that into account when reading this] France, a place where wine is abundant and pastries and bread are fantastic. Bistro Sud was the first restaurant I went to in Fonty and it was a good experience, though I won’t say great. With a nice patio, it’s a good place to sit and have a drink and food in warmer weather. The steak I ordered(with foie gras) was good, but a tad overcooked(which is surprising given that French tend to undercook beef). I ordered medium rare but it came out a bit more medium, maybe it’s my poor French skills, I’ll need to work on that. The burger though looked good, and was confirmed by my friends as actually being good. The salads looked appetizing as well. If you go, I suggest you pass on the steak and go for the burger or salad. Prices ranged from low teens(for the burger) to the mid 20s, which(after conversion to USD or CAD) seems expensive, but that seems to be the norm around these parts(I seriously underestimated this in my student budget!) Whether you’re passing by to see the Château, or living here as a student or otherwise, Bistro Sud is a good choice in the«downtown» Fonty area. I’ll be back there as the school year goes on, so I’ll be sure to update.

I could never tire of raving about French oysters and French salads! Bistrot Sud was yet another stellar example. The oysters came on a chilly ice bed, surrounded by the usual red-wine vinegar and shallot, lemon wedges and salted butter to spread on the excellent baguette. Our salads were both incredible. Mine came with half a pound of meltingly-fresh slices of mozzarella cheese, drizzled with pesto sauce; neat piles of roasted pepper, grilled eggplant and zucchini; tender, marinated artichoke hearts; and a mountain of fresh greens, lightly kissed with a pungent vinaigrette. They called this«mozzarella salad.» My husband ordered the Ceasar salad, which was also woefully understated on the menu. Romaine lettuce, shaved Parmesan, croutons and a garlicky dressing were nods to the name, but he also enjoyed marinated grilled chicken breast, dried tomatoes and plums and chopped nuts. He was sad he couldn’t finish it all! Prices were more than reasonable(6 – 8 euros for an apertif or half a dozen oysters and 13 for each of their stunningly delicious salads.) The atmosphere is much more relaxed in this suburban town than in the heart of the city, and it was a nice break from the hubbub downtown. Our servers were helpful, friendly and professional, and the other diners provided a pleasant backdrop of conversation(and a tiny friendly dog with whom we made friends, mysteriously, just after our food arrived!)
