The salad bar wasn’t that good and I had to ask twice for the waitress to fill the empty bowls. But my à la carte lunch option smoked salmon with roast sweet potato slices, fresh cooked spinach, half sun dried tomatoes, red onion slices, lime-coriander mayo and a fresh lime slice on the side was excellent. The salmon was moist and clearly self aasmoked, not from package. There was the right amount of salt in the food. Vegetables were fresh and delicious. Only the mayo should have had stronger taste of lime and coriander. My friends also praised their steaks. Coffee or tea was included in lunch and the salad bar for starters as well.

Let’s face it– real Mexican food in Finland is a long way off. Even so, I keep the faith and try a «Mexican» place almost every time I come here. Maya definitely passed the quality test on rhe caipirinha and the frozen strawberry margarita. The slushy ice in the marg was perfect and since we were here during strawberry season, it tasted like fresh strawberries(mansikka to the initiated!), real sugar and pretty good tequila for the northland. The caipirinha was *BOOM!* alcohol flavored(my favorite!) and full of tasty mulled lime wedges. We ordered a plate of 2 tacos which, though tasty for what they were(rye shells, cabbage-like greens, tiny tomato pieces, beef, etc) they were nothing like what would be found on a plate closer to the Mexican border(such as here in Michigan!). One day in Finland there may be authentic Tex-Mex or real Mex food: actual corn tortillas, soft doubled wheat tortilla tacos filled with onions, cilantro, beef or chicken. Possibly with shredded cheddar cheese. Endless baskets of corn tortilla chips fried in hot peanut oil, salsa and pico de gallo, really simple, chunky home made guac and Mexican music in the background. Until then, you take what you can get in this fast-integrating culture of Finland.

Really nice change of pace in Helsinki! I ordered the swordfish and it was nicely prepared. Ask for it less than medium as I did and it was overdone. Device was friendly and as usual tolerant of my English. Margarita was a bit weak but still good. I’ll be back to try more of the menu next time!

I have to revise my previous review. My co-workers talked me into trying Maya again. I had their lunch special today(roast pork over rice with veggies) and it was really quite good. Perhaps I was unlucky the first time or maybe it’s best to stick with their daily lunch specials rather than ordering off the menu, or maybe I just picked something from the menu that wasn’t so great.

Having dined here a few times this review is long overdue. All of my visits to Maya have been enjoyable. Each time I’ve dined here it has been for dinner. The service is always superb; attentive without over doing it. The food is always fresh and flavorful. The menu contains a decent variety of entrees including all numerous types of protein(chicken, fish, beef, pork, etc). The meal portions are sized just right; large enough to fill me up without feeling stuffed afterwards. On my most recent visit I had the grilled salmon which came with some mixed veggies and roasted sweet potatoes. Needless to say, it was very tasty. The salmon was fresh and grilled to perfection. If you’re looking for a great flavorful food and great service, look no further. Maya is the place for you. I will definitely return whenever I’m in Helsinki.

I’ve been living in Helsinki for nearly 14 years and going to Maya has never crossed my mind until one day. I was really surprised by the quality of the food and amount of it. Lunch for only 9+ euros, including soup, salad and main course. Where else can you get quality and cheap these days?! Of course, if you are too picky, then you should go somewhere else. The service has always been friendly as well. I have also tried À la carte menu: paellas, tortizzas, beef and my favourite — escargots al chipotle! I would definitely recommend Maya Bar & Grill to everyone who enjoys spicy and tasty food.

I have had mixed experiences at this restaurant — sometimes good, sometimes disappointing. so it is hard to give an overall recommendation. this place is pretty popular with the locals and usually pretty crowded, so it is important to make a reservation.
