Kino Engel is one of the last remaining alternative cinemas in Helsinki. Let me state that again, as far as films go, in the capital city of Finland, there are not many places to see anything that departs from the Hollywood agenda. Well, good thing is that Kino Engel is a lovely little cinema fairly centrally located(in between the cathedral and the harbour) and you can find many different films available there. A challenge for a non-Finnish speaker might be that most films are in all different languages — not always in English — and they are subtitled for the most part only in Finnish and Swedish(various film festivals are the exceptions to this rule). The atmosphere is such, that it makes films a bit better. Perhaps the chairs aren’t state of the art, but isn’t that part of the experience. During summer time Kino Engel shows films also on its court yard outside and that is to be recommended as well.
