I’m very excited to be writing the first English review for Toldbod Bodega, because I think it definitely deserves a lot of attention. It’s some random place I found on Unilocal, but my meal, my experience, was top notch – one of my favorites in the world, and certainly the best in Copenhagen. We ended up eating here because it was a Sunday, and not everything was open, and we weren’t starving and were willing to walk a little bit up toward Kastellet before finding food. Unilocal told me this would be a good option, and assured me they were open, but I was a little skeptical before walking in. However, from the first moment, I was swelling with that secret pride I get when I use the Unilocal app and totally nail a great restaurant that otherwise might not have been enjoyed. The decorations are amazing: fairy lights on branches, old fashioned diner hanging lamps, and tons of color and ornaments everywhere. Classy modern dining sets and table settings, but old fashioned decorations and the quaintest bathrooms I’ve seen in ages. This seems to have formerly been a traditional pub, but is now a great restaurant. I had the egg and shrimp salad, which was absolutely delectable. I ate the caviar, even! I couldn’t get enough, though I’ll admit that I ate until I was too full, and didn’t leave any behind. I also tried the chicken with cream sauce and bacon, and that was great too, though much heavier flavors. I loved how light and refreshing my egg and shrimp was. I also had the elderweiss soda, which was very sweet but a nice compliment to the salty flavors I had in my meal. Our server, like most I interacted with, had wonderful English, and great serving skills, despite the fact that she was managing the entire restaurant herself. All in all, this would be the place I’d say you can’t miss. Everyone goes to the Little Mermaid, and this is a very short walk away. Trust me, you’ll have a surprisingly lovely meal, and the surprise makes it all the better.

I absolutely adored this place. This is a quaint old restaurant with real history and charm. Clearly the regulars love it, and the owners are proud. Like many places in Copenhagen, it is a delightful mixture of the impeccably upright and the slightly eccentric. Serving entirely classical, traditional Danish food, the herring and pork dishes are outstanding, as are the sweets. The walls are decorated with posters of artists, actors, plays, concerts and newspaper cuttings going back decades. Service is a little austere — even severe — but it makes the occasional smile more welcome. Very strongly recommended.
