We took an über from Bellavista to Cousiño Macul, and we’re really impressed to find such a beautiful winery so close to downtown Santiago. We were in a small group of mixed English and Spanish speakers and our tour guide took the time to explain the history, the harvest, and the process of fermentation. They gave us three generous pours of their cheaper wines at the end of the tour, and then just because our host liked us we received a taste of the Grand Reserva and Finis Terrae. After the tour we bought a glass of Lota and enjoyed walking around the beautiful scenery before catching an über back to Bellas Artes.

This vineyard is great for anyone just passing through Chile and doesn’t have time to hit any of the major wine regions. It is located in the Maipo Valley and you can take the metro and a short taxi ride to get there. The tours are reasonably priced and you get to walk through the vineyard and into the grape sorting room where you can taste the different grapes. You will learn all about the Cousino family and you get to see the whole process of how the wine is made. Explore the many parts of both the vineyard and the productivity rooms. I really enjoy their room that shows how wine was made originally. They have all the old machines and explain the full process. This vineyard is a great place for a short get away from the the smoggy busy streets of Santiago. The best part of course is getting to try the wine. They also have selected bottles available for purchase to take home with you.

This is a perfect tourist option if you are traveling but either feeling a little lazy and don’t want to go too far or are short on time but would still like to experience the tours and tastings of Chilean wine. Plus, if you are a romantic, it is a great date spot. This is one of my go-to places where I take friends who visit. This viña and the experience cant be beat. I even enjoyed it more than some tours outside of Santiago such as Concha y Toro and Viña Casas del Bosque(although their lunch was amazing). When you start arriving to Viña Macul you almost forget you are still in a bustling metropolis. The vineyard is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood filled with lush forest-like vegetation. When you arrive, you see horses playing and can automatically feel the history that surrounds you. What I like most about this vineyard has to be their history(along with their Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon). Since 1564, Viña Macul has been producing delicious wine but it wasn’t until 1873 when Isidora Goyenechea became the head of the viña that they started making history. Isidora Goyenechea was a baddass(she is highly respected in Chile, known to be one of the first woman to be in charge of such a large business as she was not only a main player in the wine industry but also in the Coal industry and she was the first to install a hydroelectric plant in Chile). When you go on the tour they will tell you all about the amazing stuff she did for the vineyard and you will get to see all the different ways they used to make the wine up until today. Tips: Getting there: It’s a 2.25km walk or a quick taxi ride from metro Quilin(purple line). Cost: between 9 mil and 18 mil I Suggest calling at least one day in advance in order to get a specific language guide.
