Wasn’t that impressed. Service was decent. Isn’t there at least one really good Korean restaurant in the Winnipeg area? I had to ask my dining companion, is this North Korean or South Korean? This is a joke, referring to the scant portions N. Koreans are depicted as existing on in Japanese media coverage of hunger and hard times in North Korea, a regular feature of the nightly news(at one time). Instead of thinly-sliced, premium restaurant quality slices of pork, and a cast iron circular grill with a funnel that catches the juices from the fat and takes them to the center, where they mix with the korean BBQ sauce and other flavours, we received a common electric frying unit. Luckily there was enough fat in the pork that it didn’t stick after cooking several minutes. The pork had no flavour. The number of slices totalled five or six, and looked like they came from the back of the pig. These were tough, grizzly cuts of pork. Long strips the size of a thick cut of bacon, but without any of the corresponding flavour. They needed to be marinated or something, prior to cooking. And be a much better cut. Kitchen shears were supplied to cut these strips into chopstick sized pieces. And the portions were meager. Hence the ‘is this a North Korean restaurant?’. lol. My friends dish was also on the small side. Normally it is served in a hefty cast-iron bowl, on top of a wooden plate. The cast iron is hot. This was a porcelain bowl, with a larger volume, and smaller contents. Again, making the serving look meagre, which it already was. Appetizer sides were good. The kimchi was mild. Price was decent, although I wish the kitchen would charge more and deliver an authetic korean experience. There are too many korean/sushi restaurants that do not just focus on korean. We picked this one because it didn’t seem like it was going to comprimise as much, or have too much split focus. The environs were dingy: rough neighborhood, building falling apart, modest interior — all the things to look for in a classic underdog(no pun intrended) korean restaurant. The menu was also scant: no raw duck or beef to cook at the table. No marinated raw beef to serve. If this had four out of five for korean restaurants in Unilocal Winnipeg and 4.5÷5 in Google, there must not be that many korean reviewers on here, and people staying in Winnipeg must not travel and get some better selections to compare it too.
