I attended Kennedy High School, right next door to Jackson Park… and we frequently strolled the grounds during lunch break and/or when we cut class. At that time, the main draw was the Rose Gardens and the Lancaster bomber(which has been replaced by a Spitfire). It is a place of stillness close to the core of Windsor. I love strolling the grounds during the spring, when new growth suddenly pops above the ground, and in the fall when the trees change from green to reds, oranges and Browns. Kudos to Windsor Parks Department for maintaining the park.

I have already let the cat out of the bag about this coveted gem in a discussions’ thread so…(in for a penny, in for a pound!)…here goes: This is the park that you go to when you when you want to decompress from all of the built up stresses you managed to accumulate throughout the day, week, month or year. Mother Nature is the doctor and she has the cure. Simply by walking on the paths of QEII’s Sunken Gardens, you are effectively transported to another world of beauty, serenity, harmony and wonder. You will note that your breathing has become slow and deliberate as you take in the flowering fragrances. Your walking pace slows too as you afford the necessary time to observe the myriad of focal interests. The sounds of water from the broad central fountain is the perfect backdrop to this experience. The monuments present moments of reflection and appreciation. This is the purpose behind the gardens’ design; to immerse you in peace and tranquility. When you make your way up the stairway to the Boer War Monument, south of the fountain, you can continue around the structure to reveal an awesome sight; replicas of a World War II Hurricane and Spitfire loom large. To the south of the planes are cricket playing fields. Surrounding the gardens, there are picnic tables amongst tall trees. This is a place that is too good not to share. This is what I’ve done and I hope you do the same.(Even if it is just with your close friends or family.)
