You’ll know you’ve found the place when upon entering you are greeted by a Siberian dance party blasting from a tv circa 1980 you’ll see mounted in the corner of the tiny store. It’s a cute little fruit and veg stand that also sells deli goods, nanaimo bars, other«squares» and frozen perogies(not so good to those spoiled with authenticity, apparently). If truth be told, I didn’t notice the bread, tho. While waiting in the always-busy-counter-lines, you can peruse the various business cards and even a home-published children’s book offered up by the local White Rockians.(Yes, I just made that term up.) I was disappointed to learn they had no ripe avocados while on a recent visit and having the sudden urge to make guacamole. No matter; the place is always packed and the service is friendly. You can find pretty much anything else here which is impressive considering it’s about 1⁄3 size of any comparable city place. It’s just another little shop that gives WR – specifically, Johnston Road – its charm, and truthfully, why can’t our fruit and veg. stands in Vancouver be this friendly? Maybe then I’d make the effort to return to the ones in my ‘hood as often as I seem to end up here.
