Specialties
The Atwater Library and Computer Centre is western downtown Montréal’s community library, digital learning centre and community meeting place. We are a private, non-profit institution, with a history dating back to 1828.
We have deep roots in the past of Montréal, yet we are a modern, innnovative community resource centre. More than just books, we offer courses and workshops to help young and old master technology in the digital age, a state-of-the art computer centre, literary and educational events, meeting space for community groups, and much more.
We’re located in a national historic site officially known as the Atwater Library of the Mechanics’ Institute, near the corner of Atwater Avenue and Ste. Catherine Street.
History
Established in 1828.
The Atwater Library traces its origins back to 1828, when the first mechanics’ institute established in continental British North America was formed in Montréal. Today, with its official name, the Atwater Library and Computer Centre, it is the sole survivor of the many mechanics’ institutes established in Canada in the 19th century. The rest were either closed or merged into public library systems. The Atwater Library and Computer Centre carries on proudly, aware of its traditions, but focused on the future.
