Make sure you park at the«cypress mountain hollyburn Nordic» parking lot where they offer cross country skiing and NOT the usual cypress bowl area that most people go to and then follow the power lines. You can also access the trail from the cypress bowl parking lot but that part of the trail is not as clear and nice as the other one.

I went snowshoeing here on the weekend and absolutely loved it! As mentioned, it’s operated my BC Parks and therefore free(squee!) It was beautiful and a great workout. Working on my buns of steel(might take a few more gos). The city views are stunning on a clear day. And the best part? Sliding down on garbage bags all the way down the mountain. Very hobo-chic if I do say so myself!

Not exactly a best kept secret with the crowds that can be found here on the weekend but definitely no worse than the Grouse Grind in the summer months! What I do love about Hollyburn is that it can be a quick summit(1.5 hrs tops) in snowshoes(or not sometimes), gorgeous views at the top and you can be home by noon. In the summer it’s even faster and less busy and between seasons, be sure to bring a garbage bag and slide all the way down! Definitely a quick and easy way to get an outdoor fix without committing to a long drive or hike.

A sky full of sun, alpine blueberries galore and a solid path(minus the bushwacking«shortcuts») made a hike up Hollyburn Mountain the best way to say farewell to the summertime. The final destination makes every little slip or muddy shoe worth it. Pace yourself, go past the lookouts to Sunshine Coast, beyond the hikers eating their lunches on the highest summit, and take the path that descends, ever so slightly around to the right of the summit. And there you can perch on a perfectly positioned rock taking in the mountains… and trying to figure out if the Lions actually look like lions from up close.

You can get to the Hollyburn Peak trail hike from the cross country parking lot of the Cypress Mountain Ski Resort. The trail is operated by BC Parks and therefore is free — whereas you’d pay for the Cypress snowshoeing and cross country access. The only difference is that you’re hiking Hollyburn Mountain instead of the Cypress Bowl. It’s no technical, but it can be pretty steep at times. So snowshoes and poles are the way to go in winter months. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the top and about the same coming down. You should be fairly fit to attempt this hike, or allow a lot more time! When you get to the top on a clear day you can see the Cypress ski hills, the ocean, Vancouver and mountains. It’s a great reward.
