True Confections

The cakes is alright here. My friend really liked her chocolate piece though I thought it was just ok. My angel food cake was heavy on the layers of cream and I couldn’t tell the difference between cake vs cream texture. The service was bad here. They never sat us down until we asked the staff to. He thought we were getting takeout (no that’s not why we stood at the wait to be seated sign). The server never came to take or order we had to tell the host while he was seating other people. Drinks were never refilled nor were we checked on the entire time. My friend even had to walk her leftover cake to the front to get packed up and the bill. I’m not sure if they expect you to raise your hand or yell for service, perhaps they’d do better with those service call buttons at each table but they need some help! Pay attention to customers please. Stop loitering around the front looking at who knows what. Nice people they just need to work on their service skills.

I have never felt more insulted in my life. I walked into this restaurant with my two sons and my wife. We just had a lovely dinner at the Greek restaurant down the street and my son wanted a carrot cake so we went for a walk to True Confections. We were seated immediately and we waited for the waitress to approach our table. 10 minutes went by. Then I thought that maybe we needed to place the order at the cashier and they just bring the deserts to out table. She told me that is not the procedure and that she would send the waitress to my table immediately. During this time about 10 other people walked in and were served. Then I asked the lady at the cashier if we could get a waitress to out table because the kids were getting a little anxious (4yr old and a 1yr old). A young man eventually came to the table and says «Yeah!». I was taken back but I still ordered. I asked for a carrot cake, a hot chocolate and a glass of water. He said is that it? I replied yes and he attempted to walk away. My wife stopped him and asked him if he can just bring out our order before the other 10 people who came in after wards. He said he can’t do that! We ask why and he says that he is not our waiter and our waitress is in the washroom. My wife asked how long he thought it would take because we had already been there for 20 min. He said he didn’t know because he is not in the washroom with her. We decided to leave. Before we left we asked him why he was being so rude and that in the service industry that is not how you treat customers. He told us to leave and that he didn’t need our money! I told him he is serving slices of cake and should be a little more polite. He asked me if I had a problem and was almost threatening me. My wife asked his name and he refused to give his name. We asked to speak to a manager. He gave us a card to call which was the store down town. On our way out he said there is a $ 5 minimum charge per person and we should have read the sign before coming in. We ended up calling the Denman store and the lady who answered the phone didn’t seem too concerned. I guess this is what happens when people make too much money and our money is not needed.
This young man needs to learn a lesson in respect of others.

I have to say nothing really changed much here in terms of décor compared to 7 years ago. Last time I was here I was with a group of friends and yesterday when I came again with a group of friends. The setting or atmosphere is great for small group meetup. He place is not loud.
Desert wise it’s not bad. We ordered three items and shared it. THe toffee pudding was really good. I ordered the terimisu and that was yummy. I got to try my friend cheese cake, it was very fresh.
All desert were freshly made. Best part is that they are in my hood. Plenty of parking at night. Friendly service.
They close at midnight. Perfect for late night desert especially the places in the hood closes early.

Cakes are rich but so small and overpriced! Not the best tasting I’ve ever had either… 3.5÷5 stars.

I love love love the white Savanah. Its to die for. I wad craving for sweets and had to ask my husband to drive from West 12^th and Cambie to West Broadway and Alma. Not a short drive but well worth it. But dont you wish dessert places would offer something savoury in the menu? Maybe its just me but after eating something sweet I want something salty next. Maybe they should have garlic fries and chicken fingers lol!
This particular location plays some really nice music. I had to wait for Zedd’s Clarity to finish before taking off. The servers are super friendly too. I would recommend this place.

Had a party of 6. We got there around 9:30pm. The hostess made us wait outside even though there were a table for 4 and a table for 2 that was next to each other. So we waited about 15mins outside. That should have been a sign to go elsewhere! Then we were seated, menus were given, but no water was offered except are you ready to order? So we ordered. When the cakes and drinks arrived the waiter could not even remember who ordered what! That was the last we saw of him. We had to ask for glasses of water. The waiter never came around to offer refills or even ask how things were!
Here is the the kicker! When we asked for the bill, they automatic added on 15% for tips for service of non existence! There was no signs or even was mentioned by the hostess or server about the automatic 15%. So really here is your crap and we really don’t have to serve you and we will charge a tip! Truth of the matter, the desserts aren’t even closed to be good as it used to be! I know there is a lack of late night dessert coffee places, but I would stay away from this place cause its not what it used to be!

True Confections reminds me of a sad superhero story. You see this kid with tons of potential and solid foundations ending up wasting their talents on holding traffic signs instead of saving the world.
Sure, a cake spot might not have saved the world anyway, but this place could’ve been one of the hottest spots in Vancouver. Their cake recipes are irresistible. Case in point: hazelnut mousse cake. I have it every year for my celebration of birth because it represents everything I want out of my next year: DECADENCE. (Lol my aspirations are a little more virtuous than that but still.) Their caramel cheesecake? You can only inhale it.
But the service is a big whomp whomp whomp. Getting a few slices of cake cut is drawn out for a stupidly long amount of time, and the servers generally fail to engage the tables in any sort of conversation at all. Last time when I asked for the rest of the cake to go (because, decadence) it was just wrapped hastily in parchment paper, so it looked like a delicate turd, and thrown into a brown bag.
The environment also feels super dated and feels dreary rather than intimate. Some new trendy IKEA furniture (this place doesn’t strike me as the kind to drop any money on atmosphere anyway) and some colours other than black and mauve should do the trick.
The hours though are quite excellent. Love late spots.
Long story short: I’ll always buy the cake at True Confections but everything else about this place makes me feel like angry Batman.

Just ridiculous — there is a minimum charge, but I am here to comment about food which I was not thrilled about either.
Forgettable:
We ordered a slice of carrot cake and devil’s food cake. It was unfortunate because while the flavors were all there, the cakes were chilled so I could not even say it was moist. Perhaps people like their cakes cold but not me. At least room temperature please.
Considering there are few late night dessert places, perhaps I will give it a 3^rd try. They say, three times a charm right?

As someone that has lived in the UBC area for four years, I have often overheard friends discussing True Confections as a stop for them later that day. Indeed, True Confections seems like a great idea on paper — after grabbing dinner with friends or a date at one of the restaurants in the area, one could wind down the evening here with a dessert and/​or drinks.
As a result of being in the area for dinner today, I decided to finally go and see what the hype was about. Unfortunately, True Confections falls flat in execution, and is an average at best offering on West Broadway. It perhaps benefits greatly from a university audience that enjoys sweet for sweet’s sake.
I got a slice of chocolate raspberry cake and while it wasn’t bad, I can’t say it was memorable or even good. I certainly wasn’t enticed to try anything else, especially at the price point.
Beyond the food, the place is quite boring. The patio looks like it has potential, but the interior was painfully dull. The staff here are awesome, though. They were quite friendly and very accommodating.
All this said, I can’t see myself visiting True Confections again. At least, not on my own accord. I’m sure a friend will extend an invitation at some point in the upcoming school year.

This little dessert spot is known for their wide variety of decadent cakes. Good selection here, probably 30 different desserts: cheesecakes, mousses, pies, and many types of standard cakes.
Many of my friends rave about True Confections; however, I can only conclude that these people aren’t particularly discerning with their desserts. Personally, I find the cake to be pretty average and, like most dessert places, they make up for quality by jacking up the amount of sugar. With a homemade cake or one from a good bakery, you can use much less sugar and have the flavours of the other ingredients shine through. That said, while not spectacular, the cake is certainly satisfying and I appreciate the huge selection.
Slices aren’t very big and prices are a little on the high side, ranging from about $ 7 – 9, which means over $ 10 with tax and tip for a slice of cake! They’re open late and are usually pretty busy despite the out of the way location. Service has been quick and friendly whenever I’ve been.

True Confections… ahh my true love! LOL.
Well, this review maybe biased because going to UBC and living in the area, it defiantly became one of my favorite places for a late night sweet treat. I think they do cakes really well and I am A HUGE CAKE FAN!
The parking around the place is defiantly a hassle and sometimes I find it’s best to just park on the street and walk over to True Confections. The seating inside inst the greatest, given they are normal chairs and tables. The décor meets the bare minimum requirements of a coffee shop. Don’t get me wrong, the cakes and everything else is amazing but they could definitely use a décor update. Now onto the food!
My personal favorite here is the Diplomat, I love the pastry end of the spectrum of cakes and the crisp flakiness of the Diplomat balanced with creaminess, which is not overbearingly sweet. I love to couple the Diplomat with an unsweetened Earl Grey! and if it’s late, a decaf Earl Grey.
Pro tip: Banana Leaf followed by True Confections hits the SPOT!!!

From the outside it doesn’t look like dessert place. Not hitting on the mark with their color theme and or branding, however, inside it looks like the other location. I was a little disappointed in their lack of pastry selections for something that is considered a dessert place, especially the few cake selections that they have. I wasn’t expecting much considering their other location, however, came here ’cause one of my GF wanted to have a coffee date here and heard about my coffee challenge. I did get a latte, however, the experience does not qualify to make it on my list. It was okay. Cakes were nothing to write home about to be honest. I could find better quality at a bakery in the same area.

I very neat place for late night dessert. Over 30 different desserts to choose from. I thought the coffee was spot on too. Classic late night atmosphere, reasonable prices and attentive staff for the most part. The hostess could have smiled once or twice, but other than that… I’d go back. I had the milk chocolate hazelnut cake, very delicious.

Bad service, very rude waiter who did not let us sit because we ordered a whole cake, even tho we ordered drinks just so we could sit to have the cake. They would not add a chair to a table or push tables together to let us sit more people, instead we had to wait for a table and they didn’t let us stand in front to look at the cakes, they asked for us to stand in the corner. And once we got a table we couldn’t even sit, which they did not warn us about before buying the cake.

this place will always holds sentimental value for me, so I may be biased… (just a little) but this shop is the cutest pastry and coffee joint I’ve been to in Vancouver. It’s the best date idea on a rainy night, who could go wrong with a warm London fog with a slice of cheesecake! It’s perfect for a date, birthday party or even solo coffee session. The treats are delicious and the drinks are simple. Definitely try the pecan pie!

I love the True Confections venues. I’ve visited the one on W. Broadway and the other one on Denman many times. I like the Denman location better since it has a dark intimate romantic atmosphere to it. I also like the fact that I can also purchase a whole cake to bring home to celebrate a special occasion. My favorite cakes are: English Trifle (Vanilla cake, sherry, vanilla custard and fresh fruit, served with whipped cream), White Savannah (Angel food cake in Bavarian cream Orange Brandy Served with 3-​Berry Sauce), and the White Chocolate Raspberry cheesecake.

Dessert!!! Come and have a drink, eat your favorite cake or pie and enjoy the night. This location was busy and so expect to wait for a seat if you come. The staff are friendly but the seating can be tight. They will rearrange tables for larger groups.

It has been so many years since I had been here til this last visit. True confections is a great intimate dessert spot! The cheesecakes here are amazing. This time I tried the chocolate raspberry cake and it was drool worthy perfection.

Ok, so you already know the desserts here are going to be pricy. But you came for the allure of late-​night romantic-​ness, right? Unfortunately, there were top 40 hits playing instead of slow jazz.
And be warned; the cake isn’t moist. The slices are big, but if you’re paying 6 – 10 bucks for a slice it better be!
My mud cake was basically a chocolate bread with a bit of icing, some whipped cream on the side and a whopping additional charge for it to be ‘heated up’ (they do notify you of the charge in the menu). I tried my friends dark chocolate orange slice. It was not moist, and the orange was very very very subtle (basically non-​existant). The pleasant surprises? The mango ice tea, and the 2 scoops of ice cream. The mango ice tea was sweet and refreshing, and the ice cream was a fair portion and price (even though it was probably scooped from a tub of Breyers). A side note: my glass of water was never refilled when it was empty.

I have to admit, this place gets some credit from me because I can trace good memories back to the early 90s here, before I was really into food. I’ve probably been every 2 – 3 years for some reason or another and always liked it.
Historically (and perhaps luckily) I have been in a rut. Early on (the 90s!) I discovered the Hazelnut Belgian Mousse. I always want to try something else, but can’t tear myself away from this and end up ordering it. Get this item!
I have, however, had the chance to sample other people’s choices and I’d have to agree with another reviewer that said the cakes are their weakness, but cheesecakes, pies and trifles, are pretty good (though I don’t recall the prices being this high — not worth it if you consider a high end restaurant’s desserts sit around this price).

My fiancé and I noticed that they do wedding cakes,. and specifically one we were thinking would be what we want to serve our guests: The Diplomat.
Now perhaps I had high expectations because I knew if we went with this for the wedding, it would be $ 230… (though that is actually quite reasonable with a big wedding cake),. but true to form,. the «cake» was unimpressive. I found it tasty, but nothing like other diplomats I’ve had (such as Notte’s bakery). The icing had a bit of that oily taste that I associate with Safeway cakes (but still much better). The cake was nothing special, and the signature diplomat custard and pastry was only so so (and only one layer of the pastry) for a wedding cake,. a fail.
As I said, I still have a soft spot in my heart for this place. Maybe go every 2 or 3 winters on a dark night,. but get the Hazelnut Mousse, or at least steer away from the cakes.
