The service was bad; they messed up our order and overcharged. They were not knowledgeable at splitting the bill and although apologetic, did not do anything to fix the issue. Disappointed

Probably give this place no stars tbh. The service was crap. We ordered a combo and they put orders on everything in the combo separate so we were left with an overcharged bill. We asked to split the bill but they did not know how to. In the end we did pay the total amount because we were in a rush. I honestly hate this place. Never going back. Will never recommend.

It’s a hidden local gem place in Kerrisdale. The salads are amazing! Service is slow but the quality of food and authenticity is great.

Kerrisdale is a charming friendly suburban neighborhood with local shops and is no stranger to Japanese restaurants. I been to the reknown Ajisai before but never had a chance to try Tokyo Thyme until today.
I went for the Chirashi combo with your choice of a side mini chicken udon or gobo ten udon.
The reason for the somewhat low 3 stars was the small portion of the combo as is basically a mini udon AND a mini-​Chirashi don. My initial reaction was «Is that really everything??» I expected more when my order arrived, although the presentation and quality is fresh.
The chicken udon was prepared to my liking, like a homestyle goodness topped with the flavor of Yuzu. The breakdown of the Assorted Chirashi comes with the atypical salmon, tuna, ebi, hokkigai and… Well, that’s all for $ 14. My comparable is the Chirashi don at Shizenya, which packs a whole lot more variety for its value.
Service is pleasant and quick. I was expecting more so think I will give Tokyo Thyme another try, and give a higher review.

Great place, it wasn’t crowded when Ajisai was, so we ended up here. The rolls were a bit smaller than I expected, but delicious. The server seemed new, so he wasn’t that fast.

Novel dishes like their red and white tuna stack made this place stand out. The other stuff you can find at every restaurant was, well, like every other restaurant. Waiting time was a bit long (~35 min from our appetizers to mains, we were a large group so we’d already pre-​ordered).

We’ve been craving for Japanese food so our friend recommended Tokyo Thyme. They are not opened very late. Their closing time is either 8:00pm or 8:30pm.
Our friend kept telling us to try the house special sunomono and it was surprisingly very refreshing. You have a choice of ordering small order (3pcs) or large (6 pcs). It’s a sunomono salad wrapped in cucumber slices. The sesame crusted tuna steak was my favorite dish. It’s a lightly seared tuna seasoned with white and black sesame. There was sauce on the plate but it looked so pretty I didn’t want ruin it. :p
They have this very interesting picture of the red and white tuna stack. It was a tower of tuna with a quail egg on top. The quail egg is optional .50 more. We didn’t try it with the egg because my husband doesn’t like raw egg but I would have tried it if it was just me eating it. When the dish came, there was a dish of seaweed sheets and a small bowl of rice. We are suppose to mix the tuna in the bowl and make our own sushi roll! Put the rice and tuna mix on the seaweed and roll!
We ordered two rolls from the creative roll section it was the bloody winter and the Indian summer. The bloody winter was white tuna and masago on the top. (Not sure what masago is but maybe it that Long white crispy thing) and inside is spicy tuna, Yamaimo and shiso. By the time we got this dish we were getting about ¾ full. But it was good bite size and it wasn’t too spicy. The Indian summer is bbq unagi and avocado on top and bbq unagi and green bean tempura. This roll was very good. The unagi was not too thick and not too much avocado and it has a crunch to it.
We also ordered some nigiri sushi and chopped scallop roll. The chopped scallop roll didn’t have much taste to it. It didn’t stand out to me. Over all I loved everything and they refilled my tea so frequently! Awesome service!

You’ve got to like my friend KC! She’ll phone me up at 630 and ask me if I wanted to go out for dinner before badminton when I said yes she had like 2 or 3 restaurants that I could choose from! Kind of nice to know I get some sort of control over the process! Haha!
We ended up going to Tokyo Thyme! I’ve never heard of this place, but when I looked it up on Unilocal the reviews were pretty good. We got to the restaurant around 715 and this place closes at 8 pm! But the staff did not make us feel rushed. We ordered ate and talked until 830 (the restaurant was closed and we were the last people there, but the staff did not kick us out).
When I first walked in I was a little surprised at how small this restaurant is. It can’ t hold more than like 25 people. Overall, I really enjoyed the food! We ordered an Assorted Sashimi platter. It was really good. Very fresh and beautifully presented. We had their house special sunomono roll. It’s kind of like a sushi roll that uses a cucumber instead of rice. Certainly an innovated idea. We also had the sesame seed tuna steak. Lovely presentation and very tasty.
For a small restaurant Tokyo Thyme packs a flavourful punch!

Always good — another fave in Vancouver. The couple who run this really care about the food and you can tell by the freshness of food and attention to how the food is presented.

Lunch Oct 5. Reviewed well and recommended by a friend but wouldn’t be changing from my regular Irashai Sushi on 41 since the standard combinations are ordinary and more highly priced. Especially disappointed in October Devil despite exotic appearance — bland. My guest and i loved Sesame Crusted Tuna Steak — get that if nothing else. Noisy at lunch since filled with students.
Agree with prior slow service observation but teapot available for self-​serve.
No thyme in any dish. Thank God it is just a pun.

Who knew that there was such great sushi right around the corner from my condo?!? Literally have walked by there several times a day and never gone in. Now it’s my new fave sushi spot! Amazing staff and service with beautiful presentation and super fresh sushi! Sashimi was like butter — had toro and hamachi, the tuna stack is gorgeous and so yummy and different, negitoro roll super good — we r working our way thru the menu and so far it’s all great! And so reasonably priced too!

I loved walking into this cute this shop to hear the traditional Japanese greeting from the whole staff, it always makes you feel welcome!
I ordered takeout today. Using Unilocal’s menu I navigated through all the rolls to the lunch special section and opted for Lunch Special B. My wait was short so I took the time to snap a few pictures and read some of the daily features on a bright chalkboard behind the chef.
The order itself was good, 3 pieces of nigiri, 12 small pieces of maki. Please note, reader, that Tokyo Thyme will not serve miso soup to-​go so if you are looking for it, you’ll have to dine-​in. This lowered the value of meal for me — plus I always compare each sushi place to my benchmark favourite on West Broadway where the pieces are much larger.
For $ 12.08 I was left feeling a little cheated. Yes it all tasted great but my stomach will be growling for more in an hour or two. If you’re a big eater, I would recommend avoiding these lunch specials.

I mean — the food here tastes good, but then the serving is very slow (slow serving is probably unavoidable for small sushi places like this one), and the portion is very small…

It’s your sushi gem worth coming out for. The standards here are presented to diners, of taste and presentation, where neighboring tables convene to an unplanned discovery beyond satisfaction.
I can’t pin down precisely what the niche of this small restaurant is, but I think I come close to it if I described here as high quality in food and service mirrored with humbleness and passion. I sense it in the dishes, well presented, unhurried details, the simplicity of ingredients distinguishable as one and together. The agedashi tofu simmered over the shallow broth, served with spoons to lightly bathe each moist yet softly firm tofu. The peppered tuna, seared tuna, black pepper and avocado, was a great choice to pair with tuna tataki. The texture bladed with butter-​like softness, lightly fired on the surface. We set our mains upon makis and a creative roll. The double prawn Dynamite, Shiitake Tama Q, and Chicken Teriyaki roll demonstrated non-​greasy, clean taste of what it promised; even the rice and nori stood out in flavor. The Red Storm was an amazing coloring on its plate, a line of red and white tuna folded over its roll consisting of more peppered tuna, avocado, shiso, and kaiware. My favorite is the Sesame Crusted Tuna Steak salad, alluring white and black sesame coating over a bed of greens and spicy sauce.
The staff is wonderfully pleasant, including the Chef, a leading example of how restaurants should be cared.

Tokyo Thyme continues to impress me. Kinta-​san and his wife, Keiko, remain focused, authentic and always have fresh ingredients.
They don’t stray far from their sushi roots which I like.

Very fresh well prepared sushi. Not much cooked food so can be limited but is far better than my usual horrific Kerrisdale sushi.

Sushi here is of high quality. Some dishes are very creative and beautifully presented as well, like their sunomono — a roll of all things that make up sunomono but all are wrapped in a roll covered with thin cucumber sheets. I like their tuna tower — very tasty dish with complex combination of great flavor and texture. I also liked their family style chirashi don — not much sashimi but really enjoyed how they mixed their rice with different garnishes like cilantro, cucumber, sweet japanese pickles, etc. It is expensive and sometimes slow to come out but overall a great sushi place.

I found this sushi place is highly rated and pictures are pretty nice. I just gave it a try…
My gal friend and me wanted to try everything on menu and ordered quite a bit of foods, the waitress was wonder how we could finish it…
What did we order? See the below:
Hamachi & Sockeye Salmon Sashimi (½ order each) — It’s good to let us order ½ order and we could order both kinds of sashimi. It’s so fresh and tasty.
House Special Sunomono Roll (½ order — 3 pcs) — It wrapped by thin cucumber instead of seaweed. Taste so refreshing.
Red & white tuna stack — Nice presentation with quality tuna.
Sashimi Salad — Just a bit disappointed on this dish. The dressing was tasteless and only sesame oil added.
Chopped scallop cone — I loved it coz not much salad dressing and fabulous scallops in the cone.
Sushi — Good size of sushi rice and taste good.
Overall, the service was great! The waitress was friendly and foods were well presented.

Tokyo Thyme located in Kerrisdale is hidden gem. Their sushi is phenomenal. Their presentation is exquisite. Inside, the décor suggests nothing like a high end quality sushi restaurant: dated orange koolaid walls, swivel chairs and mis-​matched artwork.
House Special Sunomono 6.25 h /​11.50 f: Not your average bowl of watery thinly-​sliced marinated cucumbers and vinegar. This dish is like a beautiful piece of artwork. I could stare at this all day long. Thinly sliced marinated cucumbers wraps around amaebi shrimp. crab, smoked salmon, yamaimo and avocado. Sprinkle with some sesame. Dashed with some vinegar. Refreshing! Can be the only word to describe this dish. Half or Full orders available.
Red and White Tuna Stack 14.50 + .50 quail egg: Tower of red and white tuna as the name suggests. Diced and mixed with yamaimo and avocado. Served with sushi rice and seaweed. Concept is similar to Salmon with 7 Friends at Guu Otokomae where you would break apart the tower, stir, mix and served. The crunchy yam balances the soft tuna and adds a bit of texture. Just tangy enough with their house special sauce.
Daily Fresh Sashimi — Red Tuna, Toro: Perfectly sliced pieces of a bouncy, dense tuna vs a melt in your mouth, creamy toro tuna belly.
DX Negitoro 4.75: Albacore tuna, green onions, kaiware and mint. Daikon radish sprouts gives the roll an added fresh flavour and the shredded mint leaves is refreshing. Center packed with fresh tuna paste.
Fresh Saba Nigiri: Fresh, Savory, Fishy goodness.
Daily Sashimi Special — Uni Nigiri: Although I can’t say it is as fresh as the uni we had in Taiwan at Addiction Aquatic Development it is nonetheless very creamy. Color-​wise I think it still needs to be a little more golden (than deep orange) to be called fresh.

Nasudengaku 5.50: Baked eggplant glazed in special miso paste with a hint of orange zest. A nice touch of acidity to break apart the creamy richness.
Green Tea Icecream Mochi: served with black berry, goose berry and Azuki caramel. The red bean like azuki sauce is a nice pairing to the icy cold match ice-​cream. This is the only dessert available. Nothing too fancy and probably can be store bought.
Tokyo Thyme was a delightful experience and we will most likely will be back for some of their creative and seasonal rolls. The price point is economical while serving quality sushi.
