The Daily Catch

I’m not even a huge seafood fan, but if I am going to go the way of the water… these guys have the freshest, bestest in the city.

While we stayed in Vancouver for the last two days of our trip, we stayed at a house within walking distance to the Daily Catch. Since we were looking for some good seafood, I got sent out to scout this spot.
I came back with the following:
Kushimoto– these oysters were great! Flavorful, not too briny.
Fannie bay fat oysters– These were completely shelled, and were stored in liquid in a plastic container. They were a bit too much to eat in one sitting. Kind of made us sick after finishing it… and then we realized we weren’t supposed to eat them raw. Whoops.
smoked salmon-​This smoked salmon was very disappointing. Tasted more like sardines… really. :-(I feel bad because we bought some of this as presents for a friend and my boss. Hope I keep my job.
Service was helpful and friendly, although they did a mediocre shucking job, since the Kushimotos had bits of shell left in them.
I kinda’ wish I tried some of their candied smoked salmon.

Do you like delicious seafood? Me too! I used to live just around the corner from The Daily Catch and it was dangerous… I spent half my paycheque, and ate my body weight in fish. I have no regrets!
The staff are almost always incredibly helpful and speedy, they’re super efficient, and are always willing to fillet whole fish for you (which makes everyone’s lives easier!) I love the staff picks — if you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice, this is a great way to ensure you’re getting something yummy! The staff are also super responsive when I go in and say «I’m thinking of something like, maybe, a Thai curry? Or maybe an Indian curry? What kind of fish would go well with that?» …They’re very patient…
Don’t miss the fish snacks, too! The candied salmon is amazing and ohhhh my god never ever try the sablefish, unless you want to be addicted and poor. It is truly one of the most delicious things I have ever tried in my life!

Have been to the drive and west end locations and just bought some fish from the new UBC store last week. The store didn’t disappoint — it smelled clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and the fish was so fresh and delicious!
I got salmon and an assortment of things from the «deli» selection. HIGHLY recommend the sablefish candy — it is worth the price trust me.
Love how the bones had been taken out of my big fillet without me having to ask! I will be back for sure!

Fresh seafood and good service. We purchase a whole fish intending on filleting and portioning it out ourselves but they offered to fillet and portion it for us — all free of charge! They have marinates which we have yet to try. All the staff in there are friendly and knowledgeable. Love going in and seeing all the fresh seafood!

Fresh, sustainable, and (mostly) locally-​sourced seafood… what’s not to love?
The Daily Catch opened about a year ago on The Drive and I’ve been shopping here for my seafood needs ever since. If I ever need to be inspired for dinner ideas, I pop in here and Bob’s your uncle!
Qualicum Bay scallops? Fresh oysters, clams, and mussels? Local spot prawns? Ethically-​caught jumbo prawns? Fresh hand-​peeled shrimp? Live dungeness crab and lobster? Line-​caught ling cod or steelhead trout? How about a variety of types of salmon — fresh fillets or steaks, or their own house made smoked salmon, salmon jerky, salmon cakes, Indian candy, or smoked salmon cream cheese? Or halibut… or albacore tuna? It’s a feast for the eyes! And tummy.
As somebody who grew up in Steveston (fishing village extraordinaire), I know my local seafood and I know a good seafood shop… and this one takes the cake. And it makes sense — the owners, young 20-​somethings also from the fishing village-​y region of the Sunshine Coast felt that Vancouver lacked the same kind of quality, ethical seafood shops they were used to growing up… so they opened up one themselves, and the rest is history.
Staff is friendly and will even offer you a free marinade with your fish if you want to go that route. They also have a nicely curated selection of non-​perishables — sustainable canned tuna, smoked salt, truffle oil, etc. And in the freezer, they’ve got frozen fish stock, frozen spot prawns, frozen vacuum-​packed smoked salmon, fish, and a variety of items that might not be available fresh.
I also like that they offer side-​dishes and smaller items that you normally don’t find in just any seafood shop. Things like fresh seaweed salad, fresh pickled herring, fresh anchovies, smoked candied tuna, fresh BC octopus salad, etc. Sometimes it’s fun picking up a small quantity of these items and experiment with them at home.
And the best part is that all their items are sustainable — it’s the only 100% sustainable seafood shop in Vancouver. What’s not to love?

Sometimes you just don’t know what’s waiting for you on the Drive. I seriously thought this was just some seafood shop run by Joe Blow.
Parking is available on the side streets, as well as the metered spots out front.
Inside it was pretty stinky, as with any seafood place. But the products here are actually quite fresh. The place does live up to their name.
The raw oysters I ended up eating came in an aluminum tray, and they even took the care to pack the tray in ice. They were fresh and broke off in one solid piece (stale ones turn to mush). Definitely some of the best I’ve had in town.
I will definitely be back. Recommended.

The daily catch is ”the shop” on the drive. Everything is very fresh and appropriately stored. They are up to season with their display. Customer service is a-​ok.
I have paid a visit to spot prawn festival taking place by Granville Island to pick up some beauties. 2000 – 3000 people, a line up of almost a kilometer. Rode back to the drive and got it from The daily catch, slightly at a higher rate, very reasonable I would say. It is better than picking up frozen clunks from big supermarkets. And in some, you would find giant tanks with crustaceans in it. Poor animals are jammed in there, god knows how long they have been sitting, starved. That kind of quality you do not need, just live, not so fresh.
These guys have wonderful shellfish; two types of oysters, clams, mussels, crab, lobster all very well with the glisten that you would like on seafood with a fresh note from the ocean.

Imagine slabs of flaky fish, roasted tiger prawns, seared scallops and crab cakes all dancing around — like sugarplums — in *my* head. Pure heaven! That’s exactly how it feels while shopping at the Daily Catch. No, they don’t sell it cooked (though they do carry some candied tuna and salmon
), but you can allow your imagination to run wild with all the ways you could whip it up. (

To top it off, you can feel warm and fuzzy knowing that all the seafood at the Daily Catch is 100% ocean-​wise, a.k.a. sustainable. What does that mean? According to
, it means the seafood is «caught or farmed in a way that ensures the long-​term health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine ecosystem.»
Bottom line? Fresh and sustainable costs more, but they’re more than worth it. And it means more of these subaqueous creatures to enjoy — far into the future!

They definitely have everything you need here fish-​wise and I have no complaints. Sure, it’s spendy, but it’s fresh, ocean-​wise, «guilt-​free» seafood. What can one expect?
I had absolutely delicious halibut from here that I really didn’t need to dress up at all. I could use some help in the «interesting seasoning» department, but without butter and all of the «extras» this was some of the purest, flakiest fish that I’ve ever eaten. It melted in my mouth.
The trick is to bbq it on low heat and watch it so that you don’t overcook it.
Prices seem comparable to Whole Foods and GI, too.
Does this mean that summer is finally here? Yay!

Fresh, sustainable seafood. Helpful staff and great selection. Here’s a hint: if you buy a whole fish they will fillet it for you. Ends up being cheaper than getting 2 separate fillets and you get the scraps for stock.

Love the staff, love the seafood. This was long awaited on The Drive and they kicked it up a couple notches by ensuring fresh/​quality seafood. The price is slightly higher but in my opinion this is one of those cases of «you get what you pay for».

It is so amazing to finally have a place on the Drive to get quality fish.
Everything is 100% Oceanwise, and I love having the choice of a variety of different Salmon. They also post the location of where the fish has been caught, which is an extra great way to feel a connection to our local waters and the fishermen who harvest it for us.

I am amazed! This place has such fresh product (the best I have seen), excellent staff (the young women in there is AMAZING!), and have great services (they cleaned my live crab for free and put it on ice!)
The prices a tad high, but I do not care if the product stays as fresh as it is.
They are Ocean wise and this includes the live Lobster that is caught by a special net boat to help protect other species etc.
I will ALWAYS come here first! Love this new store!!!

Probably the best seafood market in Vancouver. Everything is sustainable and prices are reasonable. Johnstone Strait Sockeye, Haida Gwai Coho — where else in Vancouver can you get such high quality for this price. Well, granted 2010 was a banner year for the Salmon harvest, but in any case there’s no reason for Drive denizens to shop anywhere else for their fish.

Finally! A fish monger on the Drive.
Typical, they move in when I move out.
No matter, it’s a good addition to the neighbourhood.
I stopped in for their Grand Opening weekend and was lucky enough to try a few of their offerings — the crab dip and the salmon cakes. I’d def grab a couple salmon cakes to take home, they were packed with salmon, fresh tasting and not stuffed with filler.
A fish monger that subscribes to the OceanWise program and supports local fisherman and initiatives has got me… hook, line and sinker *awe I had to!*
