I’d been intrigued by this little studio nestled in a cool part of Kits for awhile but didn’t take the jump until a colleague gave me a rundown on his experience with The Backhealer. This guy I knew was pretty tightly wound and travelled with a lot of gear doing sound work for film. He enthusiastically explained that during a session with Steve he was able to relax and release muscles that had been balled up with tension for ages. As I found my own back becoming more and more tense, to the point sleeping was painful at times, I knew I had to go. I started with a private session. I’d been working almost 24⁄7 for 6 weeks so was pretty tense when I walked in. By the end of it, I felt like a new person. Both my body and mind had opened up. The work he did, using pressure while I focused on my breathe, set me on a better course, teaching me how to reduce tension within my body myself. Given my hectic travel schedule this is exactly what I needed — the tools to help myself. I booked one more private session and did a couple of night classes. Steve was very happy with my progress and said I’d be good to go on my own. So, for very little investment, I saw a huge improvement and feel much more hopeful now that I can take care of my problems myself.

I went into the shop, having done little research about it, and was hoping to get some guidance on how to get started, or if there were suggestions on the benefits of one session versus another. I found Steve quite standoffish and he had a private personal training session going on, and seemed annoyed that I was there asking questions, while his client looked for what to do next… but this was all during open business hours and there was no other staff. He offered little more than that I should sign up for a session on the website, he could not help me do that in person. So that’s what I did and signed up for the group session that evening, which was supposed to be led by Steve, and with Hung as assistance. I came in early to make sure I got any paperwork taken care of and Steve was quickly gone. Hung ran the session entirely, and it consisted only of breathing and placement of a ball on both sides of the abdomen and then the glutes… that’s, it in a full hour. More disturbing, I think, was to find that this business owner, while less than interested in talking to me in person, actually later used my information to seek me out on the Internet, or at the very least on Linked In. Even if his methods work for some, I found the vibe was all wrong.
