Came here for dinner. Food was okay, overpriced for what it was but the service is the reason for the 1 star. The hostess/waitress was pissed off because we came in at 915pm. If you don’t want people coming in, you should just say you were closed. She threw the menus at us, rushed out order, kept telling us that we can’t order anymore after we place our order and was extremely loud and rude. Wanted to order dessert with our initial order and asked for it to come after we ate our sushi and she refused saying you either get it now or don’t order it. Suffice to say not going to be back here and would recommend to others to avoid this place as well. For a few extra bucks walk down to Minami.

I was wandering around looking for a spot to eat during my lunch break when I saw this sushi restaurant. I ordered and Dynamite and Yam roll($ 5.50) thinking it would have everything in a dynamite roll with yam but it didn’t. It just had yam and shrimp tempura. Nothing special but kinda pricey for something that had so little. The awesome thing though was their Beef Teriyaki and Tempura Don. A huge bowl with lots of rice, caramelized onions and good beef teriyaki with tempura for $ 11? I was sold. Definitely coming back for more Don bowls but for sure not the sushi.

Absolutely love sushi maro! Really friendly staff and a super nice clean environment. Would definitely recommend trying some of the specialty rolls they have on their menu!

I can here on a whim. I was visiting YVR and was in the mood for sushi. I was pleasantly surprised with the service and pleasantness of the staff. The sushi was fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. The rolls I enjoyed were the California and Flamingo rolls. The Flamingo Roll was especially delicious. For those without vehicles, the restaurant is across from the Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain Station.

We ordered the Nabeyaki udon, deluxe sushi combo and deep fried soft shell crab. The sushi was fresh tasting, udon was hearty and comforting to our stomachs on a cold rainy February day and was decent sized portions. My cousin’s favourite was the deep fried soft shell crab. I thought it was still very tasty but she told me that they used to serve more pieces and the quantity is less this time around and served on a smaller plate as well. Overall, it is a pretty good sushi place that didn’t disappoint. However, I have to agree to with of the other reviews that in this area there are just too many high end sushi places that it is competing with. But you get what you pay for and this is pretty good bang for your buck.

Excellent quality sushi at a very reasonable price point. I’ve been coming here for quite some time now, and usually the service is pretty good except for the most recent time I went. Possibly during the dinner rush, with a line up, they wanted to get people in and out faster. I have been here enough times to give them the benefit of the doubt, and say it’s only a one off. I know there are tons of sushi places around this area and there’s also fancier and more high end places like Minami just around the corner… but if you are just looking for a satisfying, unassuming meal then Sushi Maro will do the job for you.

I work in the area, and order take out from here pretty regularly. They have good lunch specials, good value. It’s my go-to place for take out lunch.

I had not had good sushi for over a year. That’s because I’ve been in a land-locked place where I don’t trust their establishments and will just eat other food instead. When I finally arrived in Vancouver, I found out my old sushi go-to place in Vancouver had shut down. I frantically looked for a replacement. Couldn’t find one by sifting through reviews — reviews are just so mixed — you have the 1 star saying there is hair and rats, right next to the 5 star saying it was the best. It is not even reliable to see where the person reviewing the food is from to try to make a judgement. It is all just so random sometimes. So let my friend figure it out. She picked 3 sushi places to scope out, within a 1 – 2 block radius in Yaletown. The plan was to see the menu, get the vibe, pick a spot to eat. Peeked in Sushi Maro first — looked family oriented, simple, basic, fresh, clean. Then peeked in the one down the block — TOO westernized and Earls wannabe. It was raining so hard we skipped the peek at #3 and just ran into Sushi Maro to get out of the rain. SO glad we did! If you are looking for a big menu filled with the classics — BC roll, sashimi, tempura, that agedashi tofu, edemame — this place has it. AND it was all fresh and delicious. Everything tasted how I wanted it to taste. There were a few pages of chef special rolls too. But I was longing for the classics. We ordered so much. I could have eaten the whole menu twice I was so hungry and needing to fill this craving. Service was fine. It looked clean. Food fresh. Fish scent free. It was like a pig out in a sushi dream. Satisfying the cravings. I want to go back again. I need to. But when? I’m zillions of miles away from this place. I have to see you again and eat everything. When??? Sushi Maro, I love you.

I was caught in between giving Sushi Maro either 3 stars or 4 starts… I guess if overall food quality and taste is concerned this place should be a 4 star restaurant. Anyways I ended up giving this place 3 stars… On a cold and wet December night my friend and I had made arrangements to go out for dinner. She said she was getting off early(6 pm) and we could meet up and head to the Flying Pig. I told her Thursday’s my bowling night… we have time… but I’m a stickler for being on time. Anyways, as things worked out she got off work at around 645… so we were in a bit of a rush that evening. Our plan to go to the Flying Pig kind of fell by the wayside. Anyways, to make a longer story even longer… haha… we ended up going to Sushi Maro… I guess it’s ok… Setting is average… ambience is functional… Not fancy by any stretch of the imagination. The food hmmm… I wouldn’t say it was bad… I have to say Sushi Maro has some nice dishes. Dishes that I usually don’t find in other Japanese Restaurants. My main complaint about this place is the service. I would venture to guess that most of the waitresses who work here are Chinese. They employ a very terse and almost rude manner when serving customers. This type of service is acceptable and almost expected in a Chinese restaurant but it certainly is not expected in a Japanese restaurant. I know this is a bit uncouth but my friend and I both sat down for like 2 minutes and we were both on our phones returning time sensitive texts. Even though she could see we were both on our phone the waitress walks up to us and asks if we are ready to order… 1. we just barely sat down…2. we’re on our phones! Hello!!! Anyways, both my friend and I were not impressed. That was the kind of treatment we got all night. The waitress had a harsh and unpleasant tone. She was not there to help us. She was there to take our order and get us out… In this highly competitive Japanese restaurant environment to succeed your restaurant needs to the whole package. Sushi Maro is lacking in the customer service department. It is unlikely I will be coming back!

80% of the time it’s delicious and I love almost everything on the menu. There’s a reason why I eat there almost every day! But the other 20% of the time, the brown rice is mushy, they screw up my order or my lychee martini tastes watery and not sweet. Other than that I love the place… I suppose nowhere can be perfect, can it?

I have been frequenting this place for a couple of years now. The sushi is good, but that was based on the price prior to an increase about a month ago. I visited with my girlfriend and her daughter a couple of weeks ago and was excited to see a new menu. But alas, the only thing different on the menu was the price. Totally out of sync with other sushi restaurants in Vancouver and also in the area. And as mentioned the sushi is good, but at the price that they are now charging it needs to be substantially better. Sadly, I will have to frequent another location that has the prices figured out.

«Meh. I’ve experienced better.» — good encapsulation of my experience at Sushi Maro. Rolls are 3 stars — hits the spot when you’re having a craving, but relies on sauces rather than the flavours of the ingredients. Good value though since the prices are below average. Nigiri and sashimi — very meh, I wouldn’t bother with it again. Tamago tastes like ‘fake’(whatever that means)… was almost enough to make me tear up :( Service is okay(what’s that even mean, like 3 stars?) — efficient and friendly. Space is pretty cramped with little leg room for anybody 5’9″+ Yeah… sorry, not terribly enthused to make an effort on this review. Will stop by for when sudden saucy sushi cravings hit, but not otherwise.

The atmosphere + interior are nice. The food is not bad either, and so is the pricing considering the area and the surrounding restaurants. Came here for lunch and got one of the bentos. The sashimi was quite fresh, and although nothing stood out to me as super delicious it was a nice meal. With all the sushi restaurants around, I’m not sure if this place would be my #1 choice next time as well but it’s definitely an ok option.

Located in Yaletown and one of our favourite places for sushi in Vancouver. Every time we go, we know we are at least going to order their Don katsu. Soooo good and crispy. The sushi has always been fresh and never disappointed us. The price is a bit higher than other places, but that’s understandable due to the location. It’s not going to get the 5th star because of service. The service is pretty slow and sometimes it takes a while before a server decides to come back to your table. Definitely a place to try if you’re feeling sushi.

These guys moved half a block away to this new location, and the ambience is a huge improvement. Some nice modern touches have brought it from hole-in-the-wall to a place you wouldn’t mind going for dinner. The prices are average for Yaletown, although the dinner box is excellent value.

Delicious!!! I had the crispy salmon roll and the avocado mango salmon roll. Yummmmm!!! The sushi was very fresh and absolutely tasty. Everyone I was with enjoyed their mean. I can’t wait to go back. Only reason i’m giving this a 4 star is because the service was ridiculously slow and the restaurant was not even packed

Removed 2 stars due to my friend’s experience couple days ago at Sushi Maro. She ordered a sushi combo but she asked the waitress to switch one roll on the combo to another one. The waitress said it would cost $ 1.00 more. My friend agreed to pay for switching the roll. When the combo arrived, my friend noticed the combo came with the actual roll and not the roll that she asked for. My friend told to the waitress it came wrong and the waitress said she couldn’t switch anymore. My friend ended up eating the sushi she didn’t want to and, when the check arrived, the waitress charged the $ 1.00 for the switch that didn’t happen. My friend asked to remove the $ 1.00 from the check, but the waitress said she couldn’t remove it! She ended up paying the 1.00 more for the roll she didn’t have. This is really unacceptable.

Interior is model wood, nothing that screams too traditional. I stuck with my basic avocado and veggie roll which was good(hard to mess up). Customer service was very friendly and service was very fast. Be careful there is a $ 5 min for credit card purchases even though it is not listed anywhere.
